About the journal

This bimonthly journal is founded in response to a recent surge in the number of researchers in the field of composite interfaces. It is now recognized that one of the most important aspects of composite materials is the understanding of interface and interphase structures. While traditional trial-and-error approaches have advanced composite technology in the past, stricter property requirements now demand complex and systematic design of composite materials. Issues contain articles of high scientific standard and emphasize fundamental understanding of interface-related phenomena.

Composite Interfaces provides a forum for interdisciplinary scientific and engineering research on composite interfaces/interphases and their related phenomena. It presents new concepts and approaches for composite interface study. The journal balances interest in chemistry, physical properties, mechanical properties, molecular structures, characterization techniques and theories.

Composite Interfaces covers a wide range of topics including --- but not restricted to --- surface treatment of reinforcing fibers and fillers; effect of interface structure on mechanical properties, physical properties, curing and rheology; coupling agents; synthesis of matrices designed to promote adhesion; molecular and atomic characterization of interfaces; interfacial morphology; dynamic mechanical study of interphases; interfacial compatibilization; adsorption; tribology.

The journal publishes articles encompassing composites with organic and inorganic materials and includes composites applied to aerospace, automotive appliances, electronics, construction, marine, optical and biomedical fields. Although blends, coatings and adhesives are not traditionally called composites, they are an important part of the journal since their interfacial structures and properties have great similarities to composite interfaces.

Instructions to Authors
Submission
Manuscripts should be submitted in triplicate to the Editor-in-Chief. All contributions will be evaluated by at least two independent referees. Papers should be original and must not have been submitted simultaneously to any other journal. Authors are solely responsible for the factual accuracy of their papers. It is the responsibility of the principal author to secure requisite permission from his or her employer and all papers submitted are understood to have received due clearance(s) for publication.

Preparation
Manuscripts should be typed in English, double spaced and single sided on A4 sheets (8.5 x 11'), and should be numbered beginning with the title page. The first page of an article should contain only (1) the title of the paper, the name(s) and address(es) of the author(s), (2) a short title not exceeding 45 letters and spaces, (3) the name and address of the author to whom correspondence and proofs should be sent. If possible, an electronic-mail address or telex or fax number should also be provided. An abstract of 50--250 words and 4--8 key words should follow the title page on a separate sheet.

Headings and subheadings for different sections of the paper (e.g. Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion) should be clearly indicated. Detailed mathematical discussion should be placed in an appendix. Units of measurement, abbreviations and symbols should follow the international system of units (SI). Equations and formulas should be typewritten wherever possible. Equations should be numbered consecutively with arabic numerals in parentheses on the right-hand side of the page. Special symbols should be identified in the margin.

Tables and figures
Tables should be given short informative titles and should be numbered consecutively in arabic numerals. Tables may be reproduced by photo-offset, i.e. directly from the typed manuscript. Figures in a form suitable for reproduction should be submitted separately from the text as original drawings in Indian ink, or as high contrast, sharp unmounted photographs on glossy paper. Lettering on figures should be proportional to the size of the figure to ensure legibility after reduction. On the back of each figure should be indicated lightly in soft pencil: (1) the top of the figure by an arrow, (2) the author and figure number. All figures and tables should be cited consecutively in the text and a list of short captions should be provided at the end of the paper.

References
The references should be cited in the text in a sequential manner, indicated by numbers in square brackets. References should be listed at the end of the paper in the reference section in numerical order.

References to journals should give in this order: Initial(s) and last name(s) of author(s), standard abbreviated title of periodical (according to the system co-sponsored by the American Chemical Society and listed in Bibliographical Guide for Editors and Authors), volume number, first relevant page, year of publication in parentheses, e.g.:

D.J. Blundell and B.N. Osborn, Polymer, 24, 953 (1983)

References to a paper or chapter in a book, an authored/edited book should be listed in the following style respectively:

F.H.J. Maurer, in ``Controlled Interphases in Composite Materials', H. Ishida, Ed., Elsevier Science, New York (1990) p. 491

B.D. Agarwal and L.J. Broutman, ``Analysis and Performances of Fiber Composites', John Wiley and Sons, New York (1980) pp. 185--232

References to patents should be listed as follows:

A.Y. Coran and R. Patel, U.S. Pat. 4,323,625 (1982)

If a publication is in press the reference should be made as complete as possible, e.g. stating the name of the journal and adding ``in press'.

Proofs
Proofs will be sent to the nominated author to check typesetting accuracy. Alterations to the original manuscript at this stage will result in considerable delay in publication and, therefore, are not accepted unless charged to the author. Proofs should be returned within two days of receipt.

Reprints
Twenty-five reprints will be supplied free of charge with each article. Additional reprints may be ordered at prices shown on the reprint order form, which will be sent to the author together with the proofs.

There is no page charge.

Short communications should be presented in the same style as a full paper.

Word-processor disks
The publisher's production department can use your word-processor disks. If available, please send a copy of the disk with your final revised manuscript (together with two copies of the printout). This gives a substantial decrease in typesetting time and ensures that there are no re-keying errors in the article. Moreover, using word-processor disks helps us to shorten publication times. If you provide a disk, please follow these instructions:

1. Label the disk with the author's name; the word processor/computer used (e.g., IBM-PC, Macintosh); the name of the program (e.g., WordPerfect, TEX, MS-Word). If you have an editor's manuscript number, include it in the label.; 2. Send the manuscript as three files; if possible keep the text, figure legends, and tables in separate files. File names must clearly indicate the content of each file; 3. Send separate disks if you submit more than one article at the time; 4. A hard copy printout of the manuscript that exactly matches the disk files must be supplied. Special characters and symbols which are not included in the printer used, should be left as blank spaces in the files and these should be correctly written in the printout in red; 5. Do not use footnotes; 6. Do not justify the right-hand margin.
