About the journal

Clinical Transplantation is primarily designed as a channel of communication for all those involved in the care of people who require or have had organ or tissue transplants, including: kidney, intestine, liver, pancreas, heart, heart valves, lung, bone marrow, cornea, skin, bone, and cartilage, viable or stored. Interest is focused not only on the complete spectrum of present transplant operations, but also those that are experimental or may become possible in future. Original articles are welcomed on all clinical and surgical aspects including: indications for and techniques of surgery; immunology and immunosuppression; patient preparation, social, ethical and psychological issues; complications, short- and long-term results; artificial organs and the preservation and storage of organ and tissue. Full-length papers and short communications are invited. Occasional clinical reviews are published, as well as seminal papers in basic science which might lead to immediate clinical application. Prominence is regularly given to the results of cooperative surveys conducted by the organ and tissue transplant registries. The journal is essential reading for surgeons of all major and subspecialities; clinical immunologists; cryobiologists; hematologists; gastroenterologists; pulmonologists; nephrologists; cardiologists; and endocrinologists. It will also be of interest to sociologists, psychologists and research workers; in fact, to all whose combined efforts will improve the prognosis of future transplant recipients.

Manuscripts
The following rules are in agreement with Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals accepted by the International Steering Committee (see 1 below). Authors submitting a paper do so on the understanding that the work has not been published before, is not being considered for publication elsewhere, and has been read and approved by all authors. The submission of the manuscript by the authors means that the authors automatically agree to assign exclusive copyright to Munksgaard International Publishers if and when the manuscript is accepted for publication.

The work shall not be published elsewhere in any language without the written consent of the publisher. The articles published in this journal are protected by copyright, which covers translation rights and the exclusive right to reproduce and distribute all of the articles printed in the journal. No material published in the journal may be stored on microfilm or videocassettes or in electronic databases and the like or reproduced photographically without the prior written permission of the publisher.

The paper should be submitted in English. Type the manuscript (and legends, references, etc.) with wide margins and double spaced. Begin each manuscript component (title page, etc.) on separate pages. To facilitate the handling of manuscript, texts should be submitted, whenever possible, in machine-readable form and accompanied by a diskette. The software used, the program version number, as well as the format of the diskette, should be clearly marked.

Title Page
Should contain (1) a concise informative title; (2) author(s)' names; (3) name of department(s)/institution(s) to which the work is attributed; (4) if the title exceeds 40 characters (letters and spaces): a running head of no more than 40 characters should be provided.

Abstract Page
A separate abstract page should contain the following: (1) Authors' surnames and initials. (2) Title of manuscript. (3) Title of Journal, abbreviated as in reference list. (4) The word Abstract followed by a summary of the article. (5) Key words according to Index Medicus. (6) Name and address of the author to whom requests for offprints should be sent.

Introduction
Present the background briefly, but do not review the subject extensively. Give only pertinent references. State the specific questions you want to answer.

Patients and Methods/Material and Methods
Describe selection of patients or experimental animals, including controls. Do not use patients' names or hospital numbers. Identify methods, apparatus (manufacturer's name and address), and procedures in sufficient detail to allow other workers to reproduce the results. Provide references and brief descriptions of methods that have been published. When using new methods, evaluate their advantages and limitations. Identify drugs and chemicals, including generic name, dosage, and route(s) of administration.

Indicate whether the procedures were approved by the Ethics Committee of Human Experimentation in your country, or are in accordance with the Helsinki Declaration of 1975.

Results
Present results in logical sequence in tables and illustrations. In the text, explain, emphasize or summarize the most important observations. Units of measurement should be expressed in accordance with Système International d'Unités (SI Units).

Discussion
Do not repeat in detail data given in the Results section. Emphasize the new and important aspects of the study. Relate the observations to other relevant studies. On the basis of your findings (and others'), discuss possible implications/conclusions. When stating a new hypothesis, clearly label it as such.

Tables
Tables should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals. Type each table on a separate sheet, with titles making them self-explanatory.

Illustrations
Figures should clarify the text. Their number should be kept to a minimum. Submit 3 unmounted copies of each illustration, labelled on the back with the number, author's name, and indicate the top of the figure. Figure legends must be typed on a separate page at the end of the manuscript.

Figures should be professionally drafted, and halftones should exhibit high contrast. Details must be large enough to retain their clarity after reduction in size. Where possible, authors should send digital versions of each figure saved as a separate file in TIFF or EPS format. Photomicrographs must have internal scale markers (linear scale). Any colour illustrations must be paid for by the author. Authors must complete a colour work agreement form for any manuscript containing colour figures and fax it to the production editor on +44 (0)131 226 3803 as soon as the manuscript has been accepted.

Abbreviations and Symbols
Use only standard abbreviations. All units will be metric. Use no roman numerals in the text. In decimals, a decimal point, and not a comma, will be used. Avoid abbreviations in the title. The full term for which an abbreviation stands should precede its first use in the text unless it is a standard unit of measurement. In cases of doubt, the spelling orthodoxy of The Oxford English Dictionary will be adhered to.

References
These should be kept to the pertinent minimum and numbered consecutively in the order in which they appear in the text. Identify references in text, tables, and legends by Arabic numerals (in parentheses). Reference cited only in the tables or figure legends should be numbered in accordance with a sequence established by the first identification of that figure or table in the text. Try to avoid using abstracts as references. Include manuscripts accepted, but not published; designate the abbreviated title of the journal followed by (in press). Information from manuscripts not yet accepted should be cited in the text as (submitted). The references must be verified by the author(s) against the original documents. Titles should be abbreviated in accordance with the style used in Index Medicus.
