About the journal

The Chemical Record (TCR) is a “highlights?journal publishing timely and critical overviews of new

developments at the cutting edge of chemistry of interest to a wide audience of chemists. The scope of published reviews includes all areas related to physical chemistry, analytical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, polymer chemistry, materials chemistry, bioorganic chemistry, biochemistry, biotechnology and medicinal chemistry as well as interdisciplinary fields. TCR provides carefully selected highlight papers by leading researchers that introduce the author’s own experimental and theoretical results in a framework designed to establish perspectives with earlier and contemporary work and provide a critical review of the present state of the subject. The articles are intended to present concise evaluations of current trends in chemistry research to help chemists gain useful insights into fields outside their specialization and provide experts with summaries of recent key developments. Authors are encouraged to give perspectives on their own personal thinking and the historical development that led to significant breakthroughs in research. New developments from industrial laboratories will be featured in a separate section covering corporate research. All manuscripts are peer-reviewed. Manuscripts are generally solicited by the editors, however, voluntary contributions are also welcome. In the latter case potential authors are asked to contact the Editorial Office with an outline before beginning to write in order to avoid duplication of effort and to ensure suitability of the topic and the level of coverage.

Manuscripts should be in English (American spelling preferred), between 15-20 double-spaced typed manuscript pages in length and contain no more than 12 figures and/or tables. A passport type photo and a short summary of the career to date of the corresponding author(s) should be included. A graphical abstract for use in each issue’s Table of Contents must be provided as a part of all manuscripts.

A separate title page listing title, authors, and their affiliations, phone, fax and e-mail details should be supplied with each manuscript. In the case of multiple authors, indicate the author responsible for correspondence and checking proofs. A telephone number and the complete mailing address must be supplied for this author. The title should be as specific as possible within the limit of eight to ten words. Please also supply a short version of the title to be used as a running head.

Manuscripts should be typed double spaced throughout and on one side of each sheet only, on a heavy grade of paper with margins of at least one inch on all sides. No article can be published unless accompanied by a signed publication agreement, which serves as a transfer of copyright from author to the Japan Chemical Forum. A publication agreement may be obtained from the Editorial Office and is also available on the Journal’s home page http://www.interscience.wiley.com/jpages/1527-8999/wiley-l.pdf. A copy of the publication agreement appears in most issues of the journal. Only original papers will be accepted and copyright in published papers will be vested in the Japan Chemical Forum and the publisher. It is the author's responsibility to obtain written permission to reproduce material that has appeared in another publication. If the paper is a "work made for hire," the agreement must be signed by the employer. It is the author's responsibility to obtain written permission to reproduce material which has appeared in another publication.

3. SYNOPSIS AND GRAPHICAL ABSTRACT

A short synopsis (200 words or less) is required for all articles. This synopsis should be carefully prepared, as it will be incorporated into the published article as an abstract. The synopsis should be a summary of the entire paper, not just the conclusion, and should precede the main body of the paper. The author is also expected to provide three to five keywords or phrases to appear after the synopsis and to be used for the subject index at the end of the volume.

The graphical abstract should contain the following information listed sequentially on separate lines: title, name(s) of author(s), address(es) of author(s), brief abstract (limited to 80-100 words), and a figure or scheme summarizing the essence of the article.

4. REFERENCES

Wiley's Journal Styles Are Now in EndNote
EndNote is a software product that we recommend to our journal authors to help simplify and streamline the research process. Using EndNote's bibliographic management tools, you can search bibliographic databases, build and organize your reference collection, and then instantly output your bibliography in any Wiley journal style.
Download Reference Style for this Journal: If you already use EndNote, you can download the reference style for this journal.
How to Order: To learn more about EndNote, or to purchase your own copy, click here.
Technical Support: If you need assistance using EndNote, contact endnote@isiresearchsoft.com, or visit www.endnote.com/support.

Authors must carefully cite the relevant leading literature. Related work in the literature must not be ignored and superfluous references must not be included. The references should be numbered consecutively in the order of their appearance and should be complete, including authors' initials and--for unpublished lectures or symposia--the title of the paper, the date, and the name of the sponsoring society. Please compile references on a separate sheet at the end of the manuscript. Abbreviations of journal titles should conform to the practices of American Chemical Society(ACS). Note the following examples:

Book:

Stothers, J.B. Carbon-13 NMR Spectroscopy, Academic: New York, 1972; Chapter 2.

Journal:

Fletcher, T. R.; Rosenfeld, R. N. J Am Chem Soc 1985, 107, 2203-2212.

Conference:

Ito, H.; Willson, C. G.; Frehet, J. M. J. Digest of the Technical Papers of the Symposium on VLSI Technology; Business Center for Academic Societies, Tokyo, Japan, September 1982; p 86.

5. FIGURES AND TABLES

All figures should be numbered with Arabic numbers and cited sequentially in the manuscript. All figure captions should be typed double-spaced on a separate sheet placed at the end of the manuscript. The importance of good quality illustrations cannot be overstressed. Good glossy prints are required for all photographs. Any cropping of the color figure should be clearly indicated. Color figures are generally printed at the author's expense. The Publisher will provide cost estimates prior to printing. A limited number of color figures that are of critical importance and significantly enhance the presentation will be considered for publication at the Publisher's expense subject to Editorial recommendation. Figures should be professionally prepared and submitted in a form suitable for reproduction (camera-ready copy). Computer-generated graphs are acceptable only if they have been printed with a good quality laser printer. It is best to submit drawings about twice the final reproduction size (maximum final size?1 ?19 cm). Bear in mind that the lettering will be reduced to about 1.5 mm and the lineweight and characters must be able to withstand this reduction without breaking up or filling in. If in doubt about the preparation of illustrations, please contact the Editorial Office.

Number all tables with roman numerals and cite sequentially in the text. Each table and caption should be on a separate sheet appended at the end of the manuscript. Original typescript is required since tabular material will be reproduced directly from copy. If the table is a computer printout, be sure to supply the original output and make sure that the lettering is solid, even, and black.

Whenever possible, chemical structures should be drawn with an appropriate drawing program. The most suitable settings that should be used with ChemDraw are listed below. The settings of other programs should be adjusted similarly.

Drawing settings:

chain angle:120?

bond spacing:18% of width

fixed length:14.4 pt (0.508 cm, 0.2 in.)

bold width:2.0 pt (0.071 cm, 0.0278 in.)

line width:0.6 pt (0.021 cm, 0.0083 in.)

margin width:1.6 pt (0.056 cm, 0.0222 in.)

hash spacing:2.5 pt (0.088 cm, 0.0345 in.)

Text settings:

Helvetica

size:10

Preferences:

units:points

6. EQUATIONS

Authors are cautioned to type--wherever possible--all mathematical and chemical symbols, equations, and formulas. If these must be handwritten please print clearly and leave ample space above and below for printer's marks; please use only ink. All Greek or unusual symbols should be identified in the margin the first time they are used. Please distinguish in the margins of the manuscript between capital and small letters of the alphabet wherever confusion may arise (e.g., k, K, ?). Please underline with a wavy line all vector quantities. Use fractional exponents to avoid root signs.

The nomenclature sponsored by the International Union of Abbreviations should follow the American Chemical Society Handbook for Authors. Chemical bonds should be correctly placed, and double bonds clearly indicated. Valence is to be indicated by superscript plus and minus signs.

7. FOOTNOTES

Use footnotes only to (a) give special information about the location of the author, or (b) amplify information in tables. Indicate footnotes of type (a) by typographic symbols in the order *, ? ? and ? indicate those of type (b) by superscript lower-case letters.

8. PROOFS

Final revised manuscript: A final version of your accepted manuscript should be submitted on disk as well as hard copy, using the guidelines for Disk Submission Instructions form usually included in most issues of the Journal, or on the Journal home page (http://www.interscience.wiley.com).

One set of proofs and the original manuscript will be sent to the corresponding author for corrections to proofs. Since author's alterations (as opposed to printer's errors) in proof are expensive, the publisher reserves the right to charge authors for alterations to text. A reprint order form is enclosed with the proofs and should be returned with the corrected proofs.

9. DISK SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS

Please return your final, revised manuscript on disk as well as hard copy.
The hard copy must match the disk.

The Journal strongly encourages authors to deliver the final, revised version of their accepted manuscripts (text, tables, and, if possible, illustrations) on disk. Given the near-universal use of computer word-processing for manuscript preparation, we anticipate that providing a disk will be convenient for you, and it carries the added advantages of maintaining the integrity of your keystrokes and expediting typesetting. Please return the disk submission slip below with your manuscript and labeled disk(s).

10. GUIDELINES FOR ELECTRONIC SUBMISSION

Text
Storage medium. 3-1/2" high-density disk in IBM MS-DOS, Windows, or Macintosh format.

Software and format. Microsoft Word 6.0 is preferred, although manuscripts prepared with any other microcomputer word processor are acceptable. Refrain from complex formatting; the Publisher will style your manuscript according to the Journal design specifications. Do not use desktop publishing software such as Aldus PageMaker or Quark XPress. If you prepared your manuscript with one of these programs, export the text to a word processing format. Please make sure your word processing program's "fast save" feature is turned off. Please do not deliver files that contain hidden text: for example, do not use your word processor's automated features to create footnotes or reference lists.

File names. Submit the text and tables of each manuscript as a single file. Name each file with your last name (up to eight letters). Text files should be given the three-letter extension that identifies the file format. Macintosh users should maintain the MS-DOS "eight dot three" file-naming convention.

Labels. Label all disks with your name, the file name, and the word processing program and version used.

Illustrations
All print reproduction requires files for full color images to be in a CMYK color space. If possible, ICC or ColorSync profiles of your output device should accompany all digital image submissions.

Storage medium. Submit as separate files from text files, on separate disks or cartridges. If feasible, full color files should be submitted on separate disks from other image files. 3-1/2" high-density disks, CD, Iomega Zip, and 5 1/4" 44- or 88-MB SyQuest cartridges can be submitted. At authors' request, cartridges and disks will be returned after publication.

Software and format. All illustration files should be in TIFF or EPS (with preview) formats. Do not submit native application formats.

Resolution. Journal quality reproduction will require greyscale and color files at resolutions yielding approximately 300 ppi. Bitmapped line art should be submitted at resolutions yielding 600-1200 ppi. These resolutions refer to the output size of the file; if you anticipate that your images will be enlarged or reduced, resolutions should be adjusted accordingly.

File names. Illustration files should be given the 2- or 3-letter extension that identifies the file format used (i.e., .tif, .eps).

Labels. Label all disks and cartridges with your name, the file names, formats, and compression schemes (if any) used. Hard copy output must accompany all files.
