Instructions to Authors

Submission of Papers

Authors are requested to submit four copies of their manuscript and figures, and the full contact details of four reviewers including email addresses, to the following address. The suggested reviewers should not be Editors or Editorial Board members, and at least two should be from other countries.

Papers should be marked for the attention of a subject Editor or the relevant section, if possible. Failure to provide this information will significantly delay processing of the manuscript.

Types of Contributions

Chemosphere accepts Research Papers, Review Papers, Short Communications and Special Issues. A Short Communication should be of significant scientific merit (a novel finding that warrants immediate publication). Proposals for special issues on topical themes should be sent to the relevant subject Editors for evaluation.

Manuscript Preparation

General: Manuscripts must be typewritten, double-spaced with wide margins on one side of white paper. Good quality printouts with a font size of 12 pt are required. The corresponding author should be identified (include a Fax number and E-mail address). Full postal addresses must be given for all co-authors. An electronic copy of the paper should accompany the final version. All standard word processing packages are supported, including Word for Windows and Word Perfect. The Editors reserve the right to adjust style to certain standards of uniformity. Authors should retain a copy of their manuscript since we cannot accept responsibility for damage or loss of papers. Original manuscripts are discarded one month after publication unless the Publisher is asked to return original material after use.

Paper Length: The Editors generally encourage brevity for all Research Papers. Short Communications must not exceed 4 printed pages and will be given priority for rapid publication. Research papers should not exceed 6000 words. Word counts include text, references, figures and tables. Each figure or table should be considered equal to 300 words. The number of figures and/or tables should not exceed seven. Editors may allow longer papers if of extraordinary significance and originality.

Abstracts: Abstracts should not exceed 250 words, and should not contain full references.

Keywords: 4-6 keywords must be included on a separate line below the main abstract and labelled 'Keywords'. To optimise searching, avoid key words already used in the title.

Text: Follow this order when typing manuscripts: Title, Authors, Affiliations, Abstract, Keywords, Text, Acknowledgements, Appendix, References, (Vitae if required - see below) Figure Captions and then Tables. Do not import the Figures or Tables into your text. The corresponding author should be identified with an asterisk and footnote. All other footnotes (except for table footnotes) should be identified with superscript Arabic numbers.

Units: Use SI Units. If other units are necessary, include the conversion factor and add the non-standard unit in parenthesis. Units should be in the form, e.g. g cm-? rather than g/cm?.

Symbols: Define in text. Place extensive list of symbols in an appendix.

Maths: Avoid double suffix. Punctuate carefully.

Abbreviations: Please follow standard guide for abbreviation use (see http://www.elsevier.com/locate/chemosphere for details).

References: All publications cited in the text should be presented in a list of references following the text of the manuscript. In the text refer to:

The author's name (without initials) and year of publication (e.g. "Since Peterson (1993) has shown that..." or "This is in agreement with results obtained later (Kramer, 1994; Tusseau-Vuillemin et al., 1998; Brito and Melo, 1999)"). Please follow the chronological order. For three or more authors use the first author followed by "et al." in the text.

The list of references should be arranged alphabetically by authors' names. The manuscript should be carefully checked to ensure that the spelling of authors' names and dates are exactly the same in the text as in the reference list. The Harvard system of references must be used. International abbreviations should be used for journal names. References should therefore be given in the following form:

Journal article: Tusseau-Vuillemin, M., Mortier, L., Herbaut, L., 1998. Modeling nitrate fluxes in an open coastal environment: Transport versus biogeochemical processes. J. Geophys. Res. 103, 7693-7708.
Book: Cressie, N., 1991. Statistics for Spatial Data. John Wiley and Sons, New York.
Article or chapter in edited book: Jeffries, P., Barea, J.M., 1994. Biochemical cycling and arbuscular mycorrhizas in the sustainability of plant-soil systems. In: Gianinazzi, S., Schuepp, H. (Eds.). Impact of Arbusuclar Mycorrhizas on Sustainable Agriculture and Natural Systems. Birkhauser Verlag, Basel, Switzerland, pp. 101-115.

Format for personal communication: Smith, J., Personal communication.

References to personal correspondence or to unarchived material obtained from the World Wide Web are discouraged. "Anonymous" is not acceptable as an author.

Vitae: Biographical sketches of contributing authors are required for the Environmental Toxicology and Risk Assessment section. These must not exceed 50 words per author.

For further information consult Author Services at Elsevier Science (see below for contact details).

Illustrations:

  • All illustrations should be provided in camera-ready form, suitable for reproduction (which may include reduction) without retouching
  • All illustrations must be readable when reduced to a width of 75mm (single column figure) or 160mm (double column figure)
  • Photographs, charts and diagrams are all to be referred to as "Figure(s)" and should be numbered consecutively in the order to which they are referred. They should accompany the manuscript, but should not be included within the text.
  • All illustrations should be clearly marked on the back with the figure number and the author's name. All figures are to have a caption. Captions should be supplied on a separate sheet.
  • Line drawings: Lines should be black, of an adequate thickness (around 1 pt) and curves should be smooth. Particularly, lines of spectra should be of sufficient thickness. Shading (tints) that simulate grey should not be used and replaced by line shading (hatched).
  • Photographs: Photographs are to be avoided, if possible. Original photographs must be supplied as they are to be reproduced (e.g. black and white or colour). If necessary, a scale should be marked on the photograph. Please note that photocopies of photographs are not acceptable.
  • Colour: Authors are required to pay for the preparation of colour. Colour should only be used when scientifically necessary. Apply to the Author Services at the Publisher for details of cost.

Tables: Tables should be numbered consecutively and given a suitable caption and each table typed on a separate sheet. Footnotes to tables should be typed below the table and should be referred to by superscript lowercase letters. No vertical rules should be used. Tables should not duplicate results presented elsewhere in the manuscript, (e.g. in graphs).

Electronic submission

Authors should submit an electronic copy of their paper with the final version of the manuscript. The electronic copy should match the hardcopy exactly. Always keep a backup copy of the electronic file for reference and safety. Full details of electronic submission and formats can be obtained from Author Gateway.

Preparation of electronic illustrations

Submitting your artwork in an electronic format helps us to produce your work to the best possible standards, ensuring accuracy, clarity and a high level of detail.

General points

  • Always supply high-quality printouts of your artwork, in case conversion of the electronic artwork is problematic.
  • Make sure you use uniform lettering and sizing of your original artwork.
  • Save text in illustrations as "graphics"or enclose the font.
  • Only use the following fonts in your illustrations: Arial, Courier, Helvetica, Times, Symbol.
  • Number the illustrations according to their sequence in the text.
  • Use a logical naming convention for your artwork files, and supply a separate listing of the files and the software used.
  • Provide all illustrations as separate files and as hardcopy printouts on separate sheets.
  • Provide captions to illustrations separately.
  • Produce images near to the desired size of the printed version.

Files can be stored on 3? inch diskette, ZIP-disk or CD (either MS-DOS or Macintosh).

A detailed guide on electronic artwork is available on our website: http://authors.elsevier.com/artwork

You are urged to visit this site; some excerpts from the detailed information are given here.

Formats

Regardless of the application used, when your electronic artwork is finalised, please "save as" or convert the images to one of the following formats. (Note the resolution requirements for line drawings, halftones and line/halftone combinations given below):

  1. EPS: Vector drawings. Embed the font or save the text as "graphics".
  2. TIFF: Colour or greyscale photographs (halftones): always use a minimum of 300 dpi. For colour images always use RGB.
  3. TIFF: Bitmapped line drawings: use a minimum of 1000 dpi.
  4. TIFF: Combinations bitmapped line/half-tone (colour or greyscale): a minimum of 500 dpi is required.
  5. DOC,XLS or PPT: If your electronic artwork is created in any of these Microsoft Office applications, please supply "as is"

Please do not:

  • Supply embedded graphics in your wordprocessor (spreadsheet, presentation) document;
  • Supply files that are optimised for screen use (like GIF, BMP, PICT, WPG); the resolution is too low;
  • Supply files that are too low in resolution;
  • Submit graphics that are disproportionately large for the content.

Miscellaneous

Be careful about the use of significant figures; provide concise description about QA/QC of your data; use periods for your decimal points; define acronyms when they first appear in the text; be consistent in the format of your unit expressions; if possible, please provide line numbers in the text to assist reviewers' comments.

Proofs

Proofs will be sent to the author (first named author if no corresponding author is identified of multi-authored papers) and should be returned within 48 hours of receipt. Corrections should be restricted to typesetting errors; any others may be charged to the author. Any queries should be answered in full. Please note that authors are urged to check their proofs carefully before return, since the inclusion of late corrections cannot be guaranteed. Proofs are to be returned to the Log-in Department, Elsevier Science, The Boulevard, Langford Lane, Kidlington, Oxford OX5 1GB, UK

Offprints

25 offprints will be supplied free of charge. Additional offprints and copies of the issue can be ordered at a specially reduced rate using the order form sent to the corresponding author after the manuscript has been accepted. Orders for reprints (produced after publication of an article) will incur a 50% surcharge.

Copyright

All authors must sign the "Transfer of Copyright" agreement before the article can be published. This transfer agreement enables Elsevier Science Ltd to protect the copyrighted material for the authors, without the author relinquishing his/her proprietary rights. The copyright transfer covers the exclusive rights to reproduce and distribute the article, including reprints, photographic reproductions, microfilm or any other reproductions of a similar nature, and translations. It also includes the right to adapt the article for use in conjunction with computer systems and programs, including reproduction or publication in machine-readable form and incorporation in retrieval systems. Authors are responsible for obtaining from the copyright holder permission to reproduce any material for which copyright already exists.
