About the journal
Earth Surface Processes and Landforms provides a journal for the publication of research papers on all aspects of geomorphology interpreted in its widest sense.
The subject matter includes the following topics in pure and applied geomorphology:
PROCESSES
- Hillslope, fluvial, coastal, aeolian, glacial and periglacial processes of erosion and deposition.
- Process mechanics and modelling.
- Surface water and sediment movement.
- Hydrology and watershed management.
- Natural hazards and extreme events.
- Landslides.
LANDFORMS
- Landform evolution and analysis.
- Terrain analysis and morphometry.
- Landform genesis and chronology.
- Landform modelling.
SOILS AND WEATHERING
- The physical and chemical breakdown of the Earth's surface - regoliths and soils.
- Surface geochemistry.
- Solute and nutrient cycling.
- Soil dynamics and erosion.
- Soil properties and mechanics.
- Soil development and toposequences.
ENVIRONMENTS
- Landforms and processes of polar, temperate, arid and tropical regions.
APPLIED GEOMORPHOLOGY
- The application of relevant methods to the solution of planning, environmental management or engineering problems.
The journal is published on behalf of the British Geomorphological Research Group through editors appointed by the Group.
Instructions to Authors
Initial Manuscript Submission. Authors should submit three copies of the manuscript (including copies of tables and illustrations) to Professor Michael J. Kirkby, Department of Geography, University of Leeds, Leeds LS2 9JT, UK, or to Dr. S. E. Darby, Department of Geography, University of Southampton, Highfield, Southampton SO17 1BJ, UK, or to any member of the Editorial Board.
Submission of a manuscript will be held to imply that it contains original unpublished work and is not being submitted for publication elsewhere at the same time. Submissions should be in one of the following forms:
- Research Articles: Original and significant research results and syntheses.
- Technical Communications: Original tests or descriptions of equipment, software or data.
- Short Communications: As for research articles or discussions of articles published in the journal, but limited to 2000 words/word equivalents.
Authors must also supply (before the manuscript is finally accepted for publication)
- three electronic copies of the final version of the manuscript (see section below),
- a Copyright Transfer Agreement with original signature(s) - without this we are unable to accept the submission, and
- permission grants - if the manuscript contains extracts, including illustrations, from other copyright works (including material from on-line or intranet sources) it is the author's responsibility to obtain written permission from the owners of the publishing rights to reproduce such extracts using the Wiley Permission Request Form. Permission grants should be submitted with the manuscript.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been previously published and should not be submitted for publication elsewhere while they are under consideration by Wiley. Submitted material will not be returned to the author unless specifically requested.
Electronic submission. The electronic copy of the final, revised manuscript must be sent to the Editor together with the paper copy which will be used as the reference copy. Disks should be PC or Mac formatted and should clearly indicate the software package used, the name of the author and the name of the journal. We are able to use most word processing packages, but prefer Word or WordPerfect, TeX or one of its derivatives.
Illustrations should be submitted in electronic format where possible. Each figure should be saved as a separate file, in TIFF or EPS format preferably, and include the source file used (e.g. Corel Draw / Adobe Illustrator). All disks should be clearly labelled with the software package used to create them; we favour dedicated illustration packages over tools such as Excel or Powerpoint. If Excel is used place charts on separate work-sheets and do not use tints, shading or colours.
Manuscript style. The language of the journal is English. All submissions including book reviews should be printed on one side of the paper, be double-line spaced and have a margin of 3cm all round. No footnotes or appendices should be included. Illustrations and tables should be printed on separate sheets, and not be incorporated into the text.
All submissions should include:
- A title page with the full title, a short title of up to 70 characters and the names and affiliations of all authors. The full address, including email, telephone and fax, of the corresponding author should be given.
- The name(s) of any sponsor(s) of the research contained in the paper, along with grant number(s).
- An abstract of up to 300 words for a Research Article or Technical Communication and 100 words for a Short Communication except book reviews. An abstract is a concise summary of the whole paper, not just the conclusions, and is understandable without reference to the rest of the paper. It should normally contain no citation to other published work.
- Up to five keywords that describe your paper for indexing purposes.
Reference style. References should be quoted in the text as name and year and listed at the end of the paper alphabetically. Where reference is made to more than one work by the same author published in the same year, identify each citation in the text as follows: (Collins, 1998a), (Collins, 1998b). Where three or more authors are listed in the reference list, please cite in the text as (Collins et al., 1998).
All references must be complete and accurate. Online citations should include date of access. If necessary, cite unpublished or personal work in the text but do not include it in the reference list. References should be listed in the following style:

Illustrations and Tables. Each illustration and table should be supplied on a separate sheet, with the first author's name, the figure number and the top of the figure clearly marked, on the reverse. Only original photographs should be supplied. Photocopies or previously printed material cannot be used. Photomicrographs should have a linear scale on them. Line artwork must be high-quality laser output (not photocopies). Grey shading (tints)are not acceptable; lettering must be of a reasonable size that would still be clearly legible (8 point or larger) upon reduction, and consistent within each figure and set of figures. Artwork should be supplied at the intended size for printing. The artwork must be sized to the text width of 15cm (double column).
The cost of printing colour illustrations in the journal will be charged to the author. There is a charge for printing colour illustrations of approximately £500 per page. If colour illustrations are supplied electronically in either TIFF or EPS format, they may be used in the PDF of the article at no cost to the author, even if this illustration was printed in black and white in the journal. The PDF will appear on the Wiley InterScience site.
Copyright. To enable the publisher to disseminate the author's work to the fullest extent, the author must sign a Copyright Transfer Agreement, transferring copyright in the article from the author to the publisher, and submit the original signed agreement with the final version of the article accepted for publication. A copy of the agreement to be used (which may be photocopied or printed from the website) can be found in Earth Surface Processes and Landforms. Copies may also be obtained from the journal editor or publisher or may be printed from this website.
Further Information. Proofs will be sent to the author for checking. This stage should be used only to correct errors that may have been introduced during the production process. Prompt return of the corrected proofs, preferably within two days of receipt, will minimise the risk of the paper being held over to a later issue. 25 complimentary offprints will be provided to the author who checked the proofs, unless otherwise indicated. Further offprints and copies of the journal may be ordered. There is no page charge to authors.
