About the journal

 

Ear and Hearing publishes articles of interest to those involved in the assessment, diagnosis, and management of auditory and vestibular disorders. The Journal is of primary interest to audiologists, otologists, educators, and to those involved in the design, manufacture, and distribution of amplification systems. The goals of the Journal are in harmony with the aims of The American Auditory Society: to increase knowledge of human hearing, to promote conservation of hearing, and to foster (re)habilitation of persons with hearing impairments.

Permissions Requests

Submission of manuscripts: conventional method

Required number. An original and four copies, including the abstract, figures, figure legends, tables and references.

Illustrative materials. The original submission should include laser-printed copies of figures/illustrations. Please do not send any original artwork with your initial submission. The editorial office will request your original artwork with your final accepted manuscript. At that time one set of original artwork or one set of black and white glossy prints, preferably 5 ¡Á 7 inches, must be submitted. Original black and white laser-printed figures are acceptable. Color illustrations must be submitted as glossy prints.

Submission of manuscripts: electronic method

Address for submission: Send your manuscript in a single file, as an attachment, to: eheditor@iupui.edu

Format. An electronic submission of a manuscript should be as a single file, with all figures/illustrations included in that file. Acceptable formats for the file are: Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, or Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) file. The organization of the article should be the same as for paper-based conventional submissions (see above).

Editorial process. The submitted manuscript will be reviewed by up to three peers selected by the appropriate section editor. Every attempt will be made to render an initial editorial decision within 12 weeks of receipt of the manuscript.

Revisions. Manuscripts requiring revision should be returned to the Editor-in-Chief within six months. Revised manuscripts returned later than six months will be considered new submissions.

Publication. The final version of the accepted manuscript must be submitted on disk, along with the hard copies (original and three copies).

Copyright. Published articles will be copyrighted in the name of Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins. Any material reproduced in an article that has been previously copyrighted must conform to current regulations. The author is responsible for providing the Editorial Office with permission conforming to legal standards before previously copyrighted material can be reproduced.

Authors¡¯ Responsibility. Authors are responsible for all statements made in their work, including changes made by the copy editor (which they will have an opportunity to verify).

Cover Letter. Authors should enclose a letter requesting that their manuscript be considered for publication in Ear & Hearing. Authors are also encouraged to suggest potential reviewers for their submission. All suggestions, although nonbinding, will be considered important information for arranging an unbiased and constructive peer-review process.

Disclosures. Authors must disclose in the cover letter any closely related manuscripts that have been published or that have been submitted for publication. If the manuscript reports studies with humans or animals, authors must declare in the cover letter that they obtained appropriate Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval. For studies without IRB approval, authors must declare in the cover letter that they abided by established international research codes of ethics (e.g., 1) International Research Codes of Ethics (1990). Authors must disclose in the Acknowledgements any association that poses a potential conflict of interest with regard to the submitted manuscript.

Organization of articles

General. Manuscripts must be double-spaced on 8.5 ¡Á 11 inch white bond paper. Margins must be 1.5 inches (top, bottom, and sides). Each page must be numbered and identified by a running title. Style requirements are consistent with the standards of the American Psychological Association (APA).

Title Page. This page must include the title, the authors' names, affiliations (current affiliations if different), the date, the corresponding author, including his/her telephone number, fax number, and address, and a running head of less than 55 characters.

Corresponding Author Page. This page must include the name, academic degree, address, telephone number, and fax number for page proofs, correspondence, and requests for reprints.

Structured Abstract. This page must contain the following information.

Objective. State the objective or question addressed by the research. Any hypothesis should also be stated.

Design. Describe the basic experimental design of the study. The number of subjects and how they were selected should be provided.

Results. State the main results of the study.

Conclusions. State the conclusions of the study that are directly supported by the data, along with the clinical implications or applicability.

Submissions of a tutorial nature may provide a general (traditional) abstract without the above structure.

Tables. Each table must be double-spaced on a separate page with a caption. Tables are numbered consecutively beginning with Table 1. Tables must not duplicate information in the text or in the figures.

Figures. Each figure must be submitted in either one-column or two-column width. The figure should be clearly labeled on the reverse side, with the figure number, the authors's names, and an arrow pointing to the TOP of the figure. Photographs must be submitted unmounted. Photographs of a subject that disclose his/her identity must be accompanied by a signed permission conforming to legal standards. Whenever the Editorial Board considers the use of color to be an integral part of the presentation of the research, color illustrations will be published without charge to the author(s).

Figure Legends. Legends for the illustrations should be double-spaced on a separate page with the numbers corresponding to the figures.

Acknowledgments. This section must acknowledge all funding sources supporting the research on a separate page, double spaced. Technical assistance and professional colleagues may also be recognized.

References. References should be double-spaced, & typed in the APA reference style. Citations within the text should also conform to APA style. For more specific information, consult the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. Information about the manual may be obtained by contacting the APA Order Department, P.O. Reference Notes. Reference notes refer to citations from non-archival sources, e.g., an unpublished presentation at a meeting, a personal communication, etc. Entries should be double-spaced, & typed in the APA reference style. The Reference Notes section (heading, & entries) should begin below the last reference, on the same page. Citations within the text should refer to the author Reference Note Number, not author-date, e.g., according to Keith (Reference Note 1) or (Keith Reference Note 1)

Organization of Brief Reports. As above, with the following stipulations.

Abstract. Maximum of 100 words.

Text. Maximum of 1500 words.

Illustrative Materials. Maximum of 3 figures or tables.

References. Maximum of 15 references.

Reports of a technical nature will be allowed some leniency in meeting the stipulations.
