Instructions to Authors

Scope and Editorial Policy
Chemistry of Materials is devoted to the publication of original contributions on forefront, fundamental research at the interface of chemistry, chemical engineering, and materials science. Both theoretical and experimental studies which focus on the preparation or understanding of materials with unusual or useful properties are relevant. Among the research areas of interest are solid-state chemistry, both inorganic and organic, and polymer chemistry, especially as directed to the development of materials with novel and/ or useful optical, electrical, magnetic, catalytic, and mechanical properties, among others. Also of interest are fundamental issues relating to the fabrication and processing of electronic, magnetic, or optical materials and devices, including the generation of thin films by chemical vapor and solution deposition. Other appropriate topics include the design, synthesis, investigation, and application of polymeric and molecular precursors to solid-state inorganic materials (including sol-gel chemistry and polymer pyrolysis)  and the preparation and study of biomaterials, nanomaterials, composites, catalysts, liquid crystals, coatings, thin films and interfaces, and self-organized molecular assemblies.

Submission of Manuscripts
Four (4) copies of all hardcopy manuscripts submitted for publication should be sent to Dr. L. V. Interrante, Department of Chemistry, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY12180-3590. Telephone: (518) 276-2644. Fax: (518) 276- 2636. E-mail: chemater@rpi.edu.

Authors should provide their telephone, fax, and e-mail information when submitting manuscripts. Authors are requested to include, for all types of papers as the first page of the manuscript, a graphic and an accompanying<50 word description (see Preparation of Manuscripts for details) for use in the Table of Contents. Please include, at the bottom of this page or on the abstract page, a listing of 3-5 key words that would help to characterize the subject of the paper. Authors in Europe
can also send their manuscripts directly to our European office: Dr. Hellmut Eckert, Institut fur Physikalische Chemie, Westfalische Wilhelms-Universitat Munster, Schlossplatz 7, D-48149 Munster, Germany (telephone: 49-251- 832-9161; fax: 49-251-832-9159; e-mail: eckerth@ uni-muenster.de).
Correspondence concerning accepted papers, proofs, and reprints should be directed to Journal Publications, American Chemical Society, 2540 Olentangy River Road, P.O. Box
3330, Columbus, OH 43210.
There are no page charges for Chemistry of Materials. Submission of a manuscript to Chemistry of Materials implies that the work reported therein has not been published, or submitted for publication, elsewhere in any medium of a public nature, including electronic journals and computer databases. Authors are expected to adhere to the Ethical Guidelines to Publication of Chemical Research, which are published periodically in this and other ACS journals and are available through the Chemistry of Materials homepage or directly via http://pubs.acs.org/ instruct/ethic.html.

General Considerations
Authors are urged to include, either in the paper, or at least in the cover letter, a summary of the key findings reported in the paper and to describe how these findings constitute a significant advance in the particular area of materials chemistry involved. These statements will be helpful to the editors, and the reviewers, in assessing whether the paper meets the requirement of forefront research, which has been established as a key criterion for publication in this journal. In general, authors should present their findings and conclusions with the utmost conciseness consistent with clarity. Articles and Short Reviews that are significantly in excess of the guidelines that have been set for these types of papers (see Preparation of Manuscripts) will not be considered for publication without an adequate justification ofwhythe additional space is needed. Communications are strictly limited to 3 journal pages in length. The following order of presentation is preferred in an Article: title page, abstract, Introduction, Experimental Section, Results, Discussion (these last two sections may be separate or combined, depending on the relative clarityandconciseness of presentation), Conclusions (if needed), Acknowledgement (if needed), Supporting Information description, references, schemes, tables, figure captions, and figures (as needed). Preferably upon initial submission, or at least after revision, a complete set of original figures should be submitted, separate from the text and with each figure labeled with the name of the contributing author, the first words of the title, and the figure number. Since certain types of figures may lose clarity upon reproduction (for example,SEMorTEMviews), a sufficient number (at least three) of high-quality originals must be provided on submission for review purposes. The title should be a brief, accurate description of the contents of the paper and should not contain abbreviations or chemical formulas. The name of the author to whom inquiries about the paper may be addressed should be marked with an asterisk. All papers (including Communications) should be accompanied by a brief (less than 200 words), informative abstract which should be selfcontained for direct use in Chemical Abstracts or other secondary services. The opening sentences of this abstract should present the principal results and conclusions. In the case of Articles, the Introduction should begin with a brief statement outlining the scientific motivation for the research. It should accurately present the study in the context of previous and current work in the field. The Experimental Section should provide a clear, unambiguous description of materials, methods, and equipment in sufficient detail to permit reproduction of the results elsewhere, while avoiding unnecessary repetition or presentation of superfluous data. In the Results and Discussion section(s) the results should be presented and discussed in the context of existing knowledge in the field in as clear and concise a fashion as possible.AConclusions section should be added only in cases where key elements of the resultsanddiscussionmayrequire clarification or amplification. A Conclusions section which simply restates the abstract will not be accepted. Figures and tables should be held to a minimum consistent with adequate presentation of information. Routine data that are not essential to either identification or discussion of the important properties of materials should be avoided. In some cases itmaybe necessary to present such data as appendixes to be deposited in the World Wide Web edition (see section on Supporting Information).

Notice:

Documentsaccepted for publication inACS Journals willbeposted in theWorldWideWebedition of the journal as soon as they are ready for publication, that is, when galley proofs are corrected and all author concerns are resolved. This can occur anywhere from 2 to 11 weeks in advance of the cover date of the printed issue. Authors should take this into account when planning their intellectual and patent activities related to a document. The actual date on which the document is posted on the Web is recorded in a separate line at the bottom of the first page of the document in the printed issue. Special Instructions for Communications Communications are brief, preliminary reports of unusual urgency, significance, and interest to the materials chemistry community. These special criteria will be applied in addition to the others that are normally used (see section on Review of Manuscripts) in judging the suitability of a manuscript submitted for publication as a Communication. The length and format of manuscripts submitted as Communications will be strictly adhered to, and manuscripts that do not meet the following criteria will be returned to the author for changes before further consideration. The length of a Communication is limited to 1500 words or the equivalent. This does not include the references, but does include any figures or tables, which can usually be estimated by assuming that each table, scheme, figure, or part thereof is equivalent to 100 words.ACommunication should not contain section headings, such as Introduction, Experimental Section, Results and Discussion, etc. and is published without an abstract. However, an abstract should be submitted separately along with the text of theCommunication(seeGeneralConsiderations).Any X-ray crystallographic information, experimental details, and characterization data for key compounds should be submitted as Supporting Information and full documentation of each shouldaccompanythe Communication. For further details regarding the size and format for Communications please contact the journal editor's office (e-mail: chemater@rpi.edu). In addition to hardcopy submission via mail, Communications can also be submitted in electronic form via the World Wide Web. Instructions regarding Web Manuscript Submission and the format for these papers can be found at the journal's homepage (http:// pubs.acs.org/CM) and clicking on submit manuscript.

Review of Manuscripts

All papers will be critically reviewed, initially by the Editor to determine whether they are appropriate for the journal and then, in most cases, by two or more expert reviewers; authors are invited to recommend reviewers. However, it should be recognized that the reviewers act only in an advisory capacity and that the final decision concerning a manuscript is the responsibility of the Editors. The following criteria have been established for consideration by reviewers: relevance of the work to the fields of chemistry and materials science; its overall quality and completeness; its originality and significance; the quality, clarity, and conciseness of the manuscript; the quality and appropriate use of figures, tables, etc.; whether the conclusions reached are adequately supported by the data; the use of satisfactory nomenclature; whether the potential hazards have been adequately described; whether the references given are appropriate and adequate. In the case of Communications, the completeness of the work will not be among the criteria, but the additional requirement of unusual urgency, significance, andinterest to the materials chemistrycommunity.
