About the journal

Computer Physics Communications (CPC) publishes research papers in computational physics and physical

chemistry, and closely related areas in computational science, computer programs, review articles on selected topics, proceedings of topical conferences in the field, thematic issues, and comments on previous publications in the journal. All contributions are handled by an international board of experts covering all subfields of computational physics and physical chemistry. Computer programs are deposited in the CPC Program Library, and a description is published as an article in the journal.

Articles cover:
 Computational models in Physics and Physical Chemistry;
 Computer programs in Physics and Physical Chemistry;
 Computational models and programs associated with the design, control, and analysis of experiments;
 Numerical methods and algorithms;
 Algebraic computation;
 Impact of advanced computer architecture and special purpose computers on computing in the Physical Sciences;
 Software topics, including programming environments, languages, data bases, expert systems, and graphics packages related to Physical Sciences;
 Analysis of computer systems performance.

A subscription to Computer Physics Communications now also includes access to the full Program Library. Details are available on the CPC Program Library WWW home page at: http://www.cpc.cs.qub.ac.uk/cpc/ and also appeared in the January 1996 issue.

To ensure that your subscribing library has registered access to the CPC Program Library, you are invited to complete the Guest Book at the CPC home page above.

Instructions to Authors

Submission of papers

Manuscripts (three copies, including hardcopies of illustrations in each), accompanied by a covering letter, should be sent to one of the Principal Editors or Editors in Specialist Fields.

Original material. By submitting a paper for publication in Computer Physics Communications the authors imply that the material has not been published previously nor has been submitted for publication elsewhere and that the authors have obtained the necessary authority for publication.

Refereeing. Submitted papers will be refereed and, if necessary, authors may be invited to revise their manuscript. If a submitted paper relies heavily on unpublished material (e.g., a paper in press), it would be helpful to have a copy of that material for the use of the referee.

Types of contributions

Computer Physics Communications publishes several types of papers:

Regular articles. These are research papers in any area of computational physics or computational physical chemistry;
Computer program descriptions of new or revised programs to be placed in the CPC Program Library. These are full papers on new programs or new versions of programs. (A description of the CPC Program Library is available at http://www.cpc.cs.qub.ac.uk)
Features articles. These articles are usually arranged by invitation from the editors, and they provide a review of a body of work in a subfield of computational physics or physical chemistry or an overview of a body of the author?s own work;
New version announcements. These describe new versions of programs but are much shorter than full papers on new versions;
Errata;
Book reviews

Manuscript preparation

All manuscripts should be written in English. The paper copies of the text should be prepared with double line spacing and wide margins, on numbered sheets. Also note details on electronic version of manuscripts.
Structure. Please adhere to the following order of presentation:

Article title
Author(s)
Affiliation(s)
Abstract
PACS codes and keywords
Program summary*
Main text
Acknowledgements
Appendices
References
Test Run Input* and Output*
Figure Captions
Tables

(Items marked with * are only required for program descriptions; see more detailed instructions to Authors)

Corresponding author. The name, complete postal address, telephone and fax numbers and the email address of the corresponding author should be given on the first page of the manuscript.

PACS codes/keywords. Please supply one to four PACS classification codes and 5-8 keywords of your own choice for indexing purposes. A complete list of PACS codes is available at http://www.elsevier.nl/locate/pacs

References. References to other work should be consecutively numbered in the text using square brackets and listed by number in the Reference list. An example is given in the more detailed instructions to Authors).

Illustrations

Illustrations should also be submitted in triplicate: one master set and two sets of copies. The line drawings in the master set should be original laser printer or plotter output or drawn in black india ink, with careful lettering, large enough (3-5mm) to remain legible after reduction for printing. The photographs should be originals, with somewhat more contrast than is required in the printed version. They should be unmounted unless part of a composite figure. Any scale markers should be inserted on the photograph, not drawn below it.

Colour plates. Figures may be published in colour, if this is judged essential by the Editor. The Publisher and the author will each bear part of the extra costs involved. Further information is available from the Publisher.

Also note details on electronic version of manuscripts.

After acceptance

Notification. You will be notified by the Editor of the journal of the acceptance of your article. You will be invited to supply an electronic version of the accepted text, if this is not already available.

Copyright transfer. You will be asked to transfer the copyright of the article to the Publisher. This transfer will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information.

Computer programs. After acceptance of the description of a computer program, you will be asked to send the program file to the CPC Program Library.

Electronic manuscripts and Figures

The Publisher welcomes the receipt of an electronic version of your accepted manuscript (preferably encoded in LaTeX). If you have not already supplied the final, revised version of your article (on diskette) to the Journal Editor, you are requested herewith to send a file with the text of the accepted manuscript directly to the Publisher by email or on diskette (allowed formats 3.5" or 5.25" MS-DOS or 3.5" Macintosh) to the address given below. Please note that no deviations from the version accepted by the Editor of the journal are permissible without prior and explicit approval by the Editor. Such changes should be clearly indicated on an accompanying printout of the file.

The Elsevier LaTeX package (including detailed instructions for LaTeX preparation) may be downloaded from one of the following participating hosts in the Comprehensive TeX Archive Network (CTAN). Select the one in closest network proximity to you:

German Language TeX Users' Group, Heidelberg (Germany)
University of Cambridge Computer Lab (United Kingdom)
Sam Houston State University, Texas (United States)

Alternatively use anonymous FTP to one of the following sites
ftp.dante.de
ftp.tex.ac.uk
ftp.shsu.edu
and obtain the files from the directory /tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/supported/elsevier

For a list of sites maintaining a (partial) mirror of the CTAN archive see German Language TeX Users' Group, Heidelberg (Germany), University of Cambridge Computer Lab (United Kingdom) or Sam Houston State University, Texas (United States).

Alternatively, if you wish to obtain a copy of the CTAN via CD-ROM see German Language TeX Users' Group, Heidelberg (Germany), University of Cambridge Computer Lab (United Kingdom) or Sam Houston State University, Texas (United States) for details.

The Elsevier package consists of the following files:
- ascii.tab (ASCII table)
- elsart.cls (use this file if you are using LaTeX2e, the current version of LaTeX)
- elsart.sty and elsart12.sty (use these two files if you are using LaTeX2.09, the previous version of LaTeX)
- instraut.dvi and/or instraut.ps (instruction booklet)
- readme

Questions concerning the LaTeX author-prepared article project and requests for the booklet with instructions to authors should be directed to the address below.

If sent via electronic mail, files should be accompanied by a clear identification of the article (name of journal, editor's reference number) in the "subject field" of the electronic mail message. An ASCII table (available from the publisher) should be included in the files, to enable any transmission errors to be detected.

Submission of Electronic figures is encouraged. Detailed guidelines on how to prepare your artwork for electronic submission including common problems, suggestions on how to ensure the best results and guidelines for popular applications can be obtained from the Elsevier electronic artwork site.
