Instructions to Authors

Submission. All manuscripts originating in the Americas and Japan should be sent to: Professor James F. Driscoll, Department of Aerospace Engineering, 3004 FXB Building, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI 48109-2140, U.S.A.; Email: jamesfd@umich.edu those originating elsewhere should be sent to A.N. Hayhurst, Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Cambridge, Pembroke Street, Cambridge CB2 3RA, England; Email: cnf@cheng.cam.ac.uk

If a paper is not submitted electronically, five (5) copies of the manuscript (including figures) on paper are required. Original figures should be retained until the conclusion of the review process.

Each manuscript, whether submitted electronically or otherwise, must be accompanied by a signed statement that its content is unpublished material, which is not being submitted for publication elsewhere. Each manuscript should be accompanied by a copy of each article by the author(s) cited in the work as "in press".

Length. There is no restriction on the length of full-length articles; however, succinct writing is encouraged and undue length may be a cause for rejection. A Brief Communication, Comment or Reply should not exceed 1500 words, including tables and figures, each equivalent to 200 words.

LaTeX. Authors preparing manuscripts in LaTeX format must strictly adhere to the Elstart template (for numbered references) provided at: http://www.elsevier.com/locate/latex. The LaTeX file should be saved onto disk as one file (not in multiple parts). Please do not insert additional macros or graphics into the LaTeX file. All graphics should be saved individually on a separate disk to the LaTeX file.

Style. Full-length articles should be organized as follows: Title Page, Abstract, Keywords, Nomenclature (if used), Introduction, Main Body, Conclusions, Acknowledgements, References, Appendices, Tables, List of Captions for the Figures and the Figures. Brief Communications have a similar organization but they do not have an abstract and they generally do not have a separate Conclusions section because their scope is limited.

Format. Manuscripts must be in English and typed single sided and double-spaced on 210 x 297 mm (A4) or 215 x 280 mm (8.5 x 11 inch) white paper with ample margins. The title page, tables and list of captions for the figures should be typed as a separate page.

Title Page. The title page should include title, author(s), affiliation(s), the type of article (full-length, Brief Communication, etc.), and the complete address of the corresponding author (address, telephone number, fax number, and e-mail address). If the title is long, a shortened running title having no more than 45 characters and spaces should be provided.

Abstract. A one-paragraph abstract of 100-300 words should be submitted with full-length articles.

Nomenclature. If symbols are used extensively, a nomenclature list arranged alphabetically, with subscript and superscript symbols listed separately, should be provided. Otherwise all symbols should be identified when first used in the text.

Abbreviations. Abbreviations of chemical compounds or all acronyms should be written in full at their first mention with the abbreviation in parentheses.

Units. Authors are expected to use the SI system of units.

Uncertainties. A quantitative statement of experimental uncertainties should be provided in all manuscripts reporting new experimental results. A systematic assessment of numerical errors should be provided in all manuscripts containing numerical solutions.

Mathematics. Typewritten letters, numbers, and symbols should be used for mathematical material wherever possible. Use fraction exponents instead of root signs. Use the solidus (/) for simple fractions.

Numbers identifying mathematical expressions should be enclosed in parentheses and should be numbered consecutively beginning with "1" in the text. Refer to equations in the text as "Eq. 1," etc., or "Equation 1," etc., at the beginning of a sentence.

Footnotes. Footnotes to the text should be used only when absolutely essential; they should be indicated by superior arabic numerals, numbered consecutively throughout the manuscript.

References. References should be indicated in the text by full-size numbers in brackets, e.g., [1] and should be numbered in the order cited. The numbered reference list at the end of the article should conform to the following style:

Journals: J.C. Rolon, F. Aguerre, S. Candel, Combust. Flame 100 (3) (1995) 422-429.

Books: P. Prasad, Propagation of a Curved Shock and Nonlinear Ray Theory, Longman Scientific & Technical, Harlow, U.K., 1993, p. 105.

Edited Book: R.A. Yetter, F.L. Dryer, D.M Golden, in: M.Y. Hussaini, A. Kumar, F.G. Voigt (Eds.), Major Research Topics in Combustion, Springer-Verlag, New York, 1992, p. 309.

Symposium Proceedings: F.A. Williams, Sixteenth Symposium (International) on Combustion, The Combustion Institute, Pittsburgh, 1976, p. 1281.

NB: From the 2000 Proceedings of the Combustion Institute (Volume 28) onwards all symposium papers should be cited in the following way:

L.V. Moskaleva, M.C. Lin, Proc. Combust. Inst. 28 (2000) 2393 - 2401.

Conference Proceedings: A conference proceedings should be styled as a book, with publisher or institution sponsoring publication and the year published as well as the year the conference was held.

Internal Reports: A.S. Johnson, F.W. Adams, Use of Laser Diagnostics in Supersonic Flows, Report No. SAND87-8003, Sandia National Laboratories, 1987. Authors must ensure that these references are publicly available.

Tables. Tables should be numbered consecutively with arabic numerals. Footnotes to tables should be indicated by superior letters, beginning with "a".

Illustrations. Hard copies of line drawings should be good contrast black on white reproductions. All figures will be reduced to single-column width (approx. 70 mm), unless authorized by the editor to be larger. Lettering and data points should be large enough to be legible after the figure has been reduced to a width of 70 mm. Figures not meeting these requirements will be returned to the author(s) for revision, which may delay the publication of the article.

Multi Media Components. Elsevier is now able to accept electronic supplementary material to support and enhance your scientific research. Supplementary files supplied will be subject to peer review and if accepted will be published online alongside the electronic version of your article on ScienceDirect http://www.sciencedirect.com. For further details on acceptable file types (preferred, and supported) visit: http://authors.elsevier.com/artwork

Photographs should be used sparingly and original(s) should be glossy prints. All original photos MUST be supplied. Essential colour figures may be included but at the discretion of the Editors or at extra expense to the author(s); contact the Production Editor for details: yakec@cadmus.com

Each figure should have a caption and a list of all these captions should be typed on a separate page, which precedes the figures at the end of the manuscript. The figure number and author(s) name should be written in the margin or on the back of each figure. Figures should be numbered consecutively, beginning with "1," in the text. Refer to figures in the text as "Fig. 1," etc., or "Figure 1," etc., at the beginning of a sentence. The preferred formats for figures are TIFF or EPS files. Upon acceptance the figures should be submitted on a separate disk or CD-ROM from the manuscript. For assistance on how to prepare artwork for electronic submission visit: http://authors.elsevier.com.

Computer Disks. When a paper is accepted, authors should submit a fully labelled computer disk or CD-ROM to the Editor. Please observe the following procedure. When first submitting your paper for acceptance and review send it either electronically or as a hard copy (see above). When your paper has been refereed, revised if necessary, and accepted, send a disk or CD-ROM containing the final version with the final hard copy. Make certain that the disk or CD-ROM and hard copy match exactly (otherwise the hardcopy version will prevail). Specify what computer (IBM compatible PC, Apple Macintosh, etc.) and software (MS Word, Wordperfect, etc) was used. The article file should include all textual material (text, references, tables, figure captions, etc.) and separate illustration files, if available. The figures should be submitted on a separate disk or CD-ROM from the manuscript and clearly labelled. The file should follow the general instructions on style/arrangement and, in particular, the reference style of this journal. The file should be double spaced and should use the wrap-around, end-of-line feature, ie., returns at the end of paragraphs only. Place two returns after every element, such as title, headings, paragraphs, figure and table call outs, be sure to keep back-up disks or CD-ROMs for reference and safety.

Copyright. Upon acceptance, the author(s) will be asked to transfer the copyright of the article to The Combustion Institute.

Reprints. The authors will receive 50 free reprints. Additional reprints can be ordered using a form sent to the corresponding author from the Publisher.

Author Enquiries. Authors can keep track of the progress of their accepted article, and set up email alerts informing them of changes to the status of their article, by using the "Track a Paper" feature of Elsevier's Author Gateway http://authors.elsevier.com.

For enquiries relating to the preparation of electronic artwork also consult: http://authors.elsevier.com

Contact details for questions arising after acceptance of an article, especially those relating to proofs, are provided when an article is accepted for publication.
