About the journal

Industrial engineering is one of the earliest fields to utilize computers in research, education, and practice. Over the years, computers and electronic communication have become an integral part of industrial engineering.

The journal aims at an audience of researchers, educators and practitioners of industrial engineering and associated fields. It publishes original contributions to the development of new computerized methodologies for solving industrial engineering problems, and applications of these methodologies to problems of interest to the broad industrial engineering and associated communities. It encourages submissions that expand the frontiers of the fundamental theories and concepts underlying industrial engineering techniques. It also serves as a venue for articles evaluating the state of the art of computer applications in various industrial engineering and related topics, and research in the utilization of computers in industrial engineering education. Papers reporting on applications of industrial engineering techniques to real life problems are welcome, as long as they satisfy the criteria of originality in the choice of the problem and the tools utilized to solve it, generality of the approach for applicability to other problems, and significance of the results produced. A major aim of the journal is to foster international exchange of ideas and experiences among scholars and practitioners with shared interests all over the world.

Instructions to Authors

Submission of Papers

The editors of the journal welcome contributions from throughout the world. Manuscripts for publication may be submitted, either to the editor-in-chief, or to an appropriate area or guest editor. The editor-in-chief's address is: Professor Mohamed I. Dessouky, Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, University of Southern California, 3715 McClintock Avenue, Ger 240, Los Angeles, CA, 90089-0193, USA. The e-mail address is caie@usc.edu. A list of the area editors and their addresses appears in the front of journal issues as well as on Decision Sciences Web (http://www.elsevier.com/locate/dsw). The names and addresses of guest editors of special issues are announced in the call for papers of these issues. The language of the Journal is English.

Computer oriented papers may have associated with them certain problems involving communication. Particular attention may therefore be given in the manner of presentation of concepts, procedures, results and validation. In cases where it is not possible to present sufficient detail to facilitate reproduction and checking, complementary papers, dealing with details, may be advisable. References may also be made to supporting reports available to the public or filed with the Editor for reference by readers. Authors are also urged, where possible, to include in the papers flow charts, algorithms, input-output details and examples, with pertinent comparisons and critical evaluations.

Since the journal is blind refereed, authors should not include any reference to themselves, their affiliation or their sponsorships in the body of the paper or on figures and computer outputs. Proper credits and acknowledgement can be given in the final accepted version of the paper.

Submission of a paper implies that it has not been published previously, that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, and that if accepted it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in English or in any other language, without the written consent of the publisher.

Manuscript Preparation

General: Manuscripts must be typewritten, double-spaced with wide margins on one side of white paper. Four good quality printouts with a font size of 12, 11 or 10 pt are required. A cover letter mentioning the paper title, the name(s) and affiliation(s) of the author(s), and the purpose of the submission, should accompany the manuscript. The first page of each copy should include the paper title and the name(s) and affiliation(s) of the author(s). The corresponding author should be identified on this page (include a Fax number and E-mail address where possible). Full postal addresses must be given for all co-authors. The second page should include only the paper title, abstract and keywords (not the name(s) of the author(s)). Authors should consult a recent issue of the journal or Elsevier Decision Sciences Web for style if possible. An electronic copy of the paper should accompany the final version. The Editors reserve the right to adjust style to certain standards of uniformity. Authors should retain a copy of their manuscript since we cannot accept responsibility for damage or loss of papers. Original manuscripts are discarded one month after publication unless the Publisher is asked to return original material after use.

Paper Length: While no maximum length of contributions is prescribed, authors are encouraged to write concisely.

Text: Follow this order when typing manuscripts: Title, Authors, Affiliations, Abstract, Keywords, Main text, Acknowledgements, Appendix, References, Figure Captions and then Tables. Do not import the Figures or Tables into your text. The corresponding author should be identified with an asterisk and footnote. All other footnotes (except for table footnotes) should be identified with superscript Arabic numerals.

. Units and Symbols: Because of the international character of the Journal, no rigid rules concerning notation or abbreviation need be observed by the authors but each paper should be self-consistent as to symbols and units which should all be properly defined. At the same time, adopting commonly used symbols to denote entities and attributes with widely accepted definitions facilitates reading the paper.

Mathematical Symbols: All mathematical symbols should be typewritten. Greek letters and unusual symbols should be identified in the margin. Distinction should be made between capital and lowercase letters, between the letter O and zero, between the letter l and the number one and prime, and between Greek letters and similarly-looking Latin letters. A vector will be printed bold face and to indicate this the letters should be underscored with a single wavy line. The numbers identifying mathematical expressions should be placed in parentheses. Latin letters used as symbols should be italicized.

References: All publications cited in the text should be present in a list of references following the text of the manuscript. In the text refer to the author's name (without initials) and year of publication, e.g. "Since Peterson (1993) has shown that..." or "This is in agreement with results obtained later (Kramer, 1994)". For 2-6 authors, all authors are to be listed at first citation, with "&" separating the last two authors. For more than six authors, use the first six authors followed by et al. In subsequent citations for three or more authors use author et al. in the text. The list of references should be arranged alphabetically by authors' names. The manuscript should be carefully checked to ensure that the spelling of authors' names and dates are exactly the same in the text as in the reference list.
References should be given in the following form:

Illustrations: Illustrations are to be restricted to the minimum necessary. All illustrations should be provided in camera-ready form, suitable for reproduction (which may include reduction) without retouching. Photographs, charts and diagrams are all to be referred to as "Figure(s)" and should be numbered consecutively in the order to which they are referred. They should accompany the manuscript, but should not be included within the text. All illustrations should be clearly marked on the back with the figure number and the author's name. All figures are to have a caption. Captions should be supplied on a separate sheet.
Line drawings: Good quality printouts on white paper produced in black ink are required. All lettering, graph lines and points on graphs should be sufficiently large and bold to permit reproduction when the diagram has been reduced to a size suitable for inclusion in the journal. Dye-line prints or photocopies are not suitable for reproduction. Do not use any type of shading on computer-generated illustrations.
Photographs: Original photographs must be supplied as they are to be reproduced (e.g. black and white). If necessary, a scale should be marked on the photograph. Please note that photocopies of photographs are not acceptable.
Color: No color is published in Computers & Industrial Engineering.

Computer Programs: Computer programs should be given on an original printout and will be reproduced photographically to avoid errors. Glossy prints of the original printout are also acceptable.

Tables: Tables should be numbered consecutively and given a suitable caption and each table typed on a separate sheet. Footnotes to tables should be typed below the table and should be referred to by superscript lowercase letters. No vertical rules should be used. Tables should not duplicate results presented elsewhere in the manuscript, (e.g. in graphs).

Electronic submission

In order to speed up the review process, authors are encouraged to submit their manuscripts in electronic form, possibly through the Internet, but preferably on a computer disk. The electronic copy should match the hardcopy exactly. In order to preserve the anonymity of the authors, a separate file must be created for the first page of the manuscript, which contains the author's (authors') name(s).This file will not be sent to the referees. Authors should submit an electronic copy of their paper with the final version of the manuscripts. Always keep a backup copy of the electronic file for reference and safety.

Proofs

Proofs will be sent to the author (first named author if no corresponding author is identified of multi-authored papers) and should be returned within 48 hours of receipt. Corrections should be restricted to typesetting errors; any others may be charged to the author. Any queries should be answered in full. Please note that authors are urged to check their proofs carefully before return, since the inclusion of late corrections cannot be guaranteed. Proofs are to be returned to the Log-in Department, Elsevier Science Ireland Ltd., Elsevier House, Brookvale Plaza, East Park, Shannon, County Clare, IRELAND.

Offprints

Twenty-five offprints will be supplied free of charge. Additional offprints and copies of the issue can be ordered at a specially reduced rate using the order form sent to the corresponding author after the manuscript has been accepted. Orders for reprints (produced after publication of an article) will incur a 50% surcharge.
