About the journal

'Cells Tissues Organs', formerly 'Acta Anatomica', is a well-established journal offering rapid exchange of information gained from experimental and theoretical investigations on all aspects of the formation and transformation of biological structure. CTO emphasizes cell biology, developmental biology and neuroscience. Further, it focuses on the emerging fields of tissue engineering, artificial organs, in vitro systems, transplantation biology and computational neuroscience ¨C areas where the discoveries of the former are beginning to be use in novel and systematic ways. High-quality papers from the more traditional fields of biology will also be accepted.

CTO offers a rapid and fair peer-review and exquisite production quality. In the section 'Patent Watch', new patent submissions and patents granted are listed and briefly described. Special topic issues highlight areas of recent research interest.

Aims and Scope

'Cells Tissues Organs' is an international forum for communication among scientists interested in current research on functional morphology and morphogenesis at all levels of organization, from subcellular to macroscopy, with emphasis on humans and higher vertebrates. The journal offers rapid exchange of novel and significant information gained from experimental and theoretical investigations on all aspects that are pertinent to the formation and transformation of biological structure.

Instructions to Authors

Topics of Special Interest

Developmental and reproductive biology, cell biology, tissue engineering, artificial organs, in vitro systems and transplantation. Papers highlighting the links between structural and functional aspects are preferred.

Types of Papers

The journal publishes:
(1) Original papers on experimental research.
(2) Theoretical contributions. These will appear in the section Hypotheses and Concepts and may include provocative hypotheses, provided that they are innovative, well founded and show promise for new avenues of research.
(3) Short reviews/perspectives.
While (1) and (2) are submitted contributions, reviews/perspectives (3) are invited. Suggestions concerning reviews on current topics of high interest are welcome.
All manuscripts must be accompanied by a covering letter signed by all authors. Assurance should be given that the manuscript is not under simultaneous consideration by any other publication. Reported studies using animal and human subjects must have been approved by the appropriate institutional review boards.

It is the author's responsibility to obtain permission to reproduce illustrations, tables, etc. from other publications.

Format and Arrangement

Manuscripts should be written in English and be as concise as possible. They should be submitted in quadruplicate (with four sets of original illustrations), typewritten double-spaced on one side of the paper, with a wide margin. Lines should be numbered on the margin.

Title page: The first page of each paper should indicate the title, the authors?names, the institute where the work was conducted, and a short title for use as running head.

Full address: The exact postal address of the corresponding author complete with postal code must be given at the bottom of the title page. Please also supply phone and fax numbers, as well as e-mail address.

Key words: For indexing purposes provide a list of up to 5 key words.

Abstract: Each paper needs an abstract of up to about 20 lines summarizing the essential new information communicated.

Subheadings: Introduction; Materials and Methods; Results; Discussion.

List of abbreviations: Provide on a separate page a list of the abbreviations used in your paper. The list will be printed as a footnote on the first page of your article.

Footnotes: With the exception of the list of abbreviations, footnotes should be avoided. When essential, they are numbered consecutively and typed at the foot of the appropriate page.

Nomenclature: The nomenclature used should conform, wherever possible, to the current edition of the Nomina Anatomica (Terminologia Anatomica), Nomina Anatomica Veterinaria, or to the Nomina Anatomica Avium.

Tables and illustrations: Tables and illustrations (both numbered in Arabic numerals) should be prepared on separate sheets. Tables require a heading and figures a legend, also prepared on a separate sheet. For the reproduction of illustrations, only good drawings and original photographs can be accepted; negatives or photocopies cannot be used. Due to technical reasons, figures with a screen background should not be submitted. When possible, group several illustrations on one block for reproduction (max. size 181 x 223 mm) or provide crop marks. On the back of each illustration, indicate its number, the author’s name, and ‘top?with a soft pencil. Electronically submitted b/w half-tone and color illustrations must have a final resolution of 300 dpi after scaling, line drawings one of 800-1200 dpi.

During the review process, the decision will be made as to which color illustrations of a manuscript can be reproduced free of charge. Authors will be informed of this at the time of acceptance of their paper. Otherwise, these illustrations will be reproduced at the author's expense. Up to 6 color illustrations per page can be integrated into the text at the special price of CHF 660.¨C / USD 545.00 per page.

References

References in the text should be made by author's name followed by the year of publication, arranged chronologically, then alphabetically. When there are more than two authors, use the first author's name and et al. When references are made to more than one paper by the same author, published in the same year, designate them as a, b, c, etc. The list of references should include only those publications which are cited in the text. Material submitted for publication but not yet accepted may be cited in the text as unpublished databut must not be included in the reference list. In the list of references, arrange references alphabetically listing all authors, then year of publication. Preferably, please cite all authors. Abbreviate journal names according to Index Medicus.
