Instructions to Authors
Information for Authors Special Instructions for This Journal
Guidelines for Authors (PDF*) Preparation and Submission of Hardcopy Manuscripts
Author instructions vary somewhat for each journal. However, there are general instructions for all journals that include the following:
submitting a manuscript on diskette preparing a Media Description Form (PDF*) preparing illustrations guidelines for manuscripts prepared in TeX/LaTeX format Copyright-Related Forms
There are several copyright-related forms that may be used for all journals:
Copyright Status Form (PDF*) Interactive Copyright Status Form (PDF*; type text in data fields and print) Copyright Permission Request Form (Microsoft Word format) Interactive Copyright Permission Request Form (Microsoft Word format) Where to Send the Signed ACS Copyright Status Form Guidelines for reprinting ACS materials Ethical Guidelines
The editors of journals published by the American Chemical Society have developed a set of ethical guidelines (PDF*) for persons engaged in the publication of chemical research; specifically, for editors, authors, and manuscript reviewers. These guidelines are offered not in the sense that there is any immediate crisis in ethical behavior, but rather from a conviction that the observance of high ethical standards is so vital to the whole scientific enterprise that a definition of those standards should be brought to the attention of all concerned.
*NOTE: PDF files listed on this page must be viewed with Acrobat 4.0 or later. The Adobe Acrobat Reader for Macintosh, Windows, DOS, or UNIX can be obtained from Adobe's World Wide Web server. General Information
Manuscripts prepared with the versions of the word-processing packages listed below will be used for production, provided the guidelines given are followed.
Currently Acceptable Word Processing Packages
Macintosh:
WordPerfect 3.5 Microsoft Word, up to Word 2001 FrameMaker 5.5 IBM and Compatibles:
WordPerfect, through version 9 Microsoft Word for Windows, up to Word 2000 FrameMaker 5.5 TeX users should follow the guidelines available at http://pubs.acs.org/instruct/texguide.html
Preparing the Manuscript
Use Times or Symbol fonts. The text should be left-justified. Automatic end-of-line hyphenation should be turned off. Use carriage returns only to end headings and paragraphs, not to break lines. Do not insert spaces before punctuation. Use the correct reference style for the journal to which the manuscript is to be submitted. Use the character that is intended [i.e., do not use l (ell) for 1 (one), O (oh) for 0 (zero), x (ex) for x (times)]. Use consistent notations and spellings. Use a spell checker. Prepare tables with the table format feature of your word processor and ensure that each data entry is in its own cell. Create display equations using the MathType Equation Editor. Special characters (i.e., Greek and math symbols) must be present in the body of the text as characters, not as graphic representations. Preparing the Disk
Save the text in the "normal" or document mode or its equivalent. If a non-Western version of software has been used, save the text in the Rich Text Format (RTF). Do not save as ASCII or "text only". Do not include any page-layout instructions, such as place Figure 1 here, in the file. Do not password-protect the files or save the files as read only. If an ACS manuscript template has been used, follow the instructions in the ReadMe file for the specific template you are using. If an ACS template has not been used, save all of the text (including title page, abstract, body of the paper, references, figure captions, scheme and chart titles, and footnotes) and tabular material in one file. Place all tabular material at the end of the file. Remove from the file all material that is not to be printed in the journal. If "track changes" was used, remove all strike-outs before saving the file. Use a virus detection program containing the most recent virus definitions available. The presence of a virus may delay file processing. Ensure that the disk contains the correct file for the manuscript that has been accepted. Complete the Media Description Form available at http://pubs.acs.org/instruct/diskdescrform.pdf For information on preparing graphics, see http://pubs.acs.org/instruct/illus.html Multiple printouts of the manuscript are required for review. Consult the most recent information for authors for the copy requirements for the particular ACS journal to which your manuscript will be submitted. The version on the disk MUST exactly match the most recent printout version of the manuscript under consideration for publication.

Softcopy manuscripts prepared in LaTeX will be used in journal production provided the following guidelines are adhered to.
Use only LaTeX2e. Use of plain TeX and RevTeX is discouraged. Use generic style files as far as possible. Only a minimum of formatting is required in the document. Include all sections of the article in one single file. Include the list of references within the LaTeX file. Do not submit separate .bbl or .bib files containing references. Follow the correct reference style for the journal. Refer to a recent issue of the journal for the appropriate reference style. References should be cited in text using cite, and the list of references should be itemized using ibitem Use frac to build fractions. Do not use over or stackrel to build fractions in displayed equations. Use sumfor summations and prod for products. Use the array environment only to build true matrices, not for aligning multiline equations. Use characters/symbols in the generic LaTeX character set only. Symbols from other sets may not translate correctly. Avoid extensive use of
ewcommand and def. Some style files (text and bibliographic) that are available in the public domain may be used for most ACS journals, e.g., jacs.sty and jacs.bst; jpc.sty and jpc.bst; achemso. Please note that the ACS does not provide support for using these files. For Further Information:
