About the journal

The journal achieves an excellent balance between clinical and scientific articles and has regular reviews and editorials written by leading authorities in their field. The editors will consider short "hot topic" papers for fast-tracking. In response to the increasing number of quality submissions, since 1996 the journals size has increased by over 30%. Clinical and Experimental Allergy is essential reading for allergy practitioners and research scientists with an interest in allergic diseases and mechanisms. Truly international in appeal, Clinical and Experimental Allergy publishes clinical and experimental observations in disease in all fields of medicine in which allergic hypersensitivity plays a part.

Instructions to Authors

The journal will accept for publication suitable manuscripts dealing with the aetiology, diagnosis and treatment of allergic (and related) diseases. These might include the study of methods of controlling allergic reactions, human and animal models of hypersensitivity and other aspects of basic and applied clinical allergy in its broadest sense. We encourage single-case reports provided they focus on a topic of extreme contemporary interest. Papers reporting the results of drug trials will be considered but only if they shed light on pathogenetic mechanisms or present the results of entirely novel pharmacological agents.

The Journal also publishes solicited and unsolicited review articles on subjects of topical interest to experimental and clinical allergists. It does not in general publish papers of a primarily methodological nature. Papers will be accepted for publication provided they meet these requirements and provided they have not been and will not be published elsewhere, in whole or in part. Papers accepted become copyright of the Journal. Manuscripts

Manuscripts should be sent to:

Professor A.B. Kay
Department of Allergy and Clinical Immunology
Imperial College London
National Heart & Lung Institute
Dovehouse Street
London, SW3 6LY
UK

Contributors must send three complete copies of the text, tables and figures, and it is essential that they retain one copy of their original manuscript as the Editor does not accept responsibility for damage or loss of papers submitted. Papers are accepted on the understanding that no substantial part has been, or will be, published elsewhere and once they have been accepted they remain the copyright of the Journal. A completed copyright assignment form must be included with the submitted manuscript.

A cover letter must accompany each manuscript. It should identify the corresponding author and state that the material is original and has not been submitted for publication elsewhere. A statement signed by all authors, indicating that they have contributed significantly to the research and preparation, revision and final production of the manuscript and approve its submission, must be included.

Under normal circumstances articles which would exceed ten printed pages will not be accepted for publication (approximately 5000 words, three tables and three figures or the equivalent thereof). Longer articles may be accepted at the discretion of the Editor.

Manuscripts should be typewritten (double spacing) on one side of the paper only with 30 mm margins all round and, on a separate sheet, should bear the title of the paper, name, postal address and fax number of the author, together with the name of the Institution where the work was done.

Generally, papers should be divided into the following parts and in the order indicated: (1) Abstract: this must be no longer than 300 words and should summarize the results and conclusions concisely. Acronyms, references and tabular data should not be included. The abstract should be organized as follows: Background: Why was the study performed? Objective: What is the purpose of the study? Methods: What were the principal methods used? Results: What are the major findings? Conclusion: What is the single most important conclusion?

A list of up to 10 keywords should appear in a paragraph following the abstract; (2) Introduction: containing the reasons for doing the work; (3) Materials and methods: sufficient information must be included to permit repetition of experimental work; (4) Results: these should be given concisely; the use of tables and figures to illustrate the same results will only rarely be allowed; (5) Discussion: the presentation of results should be separated from a discussion of their significance; this section should not repeat results; (6) Acknowledgements (including financial support); (7) References (see below). Units and Abbreviations

The Journal recognizes the adoption of the Syst¨¦me International dUnit¨¦s (SI Units) proposed in Units, Symbols and Abbreviations (1972) published by the Royal Society of Medicine, 1 Wimpole Street, London WIM 8AE. Abbreviations included in the list published in each volume of the Journal need not be written in full. Other abbreviations should only be used for unwieldy names, and only when they occur frequently.

References in the manuscript text should appear as numbers in square brackets or they may follow authors names in the text if necessary. The reference list should show the references in numerical and not in alphabetical order. The full title of the paper should be given with first and last page numbers. The journal should be abbreviated according to the system adopted by Index Medicus.

For example:

Colon AR, Ledesma BS, Pardo V, Sandberg DH. Viral potentiation of chemical toxins in the experimental syndrome of hypoglycemia, encephalopathy, and visceral fatty degeneration. Am J Dig Dis 1974; 19:1091-101.

When the quotation is from a book the following format should be used, giving the relevant page or chapter number:

Antia FP. Clinical dietetics and nutrition. 2nd Edn. London: Oxford University Press, 1973.

Weinstein L, Swartz MN. Pathogenic properties of invading microorganisms. In: Sodeman WA Jr, Sodeman WA, eds. Pathologic physiology: mechanisms of disease. Philadelphia: WB Saunders, 1974: 457-72.

Work which has not been accepted for publication and personal communications should not appear in the reference list. Work which has been accepted for publication should be included in the reference list stating the journal in which it is to appear. Suggestions for Reviewers

To expedite the review process, the editors request that authors provide the names, addresses, telephone and fax numbers, and e-mail address (if known) of up to three potential reviewers. These individuals should not be recent collaborators or co-authors, nor should they have provided substantial advice or critiques to the authors in the conduct of their work. The editors will take these suggestions into account when assigning reviewers. Illustrations

These should be labelled with the figure number and authors name in soft pencil on the back and the top edge identified. Photographs should be glossy bromide prints of good contrast, suitable for reproduction by lithography. Masking instructions or lettering, arrows, etc., can be indicated on an overlay.

Three copies of all figures must be submitted with lettering and shading. Figures should be numbered (Arabic numerals) seriatim and legends must be typed on a separate sheet.

Please send us digital versions of your figures. Ideally, these should be sent in native format of WMF if created in Windows. Files saves as PS, EPS, GIF and TIF may also be used, but please note that it may not be possible to modify them. Avoid using tints if possible; if they are essential to the understanding of the figure, try to make them coarse.

Tables should be typed on separate sheets and should be given Arabic numerals. Units should appear in parentheses in the column headings but not in the body of the table. Words or numerals should be repeated on successive lines; ditto should not be used. Submission of Disks

To speed publication and reduce errors in typesetting authors should submit a disk of the final version of their accepted paper. The final version of the hard copy and the file on disk must be the same. Note the software used, the type of computer, and tany special (non-keyboard) characters used. Always enclose a hard copy of figures and tables. Disks should not be submitted until authors have been informed of acceptance. Offprints

Twenty-five offprints of each paper are supplied free, but additional copies may be purchased if ordered on the printed sheet, which will be sent to the author with the proofs. Page Proofs

Page proofs will be submitted to the contributors for minor corrections and should be returned to the Editor within 3 days. Major alterations from the text cannot be accepted.
