About the journal

Electrochimica Acta publishes original papers and critical reviews in the field of pure and applied electrochemistry by both members and nonmembers of the society. The areas covered include: fundamental interfacial electrochemistry, electrode and electrolyte materials, analytical electrochemistry, molecular electrochemistry, electrochemical energy conversion, corrosion, electrodeposition and surface treatment, industrial electrochemistry and electrochemical engineering, organic and bioelectrochemistry, electrochemical kinetics and electro-analysis, electrochemical physics and electrochemical dynamics. Short communications of extreme topical interest are published when possible in camera-ready form, to ensure the rapid dissemination of knowledge.
International Society of Electrochemistry (ISE) founded in 1949 by leading European and American Electrochemists to serve the growing needs of electrochemistry as a scientific discipline. Electrochimica Acta is the official journal of the ISE. Visit their homepage at
http://www.ise-online.org.

Instructions to Authors

General
The journal publishes critical reviews and full length research papers in the field of pure and applied electrochemistry. Contributions from members and non-members of the International Society of Electrochemistry are equally welcome.
Contributions will only be considered for publication if they are likely to be of interest to our readers and subscribers. Detailed descriptions of apparatus etc. should only be given if such apparatus is new. Contributions will be accepted for publication only on the recommendation of referees.
Research Papers should be complete and authoritative accounts of work which has special significance and general interest, presented clearly and concisely.
Critical Reviews are commissioned by the Editor-in-Chief. Authors intending to offer critical reviews are advised first to contact the Editor-in-Chief.
ISE recommends that Preliminary Notes (which are no longer published by Electrochimica Acta) should be sent to Electrochemistry Communications (Editor-in-Chief RG Compton, Oxford University, Physical and Theoretical Chemistry Laboratory, South Parks Road, Oxford OX1 3QZ, England).

Format of Manuscript
All contributions should be typed, double-spaced, with wide margins and on one side of the page only. They must be written in English. All pages must be numbered in sequence. Authors for whom English is a foreign language are recommended to have the manuscript thoroughly checked and corrected before submission. The Editors will warmly appreciate the co-operation of authors in preparing papers in a manner that will facilitate the complex work of publication. For research papers an abstract not exceeding 200 words should be provided. Authors must provide five key words at the end of each abstract for future indexing. Keywords should not be general in nature such as: electrode.
The corresponding author should be identified on the manuscript by " " and a footnote. Authors who are ISE members should be identified on the paper. On the title page please use a superscript 1 after the name of each ISE member and a footnote " 1 ISE member ".

Tables
Tables should be kept to a minimum; no data should be recorded in both graphical and tabular form. All tables should be provided with headings and should be intelligible without reference to the text.

Nomenclature and Units
Each paper should be consistent within itself as to abbreviations, symbols and units. Authors should use SI units wherever possible and when these are not used should provide a conversion factor to SI units. Axes for graphs and headings for tables should be given in quantity calculus form, eg times as t/s, potential as E/mV, current density as i/A cm-2. Any electrochemical abbreviations should be written in lower case without stops, for example emf, ac.

References
References should be indicated in the text in square brackets and listed at the end of the paper as follows:
1. R.A. Vargas, A. Garci? M.A. Vargas, Electrochim. Acta 43 (1988) 1271.
2. J. Newman, Electrochemical Systems, 2nd ed., Prentice-Hall, Englewood Cliffs, NJ,1991.

4. B. Miller, Proc. 6th Australian Electrochem. Conf., Geelong, Vic., 19-24 Feb., 1984; J. Electroanal. Chem., 168 (1984) 91.
Abbreviations of journal titles should follow those in World List of Scientific Periodicals (Fourth Edition).

Specific Instructions for online submission of papers
Authors are strongly encouraged to submit their paper online to accelerate the publication process. To submit an article online, authors are requested to upload their article as a LaTeX, Microsoft?(MS) Word? WordPerfect? or PostScript document via the "Author Gateway" page of this journal (http://authors.elsevier.com/journal/electacta), where you will also find a detailed description on its use. After uploading your file the system generates an Adobe Acrobat PDF version of the article which is used for the reviewing process. Authors, Reviewers and Editors send and receive all correspondence by e-mail and no paper correspondence is necessary. It is crucial that all graphical and tabular elements be placed within the text, so that the file is suitable for reviewing. It is permissible either to embed them in the correct position in the text OR at the end of the text. For figures TIFF or EPS files are preferred. Suggested packages for line graphics are Adobe Illustrator (version 3.0 or above), Freehand and Corel Draw. Graphics made in Wordperfect or Word generally have too low a resolution. A minimum resolution of 1000 dpi is required for scanned line graphics, 300 dpi for scanned halftones. Colour should be scanned in at 300 dpi, (500 dpi for colour line:tones). With CMYK electronic files include a 4-colour machine or cromalin proof and check that all the separations (if provided) are colour coded.

Note: Articles submitted online are converted into PDF for the review process but may need to be edited after acceptance to follow journal standards. For this an "editable" file format should be uploaded via the journal's Author Gateway page. Please note that the online submission cannot be accepted if only a pdf file of the manuscript is available.

Specific Instructions for hardcopy submission of papers
Authors who prefer to submit their article by post should send one paper copy and an exactly matching electronic version on disc to one of the editors. Papers will not be processed until the electronic version on disc is received by the editor. Acknowledgment of receipt of the manuscript and all other correspondence relating to its possible publication will be addressed only to the Corresponding Author, who must be clearly distinguished from co-authors at the time of submission; the fax number and e-mail address of the Corresponding Author should be supplied. Any subsequent changes, up to the time of publication, should be communicated to the Editor-in-Chief and the Publisher's Office.
Contributions from all parts of the world may be submitted directly to the Editor-in-Chief: Professor S. Trasatti, Dept. Phys. Chem. & Electrochem, Univ. of Milan, Via Venezian, 21, 20133 Milan, Italy. (Fax: +39 02 503 14224. E-mail: electrochim.acta@unimi.it.)
Contributions may alternatively be sent to any of the editors listed inside the front cover.
The original manuscript and diagrams will be discarded one month after publication unless the Publisher is requested to return the original material to the author.

Figures, including Photographs, for hardcopy submission
Each figure or photograph should be clearly marked on the back with the names of the authors and the figure number. Captions should be typed on a separate sheet. Line-drawings should always be carefully prepared at about twice the final size, on plain white drawing paper, and suitable for direct reproduction, original artwork for all figures should be supplied. Laser printer output at 300 dots per inch for a two-to-one reduction on good quality paper is acceptable. Authors should take particular care to ensure that lettering on a figure will remain clearly legible after reduction.
Photographs should be enlarged sufficiently to permit clear reproduction. If words or numbers appear in photographs, two copies are required, one with words or numbers clearly overprinted and the other without inscription.
Colour figures Submit colour illustrations as original photographs, high-quality computer prints or transparencies, close to the size expected in publication, or as 35 mm slides. Polaroid colour prints are not suitable. If, together with your accepted article, you submit usable colour figures then Elsevier will ensure, at no additional charge, that these figures will appear in colour on the web (e.g., ScienceDirect and other sites) regardless of whether or not these illustrations are reproduced in colour in the printed version. For colour reproduction in print is possible if, in the specific judgment of an Editor, the colour is essential to convey scientific information. As a general policy, authors are asked to contribute to the costs of colour printing. You will receive information regarding the costs from Elsevier after receipt of your accepted article. For further information on the preparation of electronic artwork, please see http://authors.elsevier.com/artwork.

Please note: Because of technical complications which can arise by converting colour figures to 'grey scale' (for the printed version should you not opt for colour in print) please submit in addition usable black and white prints corresponding to all the colour illustrations.

Preparation of papers on disk - hard copy submission
Always supply good quality originals of your artwork with the hardcopy of the manuscript, as we cannot guarantee the usability of electronic graphic files. Electronic files of accepted manuscripts can be submitted on a floppy disk or CD.
To help us:
1. Name your files using the correct software extension, e.g. Fig1.cdr, tb1-6.xls, text.doc, fig1a.eps, fig1.tif, etc.
2. Save text and graphics as separate files.
3. Please label all disks with your name, journal to be published in, and software used, including which release, eg: Wordperfect 5.0. Please also specify what computer was used (either PC or Apple Macintosh).
4. It is essential that the disk and hard copy versions are identical. The hardcopy will be used as the definite version of the article.
5. The text file should be single spaced. Place two returns after elements such as the title, headings, paragraphs, figure and table call-outs. Otherwise, within a text block, avoid using returns at the end of each line. All textual elements should begin flush left (no paragraph indents).
6. Follow the general Instructions for Authors on all points not covered here.
7. Keep a back-up disk for reference and safety.
Main text We can accept most word-processing formats, (ideally Microsoft Word or WordPerfect). Most formatting codes will be removed or replaced on processing your article so there is no need for you to use excessive layout styling. In addition, do not use options such as automatic word breaking, justified layout, double columns or automatic paragraph numbering (especially for numbered references). However do use bold face, italic, subscripts, super-scripts etc. Italics should be used for symbols representing quantities e.g. mass m, current I, electrode potential E. When preparing tables, if you are using a table grid, please use only one grid for each separate table and not a grid for each row. If no grid is being used, use tabs to align columns not spaces.
Please follow this order when you create your manuscript: Title, Authors, Affiliations, Abstract, Keywords, Main text, Acknowledgment, Appendix, References, Figure legends and then Tables. Do not import the Figures into the text file.
Graphics Computer-generated illustrations and halftones or line:tones (either colour or black and white) are acceptable. Since the usability of graphic files cannot be guaranteed, original hardcopies of all illustrations must accompany the accepted printout of the manuscript in all cases. The following points should be taken into consideration when preparing electronic graphic files: TIFF or EPS files are preferred.

Refereeing of Manuscripts
The Editors reserve the right to decline to publish manuscripts which they consider inappropriate for Electrochimica Acta.
When submitting their paper authors should supply the names and addresses (including e-mail addresses) of 3 suitable referees. The editors usually ask 2 referees to review each paper.
Guided by referees' reports, the editors will place each manuscript in one of four categories:
a) to be accepted for publication,
b) to be reconsidered, after the authors have had an opportunity to make recommended revisions and reply in detail to referees' comments,
c) to be rejected, with an invitation to the authors to submit an extensively revised manuscript. The revision will be treated as a new manuscript, with the difference that it must be accompanied by a set of detailed replies to all issues raised by the referees of the original manuscript,
d) to be rejected.

Proofs, Copyright and Reprints
All questions arising after acceptance of a paper, especially those concerning proofs, should be directed to:
Elsevier Science Ireland Ltd
Elsevier House
Brookvale Plaza
East Park
Shannon Co. Clare
Ireland
Tel: +353 61 709600
Fax: +353 61 709114

Proofs. Corrections to proofs must be restricted to errors introduced by the printers. Authors should return their proofs promptly, by fax or e-mail if the corrections are minor, to expedite publication.
Copyright Authors are requested to read the note on copyright published inside the covers of each issue. A form to authorise transfer of copyright will be sent out on acceptance of a paper or with the proofs. This form must be signed in the appropriate section and returned to the Publisher before the paper can be published.
Reprints. Authors are provided with 25 reprints free of charge. Further supplies may be ordered on the Reprint Order Form which accompanies the confirmation of receipt letter from the Publisher. Reprints are despatched one week after the subscribers copies of the issue.

Electrochemical Calendar
Material for the Calendar should be sent to the Editor-in-Chief, Conference organizers are asked to submit details at least six months before the date of the event

.Welcome to the Elsevier online submission service. This service has been designed to be as easy as possible to use. Authors can upload their article as a LaTeX, Microsoft?(MS) Word?/B> or WordPerfect?/B>. It is also possible to submit an article in PostScript or Adobe?Acrobat?PDF format, but if the article is accepted it will be necessary to send in the original source files.

The system generates an Adobe Acrobat PDF version of the article which is used for the reviewing process. Authors, Reviewers and Editors send and receive all correspondence by e-mail and no paper correspondence is necessary. Note: articles are converted into PDF for the review process but may be edited after acceptance to follow journal standards.

What to submit?
Journal specific guidelines on types of article accepted and how to prepare your article can be found in the Author Gateway journal page, in the Guide for Authors.

File Formats
Word Processor Formats
Please submit your article as a file in one of the following formats:

  • MS Word 6
  • MS Word 97
  • MS Word 98 for Macintosh?
  • MS Word 2000
  • WordPerfect 6.1 or higher
  • RTF

Important notes on word processor file preparation

  • For review purposes you must submit your article as a SINGLE FILE. You need to embed all your figures and tables within this file.
  • Fonts: Please choose Times, Times New Roman, Courier, Arial or Helvetica fonts as much as possible. Other fonts (e.g. Chinese, Japanese and Korean (CJK) character fonts) may cause the PDF conversion to fail. If your manuscript does not correctly convert to PDF, replace the font(s) where necessary and try again.
  • Most formatting codes will be removed or replaced on processing your article so there is no need for you to apply excessive layout styling. In addition, avoid options such as automatic word breaking, justified layout, double columns, automatic paragraph numbering (especially for numbered references). However, do use bold face, italic, subscripts, superscripts, etc.
  • For the production of your article you will also have to submit your graphic files separately as high resolution graphics. (See also the section on Electronic Artwork below.)

LaTex
For general instructions on how to prepare an article using LaTeX, see the Latex file guidelines. In addition, please note the following:

  • Include all your graphics in the LaTeX file, e.g. with the \includegraphics from the graphics package.
  • Submit any special class (or style) files and other macro files with your article. We are using an up-to-date TeX installation (TeXLive5d), so you need not include any of the standard packages.

PDF
If possible, please submit the original LaTeX or word processor files: this website will take care of converting them into a PDF file.

If you wish to create your own PDF, download the ES_review.joboptions to the "Settings" folder of your Acrobat Distiller and choose the "ES_review" joboptions before converting your file.

Note: This joboptions file is for Adobe Distiller v4.05 and later. If you are still working with an older version, or if you need more help, see. PDF settings .

File naming
To avoid confusion, please make sure your file has a short, descriptive name. Short means less than 30 characters and descriptive means names like figure1.tif and smith-article-version1.doc.

Electronic Artwork
For the production of your paper in the journal we need high-resolution graphic files in either TIFF or EPS. For information on how to prepare your artwork for electronic submission, see http://authors.elsevier.com/artwork.
