About the journal
CORTEX is an international journal devoted to the study of the inter-relations of the nervous system and behavior, particularly as these are reflected in the effects of brain lesions on cognitive functions. It was founded in 1964.
Instructions to Authors
Manuscripts, including reviews, editorials, comments, and all communications relating to scientific matters should be submitted in English to:
Prof. Sergio Della Sala Editor of Cortex Neuropsychology Research Group Department of Psychology University of Aberdeen AB24-2UB Aberdeen, UK (e-mail: cortex@abdn.ac.uk).
Manuscripts may also be submitted to the co-editor:
Dr. Jordan Grafman Cognitive Neuroscience Section National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke Building 10, Room 5C205, 10 Center Drive MSC 1440, Bethesda, Maryland 20892-1440 - USA (e-mail: grafmanj@ninds.nih.gov).
Submission of a manuscript implies the understanding that it consists of original material that has not been and will not be published elsewhere. Brief communications (Notes), review articles and mini-reviews on topical issues will also be considered as well as comments on historical papers.
It should also be understood that all persons listed as authors of the manuscript have given their explicit approval to the paper in the form in which it has been submitted. If accepted for publication, copyright of the article will be assigned to the publisher. Permission to reproduce in any form an article in its entirety or in part must be sought from the publisher and the editor.
Books for Review: Please send books for review to the Books and New Media Review Editor: Dr. David Carey, Neuropsychology Research Group, Department of Psychology, University of Aberdeen, AB24-2UB Aberdeen, UK. Proposal for books or new media (e.g. web sites, CDroms) reviews should also be submitted to the Books Review Editor.
Disclaimer: Statements of fact or opinion in the articles published in Cortex are those of the respective contributors.
Manuscript Preparation: Authors should submit four copies of their manuscripts (one original typescript and three high quality copies). All copies (including references, legends and tables) must be typed double-spaced on one side of heavy-duty white paper of standard (approximately 22 x 28 cm.) size. These will not be returned if the paper is not accepted for publication. Number all pages.
Authors can also submit their manuscripts electronically, using a PDF file attachment to an e-mail, and sending it to . The PDF file must be a single file and an exact copy of the complete printed version of the manuscript. Please put in the body of the e-mail the software program used to create the file, the program version, and whether it is MAC or PC-based.
For both methods of submission, an e-mail message should be sent to the Cortex Editor that lists the title of the manuscript and the author(s).
Page 1 should contain the article title, the name and affiliation of all the authors and an abbreviated form of the title for the running page heading (not to exceed 42 characters including punctuation and spaces). The title-page should also include the address of the corresponding author, including e-mail address, fax and telephone numbers.
Page 2 should contain an abstract providing a clear and comprehensive idea of the content of the article not to exceed 300 words.
The style of writing should conform to English usage and syntax. Authors whose mother tongue is not English are urged to have their manuscripts checked for linguistic correctness before submission. Slang, technical jargon, obscure abbreviations and abbreviated phrasing should be avoided.
Manuscripts should comply with the Cortex style and referencing system. Cortex uses SI units, but seconds and milliseconds are abbreviated to "sec" and "msec". All measurements must be given in metric units. Avoid capitalising names of variables, conditions or factors (e.g. age). Do capitalise e.g. "Experiment 2", "Figure 3", "Table 1" and "Appendix".
All experimental work with patients and volunteers must be carried out according to the Declaration of Helsinki (British Medical Journal, 302: 1194, 1991).
Any conflict of interest should be disclosed in the covering letter.
Disk submittal. Authors of papers accepted for publication will be asked to send a disk with the final revision of their paper. Please copy the data on a clean disk labelled with the name of the first author, the file name and the writing programme used. The publisher's preferred programme is Word 97 (both MAC and PCs), with the file saved as ".doc". The illustrations would be better saved as high quality ".tif". The disk will not be returned. Please do not send a disk with your initial submission.
Illustrations: Use only illustrations that clarify and augment the text. Submit four copies of illustrations, unmounted and untrimmed. Do not send original artwork. Send at least one set of high-contrast glossy prints with the master copy of your manuscript. Lettering should be uniform, done professionally and large enough to be fully legible after a 50 to 60 percent size reduction. Preferred size for the illustrations is approximately 13 x 17 cm. They should be numbered in order of appearance with Arabic numerals. The title of the article, name of first author and the number of figure should be either in light pencil or typed on a gummed label and placed on the back of every illustration. The top should be designated.
Authors who wish to publish photographs from which patients can be clearly identified notwithstanding eye masking, or describe personal medical records, are requested to confirm in writing that they have obtained the patient's consent to do so.
Cortex will publish colour figures at no cost for the authors when strictly necessary (e.g. neuroimaging or original colour drawings of patients).
Legends: Captions for figures should be typed double-spaced beginning on a separate sheet of paper and should not be attached to the illustration.
Tables: Each table should be numbered consecutively (with Arabic numerals) and typed double-spaced on a separate page. For each table a short descriptive heading should appear (typed double-spaced) above the table. Pages for the tables should be of the same size as the pages for the text. Do not use larger size paper. If a table must be continued, use a second sheet and repeat all heads and stubs.
Release of Copyright: Manuscripts including illustrations or any other material previously published elsewhere must be accompanied by the appropriate copyright release. It is recognised that employees of the United States Federal Government are unable to reassign copyright since research conducted by federal employees are in the public domain.
Footnotes: Footnotes to the text should be kept to a minimum. They should be numbered consecutively throughout the article with superscript Arabic numerals. Type all text footnotes double-spaced on a separate page.
Acknowledgments: Reference to grants or other financial support and to assistance in conducting the study or preparing the manuscript should be typed on a separate page before the reference list.
References: Cite references in the text by surnames of the author and the publication date in parentheses, e.g. Broca (1861) or (Gelb and Goldstein, 1920); if the manuscript refers to more than one paper by the same author in a given year, the correct style is Marie (1908a) or Marie (1908b). If a work has two authors, always cite both names in the text. If the work has more than two authors, cite the first author followed by "et al." and the year of publication (De Renzi et al., 1980).
The reference list should be typed double-spaced and be located at the end of the article. It should include in alphabetical order all the references quoted in the text except unpublished data and personal communications. Journal titles should be written in full, not abbreviated. Journal titles and book titles only should be in italics.
