About the journal

This authoritative journal provides up-to-date information on nuclear medicine that can be readily applied to clinical situations. Written for both generalists and specialists in nuclear medicine, Clinical Nuclear Medicine ensures timely dissemination of data on current developments that affect all aspects of the specialty. The most practice-oriented journal in the field of nuclear imaging, its numerous illustrations show physicians how to apply vital information immediately in their everyday practice.

Instructions to Authors

I. Original Manuscripts
Papers submitted for publication should be typewritten double-spaced, with the original and one copy. Illustrations should also be submitted in duplicate. The manuscript should consist of the following: (1) title page, (2) abstract, (3) full text, (4) references, (5) legends for illustrations and (6) illustrations.

The pages should be numbered consecutively, starting with the title page as page number one. It is expected that authors have performed a literature search by using sources such as Medline, the Index Medicus, or the RSNA Index to Imaging Literature. Care should be taken to make sure that manuscripts submitted from non-English speaking countries are written in vernacular English. For those authors whose native language is not English, assistance from a translation service may be necessary.

Title Page: Include title, authors and their affiliations, institution where work was performed, name and address to which reprint requests should be sent, abbreviated title, and name, address, telephone and fax numbers, and electronic mail address of the corresponding author.

Abstract: There should be a structured abstract of no more than 250 words. The abstract should include the Purpose of the Report; Materials and Methods; Results; and Conclusions, divided into four separate paragraphs. Abbreviations of isotopes and radiopharmaceuticals should be used. Three to six Key Words for indexing purposes should appear after the abstract.

Text: References should be cited with parentheses in numerical order as they appear. Only those references that are considered essential should be included. A summary may be included at the discretion of the author. Footnotes should be limited and should be typed at the bottom of the appropriate page. Isotopes: When abbreviating isotopes, designate them in the following manner instead of using superscripts: I-125, In-113m, Tc-99m. Radiopharmaceuticals:Radiopharmaceuticals should be listed with the isotope first followed by the chemical form. Abbreviations of isotopes are preferred but not required (Tc-99m sodium pertechnetate or technetium-99m sodium pertechnetate; I-131 human serum albumin or iodine-131 human serum albumin). Abbreviating radiopharmaceuticals: In using abbreviations to shorten the lengthy name of a radiopharmaceutical, the full name should be spelled out completely the first time it is mentioned, followed by the abbreviation in parentheses (Tc-99m diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA); thereafter Tc-99m DTPA). Thereafter abbreviations may be used. In the abstract, abbreviations may be used throughout without explanation. Radiopharmaceutical doses: When becquerels are used, the quantity of radioactivity should be given in both curie (Ci) and becquerel (Bq) designations.

Illustrations: An adhesive information label should be placed on the back of each illustration. Information on the label should include the figure number, name of the first author, the first 3 words of the title of the article, and an arrow designating the top. This material may be typed or printed on the label. The illustrations should be placed in envelopes labeled with the first author's name and title of the article and designated as set 1 and set 2. Under no circumstances should there be writing, printing, or markings of any kind on the backs of illustrations. Paper clips should not be used for attaching illustrations and artwork should not be pasted to manuscript pages. Photographs should not contain distracting smudges, markings, writing, or hand lettering. Scintillation Camera Images: Images obtained with a scintillation camera should not be enlarged. Those obtained on transparent film should be submitted as glossy prints preferably with the image the same size as that initially obtained. If images were obtained on Polaroid prints, submission of the original is preferred. All other illustrations (X-rays, diagrams, etc.): These should be submitted as glossy prints. Lettering, arrows, diagrams, etc.: These should be of professional quality. Hand lettering and drawings and typewritten lettering are usually not of sufficient quality for publication. Color illustrations: Cost of processing is the responsibility of the author. Digital figures: Electronic art should be submitted as either a TIFF (tagged image file format) or an EPS (encapsulated postscript) file. Line art must have a resolution of at least 1200 dpi (dots per inch), and electronic photographs - radiographs, CT scans, and so on - and scanned images must have a resolution of at least 300 dpi. If fonts are used in the artwork, they must be converted to paths or outlines or they must be embedded in the files. Color images must be saved and submitted as CMYK files. All electronic art must be accompanied by high-resolution laser prints of the images. Files can be submitted on a 3?inch high-density disk, a CD-ROM, or an Iomega Zip disk. Please note that artwork generated from office suite programs such as Power Point, Corel Draw, and MS Word and artwork downloaded from the Internet (JPEG or GIFF files) cannot be used.

References: These should be double spaced in numerical order (not alphabetically by author), and should conform to the following style:

II. Interesting Images

One of the regular departments of Clinical Nuclear Medicine is a section devoted to interesting images. No manuscript text is required. Simply send an unstructured abstract, of not more than 100 words, and appropriate images and accompanying legends of explanation along with a title page and references, if any are pertinent. Reference citations should appear in the legends, and not in the abstract. Three to six Key Words for indexing purposes should appear after the abstract. The number of images is left to the discretion of the author. Since there is no manuscript text, the legends for illustrations should contain sufficient details for explanation. Instructions for the (1) title page, (2) illustrations, (3) legends for illustrations and (4) references are the same as those described in the section of Original Manuscripts. Contributions should be submitted in duplicate.

III. Atlas Articles

One of the frequently appearing features in Clinical Nuclear Medicine is The Nuclear Medicine Atlas. The objective of this department of the journal is to present, in considerable detail, the imaging characteristics of a particular lesion, entity, or subject. The length of the article is left to the discretion of the contributor and may be as long as ten printed pages, including images, if necessary. Contributions should be prepared in the same manner as that described for Original Manuscripts.
