About the journal

To order this journal online, visit http://www.elsevierhealth.com/journals/clnu/
The official journal of the European Society of Parenteral & Enteral Nutrition Clinical Nutrition is an International journal providing essential scientific information on nutritional and metabolic care and the relationship between nutrition and disease both in the setting of basic science and clinical practice. Published bi-monthly, each issue combines original articles, reviews and educational papers providing an invaluable reference for any specialist concerned with these fields.

The journal publishes regular supplements. In 1999 these included the Abstracts of the annual ESPEN Congress, and a joint publication of ESPEN and the British Association of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition supplement - Benefits of Nutritional Support in Hospitals and the Community.

The journal publishes original articles and review papers on those areas in acute disease which have metabolic and nutritional implications, and on those features of the metabolic responses to starvation, injury and sepsis which have relevance to nutritional management and nutritional pharmacology. It also publishes scientific work related to the development of new techniques and their application to the metabolic care of the patient.

Clinical Nutrition aims to publish relevant scientific advances in the pathogenesis, diagnosis and management of nutritional and metabolic disorders both in acute and chronic diseases. Each issue combines basic and clinical research in a balanced fashion.

Photographs, photomicrographs, electron micrographs, roentgenograms, and drawings should be submitted as black-and-white high-quality glossy prints. On the back of each figure, lightly write in pencil the figure number (in Arabic numerals), an indication of the top edge, and the last name of the senior author. Drawings should be professionally drawn. While output from a laser printer is acceptable, output from a plotter or typewriter lettering is not acceptable.

Submit only one set of glossy prints, and attach full-page photocopies of the figures to each copy of the manuscript.

Figure legends

Legends should be typed double-spaced in consecutive order on a separate sheet. They should be brief and provide enough information to permit interpretation of figures without reference to text.

Tables

Tables should be typed double-spaced, each on a separate sheet, and contain only horizontal rules. The tables should be numbered in Arabic numerals and contain a brief specific title. Data presented in tables must be logically and clearly organized; they should be self-explanatory and should supplement, not duplicate the text.

Acknowledgements

Acknowledgements to individuals or institutions, including grants and sources of funding, should be listed in the Acknowledgements section at the end of the text just before the list of references.

Units & Abbreviations

Body of the Paper

Headings should be appropriate to the nature of the paper and enhance readability. Usually, only two categories of heading should be used. Abbreviations may be used when the term is used at least three times in the text, but the full term for which an abbreviation stands should precede its first use unless it is a standard unit of measurement. Abbreviations used only in a table or figure may be defined in the legend. Identify drugs and chemicals used by generic name (if trademarks are mentioned, manufacturer name and city should be given). The metric system should be used for all measurements (weight, length, etc.). Temperatures should be expressed as Celsius (centigrade). Metric abbreviations should be expressed in lower case without periods and with no distinction between singular and plural. Both SI and traditional units may be used.

Disk/Electronic Submission

Submission of the final version of articles in electronic form, along with the traditional paper version, is encouraged. Please see the guidelines for submission of manuscripts on disk, published along with these instructions in every issue of the journal.

Copyright Information

In order to ensure maximum dissemination and copyright protection of material published, all submissions must include a copyright transfer agreement (CTA) signed by the senior author. Contributors may use photocopies of the CTA form which is published in every issue of Clinical Nutrition. No paper will be published without the corresponding CTA.

Permissions Information

If a figure or table has previously appeared in copyright material, the author must obtain written permission from the copyright holder (usually the publisher of the original work) to reprint it. Full credit to the original publication must be included in the legend of the figure or footnote to the table. Enclose all letters granting permission at the time of submission of the manuscript.

The author is responsible for payment of applicable fees for reprinting previously published material.

The use of identifiable patient photographs requires written release from the patient (or guardian) to do so. Obtaining this release is the author's responsibility, and a copy of such must accompany the manuscript at the time of submission. In cases where consent has not been obtained and recognizable features may appear, it will be necessary to retouch the illustration to mast out the eyes or otherwise render the individual 'officially unrecognizable'.

Proofs

The correspondence author will be supplied with page proofs to check accuracy of printing. Authors may be charged for any alterations to the proofs beyond those needed to correct typesetting errors. Proofs must be checked carefully and returned by e-mail, fax or post to the issue manager at Elsevier Science Ltd within 48 h or receipt.

Offprints

Twenty-five free offprints are supplied to the correspondence author. An offprint order form will be sent to the author with the proofs.
