About the journal

Aims & Scope
2007 Impact Factor: 5.145
Ranking: 2/73 (Toxicology)
?Thomson Scientific, Journal Citation Reports? 2008

Critical Reviews in Toxicology provides up-to-date, objective analyses of topics related to the mechanisms of action, responses, and assessment of health risks due to toxicant exposure. The journal publishes critical, comprehensive reviews of research findings in toxicology and the application of toxicological information in assessing human health hazards and risks. Toxicants of concern include commodity and specialty chemicals such as formaldehyde, acrylonitrile, and pesticides; pharmaceutical agents of all types; consumer products such as macronutrients and food additives; environmental agents such as ambient ozone; and occupational exposures such as asbestos and benzene.

Toxicological responses reviewed range from observations at the molecular and cellular level to physiological and pathological alterations in intact mammals and populations of laboratory animals and people. Responses in all major organ systems are of interest, with emphasis on those responses identified as human diseases or their precursor events. Particular attention is given to cancer, reproductive, and developmental effects as responses of particular social concern.

Review manuscripts that are of keen interest are those which integrate information from multiple levels of biological organization in order to estimate health risks in the context of relevant human exposures in the environment, in the workplace, and as a result of the use of consumer products and pharmaceuticals.

Instructions to Authors

Instructions for Authors
General Instructions

All manuscripts are to be submitted via the Manuscript Central website. Paper manuscripts are not accepted. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material from other sources and are required to sign an agreement for the transfer of copyright to the publisher. All accepted manuscripts, artwork, and photographs become the property of the publisher.

The author should provide the names and addresses of 5 prospective reviewers. The editor will give consideration to the proposed reviewers in selecting a slate of reviewers.

Preparation of Manuscripts

Manuscripts must be typewritten and double-spaced. Roman-Times is the preferred typeface for printouts of manuscripts. All figures and tables should be uploaded as separate files.
Authors should write in clear, concise English. The responsibility for all aspects of manuscript preparation rests with the authors. Extensive changes or rewriting of the manuscript will not be undertaken by the Editor.

All manuscripts should start with an abstract not to exceed 200 words as well as a list of key (indexing) terms. Three to six key words or terms not in the title will assist indexers in cross indexing your article.

Published manuscripts are typically 25 to 100 printed pages in length. Collections of manuscripts on related topics will be considered. However, such submissions or long individual reviews (over 100 printed pages) should be discussed with the Editor prior to submission.

Invited and Unsolicited Reviews Critical Reviews in Toxicology publishes both invited and unsolicted reviews prepared by authors who are acknowledged experts in the subject matter covered in the review. Individuals wishing to submit a review manuscript for publication in the journal are encouraged to first provide the editor a prospectus that includes the proposed title, authorship, a brief statement of the authors' qualifications, and an outline of the proposed review with an indication of the manuscript's anticipated length. The editor will review the prospectus and inform the author on the advisability of submitting a complete manuscript.

References

Within the text, the references are typically cited by author and year. The list of references appears alphabetically by primary author's last name. The style of citation is shown in the following examples:
In text: --- "including data from Mauderly (2000)," or "Mauderly (2000) described ---"

In references list:

McConnell, R. F. (1989). Comparative aspects of contraceptive steroids: Effects observed in rats. Toxicol Pathol. 17(2):385-388.

Abbreviations

Italic or boldface type should be clearly indicated, and Greek or unusual characters should be written with a slant line rather than in the usual manner, so that only a single line of type is required.

Tables

Tables should be used only when they can present information more efficiently than running text. Care should be taken to avoid any arrangement that unduly increases the size of a table, and the column heads should be made as brief as possible, using abbreviations liberally. Lines of data should not be numbered nor run numbers given unless those numbers are needed for reference in the text. Columns should not be used to contain only one or two entries, nor should the same entry be repeated numerous times consecutively. Tables All figures and tables should be uploaded as separate files.
Figures and Graphs

All illustration files should be in EPS or TIFF format. Gray shading should be avoided in line drawings; use hatching patterns where possible. Lettering and labels within figures should be consistent in font and size. The preferred resolution for journal-quality reproduction is 300 dpi. Figures should be numbered in series and all captions should be typed double-spaced on a separate sheet. All figures and tables should be uploaded as separate files. It is the responsibility of the author to obtain permission to use previously published material.

Color illustrations will be considered for publication; however, the author will be required to bear the full cost involved in their printing and publication. The charge for the first page with color is $1000.00. The next three pages with color are $500.00 each. A custom quote will be provided for color art totaling more than 4 journal pages. Good-quality color prints or files should be provided in their final size. The publisher has the right to refuse publication of color prints deemed unacceptable.

Formulas and Equations

Empirical and structural formulas and mathematical and chemical equations should be arranged to fill adequately the width of a single or double column. Subscripts and especially superscripts should be written with care and exponents should be set up in a single line. All signs such as + - = should be spaced, but the components of mathematical products should not be spaced. Organic structural formulas should be submitted as copy suitable for direct photographic reproduction. Do not use structures when a simple formula can be carefully arranged and executed (preferably typewritten) with special attention to corrections of symbols, location of subscripts, superscripts, and electric charges, and the placing and close-up of single and multiple bond lines. Use a copy of the structure in the text at the point of proper citation, but when originals are provided, group these at the end of the manuscript. All furnished art must be complete. Compound numbers and other material to appear in the copy should be lettered, not typewritten. This material will not be added to original art.
Acknowledgement

An acknowledgement section should be provided at the end of the text section prior to references. The acknowledgements should make clear who paid for the work product. If the work was done in the course of the individual's regular employment, that should be stated. If the review was prepared under a grant or contract with a government agency, trade association, or private firm, that should be clearly stated. The author(s) should also identify in the Acknowledgements any other considerations relating to potential conflicts of interest or bias they feel should be made known to the readers.
Declaration of Interest

It is the policy of all Informa Healthcare, to adhere in principle to the Conflict of Interest policy recommended by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE). (http://www.icmje.org/index.html#conflict)

All authors must disclose any financial and personal relationships with other people or organisations that could inappropriately influence (bias) their work. It is the sole responsibility of authors to disclose any affiliation with any organisation with a financial interest, direct or indirect, in the subject matter or materials discussed in the manuscript (such as consultancies, employment, paid expert testimony, honoraria, speakers bureaus, retainers, stock options or ownership, patents or patent applications or travel grants) that may affect the conduct or reporting of the work submitted. All sources of funding for research are to be explicitly stated. If uncertain as to what might be considered a potential conflict of interest, authors should err on the side of full disclosure.

All submissions to the journal must include full disclosure of all relationships that could be viewed as presenting a potential conflict of interest. If there are no conflicts of interest, authors should state that there are none. This must be stated at the point of submission (within the manuscript after the main text under a subheading "Declaration of interest" and where available within the appropriate field on the journal's Manuscript Central site). This may be made available to reviewers and will appear in the published article at the discretion of the Editors or Publisher.

If no conflict is declared, the following statement will be attached to all articles:

Declaration of interest: The authors report no conflicts of interest. The authors alone are responsible for the content and writing of the paper.

The intent of this policy is not to prevent authors with these relationships from publishing work, but rather to adopt transparency such that readers can make objective judgements on conclusions drawn.

NIH Public Access Policy

In consideration of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Public Access Policy, Informa Healthcare acknowledges that the broad and open dissemination of NIH-funded research results may benefit future scientific and medical research. Because we value the current and future contributions our journals make to the scientific body of knowledge, we have made certain that our policies accommodate those authors who wish to submit to PubMed Central.

Informa Healthcare's position with respect to public access to NIH-funded work published in Informa Healthcare journals is as follows:

Informa Healthcare authors may voluntarily submit their funded work to PubMed Central after a 12 month embargo period.
“Funded work?shall be defined as the final, peer-reviewed manuscript that is accepted by the Editor in Chief of the journal. This manuscript must not be altered by Publisher's copyediting and typesetting services.
This embargo period begins the day the work is published online at www.informaworld.com.
