Publisher: Danish Medical Association and the Danish Medical Society

Submission guidelines may be sent upon request to the Editorial Secretariat.

Instructions to Authors

The Danish Medical Bulletin (DMB) will publish original papers and review papers from authors around the World.

Furthermore, we will publish DMSc-theses and PhD-theses from medical faculties in Danish Universities, and clinical guidelines approved by Danish scientific societies.

For all papers, theses or guidelines one of the authors has to be a member of the Danish Medical Association in order to have their work published for free in the DMB. If the author is not a member of the Danish Medical Association an author fee will be applied. The author fee for an acticle is currently 2,000 Euro and 1,000 Euro for theses or guideline paper.

Submission of theses or guideline papers:
Go to Ugeskriftet.dk for detailed instructions (in Danish - non-Danish authors can contact the editorial office for help). For clinical guidelines, the authors should provide a letter from the chairman/president of the scientific society, that they 1) have read the manuscript, 2) agree with the content to the extent that it can be published, and 3) that they recommend publication in its present form.

Submission of manuscripts:
1. Original papers and review papers from
outside Denmark should be submitted by e-mail to dmb@dadl.dk. We only receive these manuscripts by e-mail.

2. Original articles and review papers from Danish authors should be submitted through the electronic manuscript system at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/ugeskriftet. Please notify in the submission that the paper is intended for The Danish Medical Bulletin.

Authorship:

Authors should fulfill the criteria for authorship set by the ICMJE-group (www.icmje.org). All three criteria for authorship should be fulfilled. This has to be stated in the authorship declaration  and should be submitted by e-mail to dmb@dadl.dk  for foreign authors or through the electronic submission system for Danish authors.

ICMJE Uniform Disclosure Form for Potential Conflicts of Interest

Example filled out Form: ICMJE Uniform Disclosure Form for Potential Conflicts of Interest

We ask authors to disclose their potential conflicts of interest for the submitted paper. Thus, an “ICMJE uniform disclosure form for potential conflicts of interest” should be submitted for each author on the paper. These forms can be uploaded through the electronic manuscript system or sent by email to the editorial office.

Manuscript length:

Original papers: Maximum size is 14,000 units including spaces but without references, figures and tables. Maximum 20 references. The abstract should maximum contain 1,600 units including spaces. Abstracts should be structured including the sections: introduction, methods, results, conclusion and funding and trial registration. Original articles from Denmark shall also publish a Danish summary in the Ugeskrift for Læger (this abstract should be as close to 3,200 units as possible including spaces). The English abstracts will be available on Medline, but not the Danish summary from Ugeskrift for Læger. Please refer to the instructions for authors for Ugeskrift for Læger for detailed instructions.

Reviews: Maximum size is 20,000 units including spaces but without references, figures and tables. Maximum 40 references. The abstract should not exceed 1,600 units in length including spaces. The abstract should not be structured.

Theses and guidelines: No maximum length, and no maximum number of references. Theses and guidelines should be submitted using special Word templates, where the authors provide the manuscript in its final form with finished layout for direct publication. Both theses and clinical guidelines shall include an English summary for publication on MEDLINE. The summary should not exceed 3,200 units in length including spaces, and it does not have to be structured.
Word templates: Go to Ugeskriftet.dk for detailed instructions (use the same instruction to guidelines as to theses).

Study registration

All studies including human subjects have to be registered on an open web-site such as e.g. www.clinicaltrials.gov. The registration number should be included in the abstract of the original article after the conclusion as well as in the methods section in the paper.

Figures and tables

When presenting exact data use a table, whereas a graph is more adequate whwn the aim is to illustrate a tendency. Avoid three-dimensional presentations. Do not present your data twice (e.g. in text and table or figure). We prefer illustrations in their original format, e.g. as PowerPoint or Excel files.

If an illustration has been published before we need a written permission from the copyright holder to reproduce the illustration in your article.

References:

The list of references should be performed according to the guidelines stated by the ICMJE-group (www.icmje.org). The DMB requires the following exceptions:
1. If more than three authors on a given publication only the first three authors are stated
in the reference list followed by “et al.”.
2.  No point after the name of the journal.
3.  No issue number of the journal, only volume number and page numbers.

The title of the Journal should be abbreviated according to MEDLINE (www.nlm.nih.gov).
References should be numbered consecutively throughout the text.

Example:
Gögenur I, Kücükakin B, Bisgaard T et al. The effect of melatonin on sleep quality after laparoscopic cholecystectomy: a randomized placebo-controlled trial. Anesth Analg 2009;108:1152-1156.
