About the journal

Aims & Scope
2007 Impact Factor: 8.993
Ranking: 18/263 (Biochemistry & Molecular Biology)
Thomson Scientific, Journal Citation Reports? 2008

As the discipline of biochemistry and molecular biology have greatly advanced in the last quarter century, significant contributions have been made towards the advancement of general medicine, genetics, immunology, developmental biology, and biophysics. Investigators in a wide range of disciplines increasingly require an appreciation of the significance of current biochemical and molecular biology advances while, members of the biochemical and molecular biology community itself seek concise information on advances in areas remote from their own specialties.

Critical Reviews in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology believes that well-written review articles prove an effective device for the integration and meaningful comprehension of vast, often contradictory, literature. Review articles also provide an opportunity for creative scholarship by synthesizing known facts, fruitful hypotheses, and new concepts.  Accordingly, Critical Reviews in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology publish high-quality reviews that organize, evaluate, and present the current status of high-impact, current issues in the area of biochemistry and molecular biology.

Topics are selected on the advice of an advisory board of outstanding scientists, who also suggest authors of special competence. The topics chosen are sufficiently broad to interest a wide audience of readers, yet focused enough to be within the competence of a single author. Authors are chosen based on their activity in the field and their proven ability to produce a well-written publication.

Instructions to Authors

Instructions for Authors
General Instructions for Initial Submission. Manuscripts are scheduled by invitation of the editorial board. Note that the due dates are critical for the maintenance of publication schedules. All submissions should be made online at Critical Reviews in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology's Manuscript Central site. New users should first create an account. Once a user is logged onto the site submissions should be made via the Author Centre. At the time of submission, authors are encouraged to include a list of six to eight scientists with appropriate expertise to serve as referees for the article. Instructions for the preparation of PDF files are given below. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material from other sources and are required to sign an agreement for the transfer of copyright to the publisher. All accepted manuscripts, artwork, and photographs become the property of the publisher.
Preparation of Manuscripts. Manuscripts must be typewritten and double-spaced. Roman-times is the preferred typeface for printouts of manuscripts. All pages should be numbered consecutively, starting with the title page and including pages containing tables and figure legends. References, tables, figure legends, and furnished art should be grouped together at the end of the manuscript to facilitate processing. Authors should write in clear, concise English. The responsibility for all aspects of manuscript preparation rests with the authors. Extensive changes for rewriting of the manuscript will not be undertaken by the Editor. The title page should include the title, author, author affiliations, and contact information for the corresponding author, and three to six key terms not in the title. The key words will assist indexers in cross indexing your article. All manuscripts should be accompanied by an abstract not to exceed 200 words as well as a list of key (indexing) terms. The body of the manuscript should be followed by the References, the Tables, the Table legends, and the Figure legends. If an acknowledgement is included, it should be incorporated into the text immediately before the reference list.

References, Abbreviations. Please note that the CRBMB citation style has changed. Manuscripts submitted in another format may be returned to the author(s) for reformatting. References in the text should list the author's last name and the year in parentheses, in the form (Doe, 2003). In the case of two authors, the citation should give both authors' last names, separated by “and? followed by the year (Doe and Jones, 2003). In case of more than two authors, et al., should be used following the first author's name, again followed by the year (Doe et al., 2003). In the reference list, references should be alphabetized. References should be arranged and punctuated as follows:

Askoy, M., Erdem, S., and Dincol, G.1976. Types of leukemia in chronic benzene poisoning. Acta Haematol. 55:66-75.

Malacuso, P. 1969. Hydrogen sulfide. In: Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology. pp. 199-201. Mark, H.F., McKetta, I.J., and Othinarm D.J., Eds., John Wiley, New York.

Zar, J.H. 1984. Biostatistical Analysis. Prentice Hall, Englewood Cliffs, N.J.

If there are more than 10 authors, list the first 10 followed by a comma and et al. Italic or boldface type should be clearly indicated, and Greek or unusual characters should be written plainly or explained by annotations. Simple fractional expressions should be written with a slant line rather than in the usual manner, so that only a single line of type is required.

Tables. Tables should be used only when they can present information more efficiently than running text. Care should be taken to avoid any arrangement that unduly increases the depth of a table, and the column heads should be made as brief as possible, using abbreviations liberally. Lines of data should not be numbered nor run numbers given unless those numbers are needed for reference in the text. Columns should not be used to contain only one or two entries, nor should the same entry be repeated numerous times consecutively. Tables should be grouped at the end of the manuscript on separate sheets.

Figures and Graphs. Illustrations submitted (line drawings, halftones, photos, photomicrographs, etc.) should be clean originals or digital files. Digital files are recommended for highest quality reproduction and should follow these guidelines: 300 dpi or higher; sized to fit on journal page; EPS, TIFF, or PSD format only; submitted as separate files, not embedded in text files. Color figures may be incorporated into the online version of the paper for no extra charge. Authors should supply a black and white version of the figures for print and a color version for online. Only one figure legend should be supplied that incorporates any color information. A brief note will be added to the figure legend to indicate that the art will appear in color online. Color reproduction in print figures is also possible provided the author bear all incremental charges. The charge for the first page of color artwork is $1000.00. Subsequent pages are $500.00 each. A custom quote will be provided for color art totaling more than 4 journal pages. Good-quality color prints or files should be provided in their final size. The publisher has the right to refuse publication of any artwork deemed unacceptable.

Formulas and Equations. Empirical and structural formulas and mathematical and chemical equations should be arranged to fill adequately the width of a single or double column. Subscripts and especially superscripts should be written with care and exponents should be set up in a single line. All signs such as +-= < >should be spaced, but the components of mathematical products should not be spaced. Organic structural formulas should be submitted as copy suitable for direct photographic reproduction. Do not use structures when a simple formula matter can be carefully arranged and executed (preferably typewritten) with special attention to corrections of symbols, location of subscripts, superscripts, and electric charges, and the placing and close-up of single and multiple bond lines. All furnished art must be complete. Compound numbers and other material to appear in the copy should be included in the original art.

Policy on Inclusion of Unpublished Data. Unpublished data in the form of figures, tables, or quantitative statements in the text, should not be included in an article under any circumstances. A brief mention of the tentative conclusions of unpublished work is sometimes acceptable, as long as it is clearly identified as unpublished and tentative (not yet peer-reviewed).

Instructions for preparing the PDF file and email submission:

Step 1. Prepare the text in Microsoft Word 6.0 or later version.

Step 2. Prepare the graphics at publication quality resolution, using applications capable of generating high resolution TIFF or EPS files. Number each figure. It will be necessary to submit your final manuscript graphics in one of these formats if it is accepted. A website, http://cpc.cadmus.com/da/guidelines.asp, has very useful information on the preparation of graphics in TIFF or EPS formats.

Step 3. Using Adobe Acrobat, save your manuscript text and graphics in a single file in PDF format.

Step 4. After converting your manuscript text and figures to a single PDF file, carefully review a printed copy. Check file size (about 1-2 MB is ideal, but should not exceed 6 MB). If the file size exceeds 6 MB, please contact Carol Pfeffer at crbmb@biochem.wisc.edu.

Step 5. Submit the completed PDF file as an email attachment, and send it to crbmb@biochem.wisc.edu. In the cover letter (the e-mail itself), please include: Contact information for the Submitting Author, Information about the authors and manuscript, Your willingness to assume the charges for color figures in the print journal, if applicable Any other information you wish to convey to the editorial board

Reprints. Each corresponding author will receive a PDF file of the final version of their article. Reprints of individual articles are available for order at the time authors review page proofs. A discount on reprints is available to authors who order before print publication.

Declaration of Interest. It is the policy of all Informa Healthcare, to adhere in principle to the Conflict of Interest policy recommended by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE). (http://www.icmje.org/index.html#conflict)
All authors must disclose any financial and personal relationships with other people or organisations that could inappropriately influence (bias) their work. It is the sole responsibility of authors to disclose any affiliation with any organisation with a financial interest, direct or indirect, in the subject matter or materials discussed in the manuscript (such as consultancies, employment, paid expert testimony, honoraria, speakers bureaus, retainers, stock options or ownership, patents or patent applications or travel grants) that may affect the conduct or reporting of the work submitted. All sources of funding for research are to be explicitly stated. If uncertain as to what might be considered a potential conflict of interest, authors should err on the side of full disclosure.

All submissions to the journal must include full disclosure of all relationships that could be viewed as presenting a potential conflict of interest. If there are no conflicts of interest, authors should state that there are none. This must be stated at the point of submission (within the manuscript after the main text under a subheading "Declaration of interest" and where available within the appropriate field on the journal's Manuscript Central site).  This may be made available to reviewers and will appear in the published article at the discretion of the Editors or Publisher.

If no conflict is declared, the following statement will be attached to all articles:

Declaration of interest: The authors report no conflicts of interest. The authors alone are responsible for the content and writing of the paper.

The intent of this policy is not to prevent authors with these relationships from publishing work, but rather to adopt transparency such that readers can make objective judgements on conclusions drawn.

NIH Public Access Policy. In consideration of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Public Access Policy, Informa Healthcare acknowledges that the broad and open dissemination of NIH-funded research results may benefit future scientific and medical research.  Because we value the current and future contributions our journals make to the scientific body of knowledge, we have made certain that our policies accommodate those authors who wish to submit to PubMed Central.

Informa Healthcare's position with respect to public access to NIH-funded work published in Informa Healthcare journals is as follows:

Informa Healthcare authors may voluntarily submit their funded work to PubMed Central after a 12 month embargo period.
“Funded work?shall be defined as the final, peer-reviewed manuscript that is accepted by the Editor in Chief of the journal. This manuscript must not be altered by Publisher's copyediting and typesetting services.
This embargo period begins the day the work is published online at www.informaworld.com.
