About the journal

Engineering Structures aims to provide a forum for a broad blend of scientific and technical papers to reflect the evolving needs of the structural engineer. Particularly welcome are contributions dealing with applications of structural engineering principles and theories in all areas of technology. The journal aspires to a broad and integrated coverage of the dynamic effects of wind, waves and earthquakes and of the modelling techniques whereby the structural response to these loadings may be computed.

The scope of Engineering Structures encompasses, but is not restricted to, the following areas: infrastructure systems; ocean engineering; earthquake engineering; wind engineering; blast loading; structure-fluid-soil interaction; structural reliability/stability; life assessment/integrity; hazard assessment; random vibrations; engineering plasticity; computer-aided design; optimization; expert systems; experimental modelling; dynamic properties of materials; modelling of concrete/cracking; economics.

The structures under consideration include: tall buildings; bridges; stadiums; commercial and public buildings; transmission towers; television masts; cooling towers; aerospace and marine vessels; plates and shells; foundations; suspension structures, smart structures; nuclear reactors; dams; pressure vessels; offshore rigs and drilling platforms; breakwaters and jetties; pipelines.

The journal also publishes review articles pertaining to structural engineering as well as short communications and discussions. Engineering Structures also publishes book reviews and a diary on international events related to any aspect of structural engineering. Short reports on conferences, current research and letters to the Editor are also invited. All papers are reviewed by at least two referees.

Instructions to Authors

Submission of Papers
Authors are requested to submit their original manuscript and figures with three copies to the relevant Editor as listed below.

For authors in the Americas and the Rest of the World manuscripts should be sent to Professor P.L. Gould, Department of Civil Engineering, Washington University, St Louis, MO 63130, USA.
For authors in Europe manuscripts should be sent to Professor H.A. Mang, Institut f¨¹r Festigkeitslehre, Technische Universitat Wien, Karlsplatz 13/202, 1040 Wien, Austria.
For authors in Asian or Pacific countries manuscripts should be sent to Professor S. Kitipornchai, Department of Building and Construction, City University of Hong Kong, Tat Chee Avenue, Hong Kong
Book reviews should be sent to Professor D.A. Nethercot, Imperial College of Science Technology and Medicine, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Imperial College Road, London SW7 2BU, UK.
All contributions are read by two or more referees to ensure both accuracy and relevance, and revisions to the script may thus be required. On acceptance, contributions are subject to editorial amendment to suit house style. When a manuscript is returned for revision prior to final acceptance, the revised version must be submitted as soon as possible after the author's receipt of the referees' reports. Revised manuscripts returned after four months will be considered as new submissions subject to full re-review.

You should write in clear and concise English. Spelling should follow the Oxford English Dictionary. Authors whose native tongue is not English are assured that in-house editorial attention to their contributions will improve clarity and acceptability to readers.

Submission of a paper implies that it has not been published previously, that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, and that if accepted it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in English or in any other language, without the written consent of the publisher.

Types of Contributions
Original high-quality papers (preferably no more than 20 double line spaced manuscript pages including tables and illustrations); review articles; short communications for rapid publication (no more than 10 double line spaced manuscript pages including tables and figures); reports of conferences and meetings; book reviews; letters to the editor; forthcoming meetings; selected bibliography.

Manuscript Preparation
General: Manuscripts must be typewritten, double-spaced with wide margins on one side of white paper. Good quality printouts with a font size of 12 or 10 pt are required. The corresponding author should be identified (include a Fax number and E-mail address). Full postal addresses must be given for all co-authors. Authors should consult a recent issue of the journal for style if possible. An electronic copy of the paper should accompany the final version. The Editors reserve the right to adjust style to certain standards of uniformity. Authors should retain a copy of their manuscript since we cannot accept responsibility for damage or loss of papers. Original manuscripts are discarded one month after publication unless the Publisher is asked to return original material after use.

Abstracts: Each paper should possess a self-contained abstract of approximately 100 words outlining in a single paragraph the aims, scope and conclusions of the paper.

Text: Follow this order when typing manuscripts: Title, Authors, Affiliations, Abstract, Keywords, Main text, Acknowledgements, Appendix, References, Vitae, Figure Captions and then Tables. Do not import the Figures or Tables into your text. The corresponding author should be identified with an asterisk and footnote. All other footnotes (except for table footnotes) should be identified with superscript Arabic numbers. Subdivide your paper in the simplest way possible, consistent with clarity. The text should usually follow the standard sequence of introduction, method, results and discussion. Headings and subheadings for different sections of the paper should be clearly indicated. Do not number the sections. Ensure that all figures and tables are mentioned in the text, and that all references are cited in number order. Note that trade names should have an initial capital letter.

Units: All measurements and data should be given in SI units, or if SI units do not exist in an internationally accepted unit. If you use any symbol or unit that may not be generally recognized, please include an explanatory footnote the first time it is used, to help the referees, editors and readers. It is also helpful to identify Greek symbols by name in the margin the first time they appear. Abbreviations and acronyms should only be used for unwieldy terms and names which occur frequently in the manuscript. Abbreviations should be used consistently throughout the text and must be clearly defined in full on first use.

Maths: Detailed mathematical discussion should be placed in an appendix. Equations and formulae should be typewritten wherever possible. Equations should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals in parentheses on the right-hand side of the page. Special symbols should be identified in the margin, and the meaning of all symbols should be explained in the text where they first occur. If you use several symbols, a list of definitions (not necessarily for publication) will help the editor. Type or mark mathematical equations exactly as they should appear in print. Journal style for letter symbols is as follows: variables, italic type (indicated by underlining); constants, roman type; matrices and vectors, bold type (indicated by wavy underlining).

References: All publications cited in the text should be presented in a list of references following the text of the manuscript. In the text refer to references by a number in square brackets on the line (e.g. Since Peterson[1]), and the full reference should be given in a numerical list at the end of the paper.
References should be given in the following form:

Illustrations: All illustrations should be provided in camera-ready form, suitable for reproduction (which may include reduction) without retouching. Photographs, charts and diagrams are all to be referred to as "Figure(s)" and should be numbered consecutively in the order to which they are referred. They should accompany the manuscript, but should not be included within the text. All illustrations should be clearly marked on the back with the figure number and the author's name. All figures are to have a caption. Captions should be supplied on a separate sheet.
Line drawings: Good quality printouts on white paper produced in black ink are required. All lettering, graph lines and points on graphs should be sufficiently large and bold to permit reproduction when the diagram has been reduced to a size suitable for inclusion in the journal. Dye-line prints or photocopies are not suitable for reproduction. Do not use any type of shading on computer-generated illustrations.
Photographs: Original photographs must be supplied as they are to be reproduced (e.g. black and white or colour). If necessary, a scale should be marked on the photograph. Please note that photocopies of photographs are not acceptable.
Colour: Colour reproduction is available if the author is willing to bear the additional incremental reproduction and printing costs. Please contact the editorial office for details. A letter confirming the author's willingness to accept these costs should be sent with the revised manuscript.
Authors should note that illustrations will not be returned unless specifically requested.

Tables: Tables should be numbered consecutively and given a suitable caption and each table typed on a separate sheet. Footnotes to tables should be typed below the table and should be referred to by superscript lowercase letters. No vertical rules should be used. Tables should not duplicate results presented elsewhere in the manuscript, (e.g. in graphs).

Submission on Disk after Acceptance for Publication
Elsevier Science now publishes all manuscripts using electronic production methods and strongly encourages submission on disk. Please send the disk files of your article along with the hardcopy of the accepted version. To ensure fast and easy processing of your submission, please adhere to the following guidelines:
1. Save text and graphics on separate disks.
2. Label all disks with your name, a short version of the article title, the journal to be published in, and the filenames. Please also include details of the software and platform (PC, Mac, UNIX, etc) used to create your files.
3. Ensure that the files on the disk match exactly the hardcopy. In cases of a discrepancy, the hardcopy version will be uses as the definitive version.

Proofs
Proofs will be sent to the author (first named author if no corresponding author is identified of multi-authored papers) and should be returned within 48 hours of receipt. Corrections should be restricted to typesetting errors; any others may be charged to the author. Any queries should be answered in full. Please note that authors are urged to check their proofs carefully before return, since the inclusion of late corrections cannot be guaranteed. Proofs are to be returned to the Log-in Department, Elsevier Science, Stover Court, Bampfylde Street, Exeter, Devon, EX1 2AH, UK.
