About the journal

Contact Dermatitis is designed primarily as a journal for clinicians who are interested in various aspects of environmental dermatitis. This includes both allergic and irritant (toxic) types of contact dermatitis, occupational (industrial) dermatitis and consumers' dermatitis from such products as cosmetics and toiletries. The journal aims at promoting and maintaining communication among dermatologists, industrial physicians, allergists and clinical immunologists, as well as chemists and research workers involved in industry and the production of consumer goods. Papers are invited on clinical observations, diagnosis and methods of investigation of patients, therapeutic measures, organisation and legislation relating to the control of occupational and consumers' contact dermatitis, preventive measures and educational advice. Papers concerned with the immunology of allergic contact dermatitis are invited for the purpose of bringing to the notice of the clinician, knowledge of important recent advances in the understanding of its theoretical basis, as well as papers on the physiology and pathology of the horny layer and epidermis in relation to its disturbance in the genesis of irritant dermatitis. A major section is devoted to Short Communications for the presentation of information on new contact allergens and dermatitic chemicals or other substances. An important objective of the Editor and Publisher is the rapid processing of submitted manuscripts, so that an early decision can be made on their acceptance, and final publication can be expedited by a short printing time.

Instructions to Authors

Authors submitting a paper do so on the understanding that the work has not been published before, is not being considered for publication elsewhere and has been read and approved by all authors. The submission of the manuscript by the authors means that the authors automatically agree to assign exclusive copyright to Blackwell Munksgaard if and when the manuscript is accepted for publication. When the manuscript has been accepted, the corresponding author will receive a copyright assignment form from the editorial office to be returned signed on behalf of all co-authors. The work shall not be published elsewhere in any language without the written consent of the publisher. The articles published in this journal are protected by copyright, which covers translation rights and the exclusive right to reproduce and distribute all of the articles printed in the journal. No material published in the journal may be stored on microfilm or videocassettes or in electronic databases and the like or reproduced photographically without the prior written permission of the publisher.

Copyright Assignment Form

Articles should, in most cases, not exceed 10 printed pages (approx. 700 words per printed page). Additional pages must be paid for by the authors at a present rate of DKK 700 per page.

Manuscripts, including tables and figures, should be sent in quadruplicate (the author retaining a further copy for himself), as they will be reviewed by two or more consulting editors.

The journal does not hold itself responsible for loss or damage to mailed manuscripts. Contributors are responsible for all statements made in their work, including changes made by the copy editor.

The paper should be submitted in English. Spelling may be British or American, but should be consistent.

Manuscripts - The following rules are in general agreement with "Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals" accepted by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (see ref. 1 below).

Type the manuscript on one side of the (A4) paper only, with wide margins and double spacing. Begin each manuscript component (title page, etc.) on separate pages. The pages of the manuscript - text, reference list, tables and legends to figures, in that order, should be numbered consecutively.

To facilitate the handling of manuscripts, texts should be submitted, whenever possible, in machine-readable form and accompanied by a diskette containing an exact copy of the manuscript with tables and figures in a separate file (TIFF, EPS or JPEG). The software used, the program version number, as well as the format of the diskette, should be clearly marked.

Title page containing: (1) a concise informative title; (2) name(s) of author(s): (3) name of department(s)/institution(s) to which the work is attributed; (4) name and address of author to whom correspondence about the manuscript, and requests for offprints should be referred; (5) if the title exceeds 40 characters (letters and spaces): a running head of no more than 40 characters.

Abstract and key words - The abstract must not exceed 200 words. It should state the purpose of the study, basic procedures (study subject/patients/animals and methods), main findings (specific data and statistical significance), and principal conclusions.

Below the abstract, provide 3-10 key words or short phrases that will assist indexers in cross indexing your article. Use terms from the Medical Subject Headings list from Index Medicus, whenever possible.

Introduction - Present the background briefly, but do not review the subject extensively. Give only pertinent references. State the specific questions you want to answer.

Patients and Methods/Materials and Methods - Describe selection of patients or experimental animals, including controls. Do not use patients' names or hospital numbers. Identify methods, apparatus (manufacturer's name and address) and procedures in sufficient detail to allow other workers to reproduce the results. Provide references and brief descriptions of methods that have been published. When using new methods, evaluate their advantages and limitations. Identify drugs and chemicals, including generic name, dosage and route(s) of administration. Indicate whether the procedures were approved by the Ethical Committee of Human Experimentation in your country, or in accordance with the Helsinki Declaration of 1975, and later revisions.

Results - Present results in logical sequence in tables and illustrations. In the text, explain, emphasise or summarise the most important observations. Units of measurement should be expressed in accordance with the Système International d'Unités (SI Units).

Discussion - Do not repeat in detail data given in the Results section. Emphasise the new and important aspects of the study. Relate the observations to other relevant studies. On the basis of your findings (and others'), discuss possible implications/conclusions. When stating a new hypothesis, clearly label it as such.

Acknowledgements - Acknowledge only persons who have made substantive contributions to the study. Authors are responsible for obtaining written permission from everyone acknowledged by name because readers may infer their endorsement of the data and conclusions.

Manuscripts on disk - A disk should be supplied together with the hard copies: the format system should be clearly stated. Detailed instructions on manuscript submission on disk can be supplied on request to the publisher, and will automatically be sent to all authors on notification of acceptance of a paper.

Tables - Tables should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals. Type each table on a separate sheet, with titles making them self-explanatory. The editors may recommend that additional tables containing important backup data be deposited with the National Auxiliary Publications Service or other permanent organisations. Such a deposition should be noted in the text.

Illustrations - All figures should clarify the text and their numbers be kept to a minimum. Details must be large enough to retain their clarity after reduction of size. Illustrations should preferably fill single column width (63 mm) after reduction although in exceptional cases 2/3 page width (90 mm) or full page width (130 mm) will be accepted. Submit 2 unmounted copies of each illustration, identifying them with a label on the back which indicates the number, author's name and the top. Line drawings should be professionally drafted and photographed, halftones should exhibit high contrast. A linear size scale should be incorporated into electron microscope pictures. It is the policy of Contact Dermatitis for authors to pay the full cost for the reproduction of their colour artwork. Original transparencies as well as 3 sets of colour prints should be submitted.
Therefore, please note that if there is colour artwork in your manuscript when it is accepted for publication, Blackwell Publishing require you to complete and return a colour work agreement form before your paper can be published. This form can be downloaded as a PDF* from the internet. The web address for the form is:

Legends - Legends should be typed double-spaced in consecutive order on a separate page. They should be brief and specific. If micrographs are used, information about staining methods and magnification should be given.

Abbreviations and symbols - All units will be metric. Only generally accepted standard terms should be used. Units, Symbols and Abbreviations will be the reference source for these. Unfamiliar abbreviations must be defined when first used. For further details concerning preparation of manuscripts see: (1) CBE Style Manual Committee. Scientific style and format: the CBE manual for authors, editors, and publishers. 6th ed. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press; 1994. Use no Roman numerals in the text. In decimal fractions a decimal point, and not a comma, must be used. The minus sign is shown as --.

Nomenclature - Chemical physical, physicochemical, biological, and clinical units should always be strictly defined. Units of measurement are to be expressed in accordance with the Système International d'Unités (SI Units). for guidance see "Policy Statement on the Changeover to Système International (SI) in Contact Dermatitis", copies of which are available from the Editor-in-Chief or the Publisher. If possible, data should be statistically evaluated.

References - Number references consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text. Identify references in text, tables and legends by Arabic numerals (in parentheses). All authors cited, and only these, must be listed at the end of the paper. References should be according to the style used in Index Medicus and International list of periodical title word abbreviations (ISO 833).

Examples:

Proofs - All manuscripts will be carefully revised by the publisher's desk editor. Only in case of extensive corrections will the manuscript be returned to the authors for final approval. Proofs will be sent to authors for correction.

Offprints - Offprints can be obtained by using the offprint order form accompanying the proofs.

Short Communications - Short papers not exceeding half a printed page (approximately 350 words) may be accepted for publication if they serve to promote communication between clinicians and research workers. In contrast to Original Articles, Short Communications will not be sent out for formal external review (though the editor reserves that right). Manuscripts should still be submitted in triplicate. They should start with the title, name(s) and full address(es) of author(s) (no additional address for correspondence is printed), and key words. Style should be concise and references confined to the essential. No proofs or reprints will be provided
