hematology, and reviews and original research articles in the field of geriatric oncology. Most of the reviews are written on invitation. All reviews and original research articles are subject to peer review before final acceptance.

Authors who wish to submit reviews to the Journal are requested to submit a short synopsis of their chosen subject to the Editor, and to indicate the deadline by which they expect to submit their final manuscript. Authors of original research articles are requested to submit their manuscripts directly to the Editor. Further information regarding the submission of manuscripts and guidelines for the preparation of the manuscripts can be found in the Guidelines for Authors.

Instructions to Authors

This journal presents authoritative, in-depth reviews of the most important recently published papers on selected topics or areas in oncology and hematology, together with a critical evaluation of the concepts, methods and data included in these papers. Original research articles are also published in the field of geriatric oncology. In writing the article, the author should assume that the reader is conversant with the fundamentals of the discipline but may not have extensive knowledge of the topic under review.

Submission of manuscripts: Authors are invited to submit ideas for review articles to the Editor-in-Chief, enclosing a brief summary. Unsolicited review manuscripts or original research articles in the field of geriatric oncology will also be considered for publication. All articles, whether written upon invitation or unsolicited, will be subject to peer review, and the author may be requested to revise his/her article prior to publication. Submission of a manuscript gives the Publisher the right to publish that paper if it is accepted. It is the responsibility of the author to ensure that the work reported complies with national ethical guidelines. Authors are requested to identify possible conflicts of interest. The article submitted for publication should be a critical review providing a synthesis of the findings of the papers reviewed, as related to the current 'state-of-the-art', rather than a general review of the subject matter. The preferred medium of submission is on disk with accompanying manuscript (see 'Electronic manuscripts' below). Manuscripts should be typed and should range between 20 and 40 printed pages in length. A printed page of regular text will average approximately 550 words. Approximately three double-spaced, typed paged will equal one printed page. All pages should be numbered consecutively in the following order: Title page, Abstract, Text, References, Tables, Figure legends and Figures. Authors are requested to supply the Editor-in-Chief with three complete copies of the manuscript. Authors must include the names (with phone, fax and e-mail addresses whenever available) of four potential reviewers of the manuscript.

Electronic manuscripts. Electronic manuscripts have the advantage that there is no need for the rekeying of text, thereby avoiding the possibility of introducing errors and resulting in reliable and fast delivery of proofs. The preferred storage medium is a 5.25 or 3.5 inch disk in MS-DOS format, although other systems are welcome, e.g., Macintosh (in this case, save your file in the usual manner, do not use the option 'save in MS-DOS format'). Your disk and (exactly matching) printed version (printout, hardcopy) should be submitted together to the accepting editor. In case of revision, the same procedure should be followed such that, on acceptance of the article, the file on disk and the printout are identical. Please specify the type of computer and word-processing package used (do not convert your text file to plain ASCII). Ensure that the letter 'l' and digit '1' (also letter 'O' and digit '0') have been used properly, and format your article (tabs, indents etc.) consistently. Characters not available on your word processor (Greek letters, mathematical symbols etc.) should not be left open but indicated by a unique code (e.g., gralpha, @, # etc., for the Greek letter ). Such codes should be used consistently throughout the entire text. Please make a list of such codes and provide a key. Do not allow your word processor to introduce word splits and do not use a 'justified' layout. Please adhere strictly to the general instructions on style/arrangement and, in particular, the reference style of the journal. Please name your files using the correct software extension (e.g. fig1.cdr, tb1-6.xls, text.doc, fig1a.eps, fig1.tif, etc) and save text on a separate disk from the graphics. Please label all disks with your name, journal to be published in, software (e.g. Word 7, Adobe Illustrator 6.0), compression software if used, hardware used (e.g. Mac, PC) and file names. It is essential that the electronic and hard copy versions are identical. Computer generated illustrations and halftones/line/tones (either colour or black & white) are acceptable. Since we cannot guarantee the usability of graphic files, hard copies of all illustrations must accompany the accepted printout of the manuscript in all cases. The following points should be taken into consideration when preparing electronic graphic files :
- TIFF or EPS files are preferred. Sugested packages for line graphics are Adobe Illustrator (Version 3.0 or above), Freehand and Corel Draw. Graphics made in WordPerfect or Word generally have too low a resolution. Files of scanned line graphics can be accepted preferably at a resolution of 1000 dpi, for scanned halftones (300 dpi) and scanned line/tones (500 dpi).
- Produce computer generated graphics in greyscale if you require these to be published in black & white, also where possible, supply the original halftones as they are to be reproduced (i.e. black & white or colour).
- Colour should be scanned in at 300 dpi (500 dpi for colour line/tones). With CMYK electronic files include a 4-colour machine or cromalin proof and check that all the separations (if provided) are colour identified.
- Try to create your graphics near to the size they will be finally printed at by looking at earlier published manuscripts. This will help with the lettering and resolution of your files, as the final font size should be about 6-8 pt and resolution will be lost if it is necessary to enlarge a file and lettering may need re-keying if the file has to be reduced significantly. Always use the standard Adobe set of fonts.

Authors in Japan please note: Upon request, Elsevier Science Japan will provide authors with a list of people who can check and improve the English of their paper (before submission). Please contact our Tokyo office: Elsevier Science Japan, 9-15, Higashi-Azabu 1-chome, Minato-ku, Tokyo 106-0044; Japan; Tel. (+81) 3-5561-5032; Fax: (+81)3-5561-5045; E-mail: info@elsevier.co.jp.

Correspondence should be addressed to: Dr. M.S. Aapro, Admin Office of the Editor in Chief, Clinique de Genolier, Inst. Multidisciplinaire d'Oncologie, Route du Muids, CH-1272 Genolier, Switzerland. (Tel: (+41) 22 366 9136; Fax: (+41) 22 366 9131; E-mail: critical-reviews@cdg.ch).

Preparation of the manuscript: Authors should conform to the guidelines and are requested to contact the Editor should questions arise. The first page(s) of the manuscript should contain: (1) the title of the paper; (2) the name(s) of the author(s); (3) the complete affiliation(s) of the author(s); (4) Table of Contents; (5) Abstract of up to 150 words (6) Key words; (7) a short biography of the corresponding author with additional biographies from co-authors should they feel necessary; and (8) the name, address, telephone and fax numbers of the author to whom communication regarding the manuscript and reprints should be directed.

Headings should be clearly identified as follows:
1. Major heading
1.1. First subheading
1.1.1. Second subheading
1.1.1.1. Third subheading

Equations should be typed at the appropriate position in the text, and should be numbered consecutively using Arabic numbers. Symbols, e.g., Greek letters, should be clearly identified in cases where confusion could arise. Please check that the spacing before and after each symbol is correct and that superscript or subscript symbols are clearly evident.

Figures should be submitted as black and white glossy prints. On the back of each figure the figure number, orientation and name of the author should be indicated. If photographs are unobtainable, the camera-ready pen-and-ink graphics are acceptable. In preparing the figures, the page dimensions should be considered: typesetting area 17.7 and 8.4 x 23.5 cm, respectively. Letters and symbols used in the figures must be large enough to remain clearly legible after reduction. As the clarity of a printed reproduction depends on the quality of the original, authors are urged to submit the highest quality photographs available. All figures must be accompanied by a legend, which should be typewritten on a separate sheet of paper. Figures are to be referred to at the appropriate point in the text, and are to be numbered consecutively with Arabic numbers.

Figure legends should consist of an introductory title sentence and a brief description of the data contained within the figure.

Colour figures should be discussed with the Editor and are accepted only if the author agrees to bear the cost of reproduction.

Tables should be numbered consecutively (using Arabic numbers) and referred to in the text in numerical order where they are to appear. All tables must have a title, and may be accompanied by a brief description of the data contained within the table. Footnotes appear below the table and are to be indicated by superscript lower-case letters. Wherever possible, vertical columns should be used to present the data. Numerical data should be aligned using the decimal points; in numbers less than one, a zero should precede the decimal point. Ditto marks must not be used.

References should be indicated sequentially in the text using Arabic numbers within square brackets. A list of references should appear at the end of the article, with all authors listed where there are six or less. or with the first three followed by et al. where there are seven or more. Journal name abbreviations should conform to those used in Index Medicus and inclusive page numbers should be given. Do not include references to personal communications, unpublished data or manuscripts either 'in preparation' or 'submitted for publication'. If essential, such material may be incorporated into the appropriate place in the text. Recheck references in the text against the reference list after your manuscript has been revised. Incomplete references can result in publication delay.
