About the journal
Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety publishes studies that examine the biologic and toxic effects of natural or synthetic chemical pollutants on animal, plant, or microbial ecosystems and their routes into the affected organisms. Reports that discuss the entry and fate of chemicals through the biosphere are emphasized.
Research Areas include health problems and biological effects in humans arising from:
- Discharges into surface waters
- Meteorological factors
- Industrial effluents
- Industrial products
- Radiation
- Fuels
Database coverage includes Biological Abstracts, Current Contents/Life Sciences, Excerpta Medica (EMBASE), FISHLIT/ Fisheries Review, Index Medicus (MEDLINE), Index to Scientific Reviews, Research Alert, and Science Citation Index. Published under the Auspices of the International Academy of Environmental Safety. Official Journal of the International Society of Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety

Instructions to Authors
Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety publishes manuscripts dealing with studies of the biologic and toxic effects caused by natural or synthetic chemical pollutants to ecosystems, whether animal, plant, or microbial. The Editors are particularly interested in reports about the entry and fate of chemicals in the biosphere and reports of qualitative and quantitative studies of the toxic effects of chemical pollutants and their impact on humans. Articles describing studies using the techniques of analytical chemistry, histochemistry, pharmacology, pathology, and immunology applied to chemicals arising from industrial effluents, fuels, industrial products, discharges into surface waters, effects of meteorological factors, radiation, and catalytic actions on chemicals and metabolic transformations will be welcomed. Short review articles of general interest to toxicologists are also welcome. Negative or confirmatory data will be published when of sufficient interest.
Submission of Manuscripts
Manuscripts must be written in clear and grammatical English and four copies should be submitted to:
Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety Editorial Office 525 B Street, Suite 1900 San Diego, CA 92101-4495, USA Tel: (619) 699-6776 Fax: (619) 699-6700 E-mail: ees2@elsevier.com
There are no submission fees or page charges. Each manuscript should be accompanied by a letter outlining the basic findings of the paper and their significance.
Electronic Submission Authors are requested to transmit the text and art of the manuscript in electronic form, via either computer disk, e-mail, or FTP (ftp.elsevier.com, with username anon and password essd4acc), each time a new version is submitted. Submission as an e-mail attachment to ees2@elsevier.com is acceptable provided that all files are included in a single archive the size of which does not exceed 2 megabytes. Hard-copy printouts of the manuscript and art that exactly match the electronic file must be supplied. The manuscript will be edited according to the style of the journal, and authors must read the proofs carefully.
Manuscripts are accepted for review with the understanding that no substantial portion of the study has been published or is under consideration for publication elsewhere and that its submission for publication has been approved by all of the authors and by the institution where the work was carried out. Further, any person cited as a source of personal communications must approve of such citation. Written authorization may be required at the Editor's discretion. Articles and any other material published in Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety represent the opinions of the authors and should not be construed to reflect the opinions of the Editors or the Publisher. Manuscripts that do not meet the general criteria or standards for publication in Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety will be immediately returned to the authors, without detailed review.
Authors submitting a manuscript do so on the understanding that if the manuscript is accepted for publication, copyright in the article, including the right to reproduce the article in all forms and media, shall be assigned exclusively to the Publisher. The Copyright Transfer Agreement should be signed by the appropriate person.
Authors are responsible for obtaining permissions to reprint previously published figures, tables, and other material.
Preparation of Manuscript
Use generic names of chemicals whenever possible. Proprietary names and trademarks should appear only to identify the source of the chemical and subsequently only the generic name should be used. All abbreviations should be unpunctuated. All abbreviations, chemical names, and journal names should follow the style of latest edition of Chemical Abstract Service Source Index. A useful writing guide is the CBE Style Manual published by the Council of Biology Editors.
Manuscripts should be double-spaced throughout on one side of 8.5 x 11-inch or A4 white paper. Pages should be numbered consecutively and organized as follows:
The Title Page (p. 1) should contain the article title (limited to 15 words or 80 characters), authors' names and complete affiliations, footnotes to the title, and the address for manuscript correspondence (including e-mail address and telephone and fax numbers).
The Abstract (p. 2) must be a single paragraph that summarizes the main findings of the paper in less than 150 words. After the abstract a list of up to 10 keywords that will be useful for indexing or searching should be included.
The Introduction should be as concise as possible, without subheadings.
Materials and methods should be sufficiently detailed to enable the experiments to be reproduced.
Results and Discussion sections must be separate sections and not combined into one.
A concise Conclusion should appear at the end of the text.
Acknowledgments should be brief and should precede the references.
References. Citations in the text consist of the author's name and the year of publication in parentheses. References should be listed alphabetically by name. Only articles that have been published or are in press should be included in the references. Unpublished results or personal communications should be cited as such in the text. Please note the following examples:
References in foreign languages should appear in the language of the original paper.
Figures
Figures should be in a finished form suitable for publication. Number figures consecutively with Arabic numerals, and indicate the top and the authors on the back of each figure. Lettering on drawings should be professional quality or generated by high-resolution computer graphics and must be large enough to withstand appropriate reduction for publication. Please visit our Web site at http://authors.elsevier.com/artwork for detailed instructions on preparing electronic artwork.Color figures can be accepted only if the authors defray the full cost.
Tables
Tables should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals in order of appearance in the text. Type each table double-spaced on a separate page with a short descriptive title typed directly above and with essential footnotes below. Authors should submit complex tables as camera-ready copy.
Footnotes
In text footnotes should be indicated by superscript numbers, and in tables by superscript italic letters. Text footnotes should be typed on a separate sheet accompanying the manuscript. Table footnotes may be placed directly beneath the tables.
Proofs
Proofs will be sent to the corresponding author. To avoid delay in publication, only necessary changes should be made, and proofs should be returned promptly. Authors will be charged for alterations that exceed 10% of the total cost of composition.
