About the journal

Aims & Scope

Cell Biology and Toxicology is an international journal which provides a rapid publication outlet for papers of high scientific standards in the areas of cell biology, genetic, molecular and cellular toxicology.
The scope of publication includes scientific reports dealing with the basic biology and with the physiological, pharmacological, and toxic response of cellular systems. Studies of subcellular and cellular systems derived from both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell types are appropriate. Studies of toxic effects may include, but are not limited to, cytotoxicity, mutagenicity, carcinogenicity, and teratogenicity. Moreover, investigations on the development of cell systems for these purposes are relevant. In particular, the journal welcomes approaches to cellular studies or molecular structure activity correlations that provide sound scientific information leading to the reduced use of experimental animals.
Cell Biology and Toxicology publishes several types of articles including papers describing original research results, and reviews on subjects of contemporary importance to cell biologists and cell toxicologists. Also brief announcements of scientific meetings or courses, and of the availability of funding, fellowships, and scholarships, are published.

Instructions to Authors

Manuscript Submission

Kluwer Academic Publishers request the submission of manuscripts and figures in electronic form in addition to a hard-copy printout. The preferred storage medium for your electronic manuscript is a 3 1/2 inch diskette. Please label your diskette properly, giving exact details on the name(s) of the file(s), the operating system and software used. Always save your electronic manuscript in the word processor format that you use; conversions to other formats and versions tend to be imperfect. In general, use as few formatting codes as possible. For safety's sake, you should always retain a backup copy of your file(s). After acceptance, please make absolutely sure that you send the latest (i.e., revised) version of your manuscript, both as hard-copy printout and on diskette (submission in electronic form of the final version of your article is compulsory).

Kluwer Academic Publishers prefer articles submitted in word processing packages such as MS Word, WordPerfect, etc. running under operating systems MS DOS, Windows and Apple Macintosh, or in the file format LaTeX. Articles submitted in other software programs can also be accepted.

For submission in LaTeX, Kluwer Academic Publishers have developed a Kluwer LaTeX class file, which can be downloaded from: http://www.wkap.nl/authors/jrnlstylefiles/
Use of this class file is highly recommended. Do not use versions downloaded from other sites. Technical support is available at: texhelp@wkap.nl

For the purpose of reviewing, articles for publication should be submitted as hard-copy printout (fourfold) and a diskette to the publisher at the following address:

Journals Editorial Office
Cell Biology and Toxicology
P.O. Box 990
3300 AZ Dordrecht
The Netherlands

The author should retain the original and send good, clear, legible photocopies. The original artwork of the figures should be attached to one copy. Manuscripts should be typed double-spaced throughout on one side of good quality paper, with sufficiently wide margins (3-5 cm). All pages (including the tables, figures, legends and references) should be numbered consecutively in the upper right-hand corner. Each page should also include the senior author's surname typed in the upper left-hand corner.

The manuscript should be arranged in the following order (typed capital + lower case):

Title page

  • Title (the title should be as short as possible, but should contain adequate information regarding the contents).
  • Subtitle (this may be used to supplement and thereby shorten an excessively long main title).
  • Author‘s full name(s) (if more than one, use ’and?before the last name).
  • Affiliation(s)/Address(es)
  • Mailing address for corresponding author

Key words/Abstract/Abbreviations

  • Key words (maximum of 6, in alphabetical order, suitable for indexing).
  • Abstract (brief and informative, not to exceed 250 words).
  • Abbreviations (arranged alphabetically, only those which are not familiar and/or commonly used).

Main text

  • The relative importance of headings and subheadings should be clear. The approximate location of figures and tables should be indicated in the margin.
  • New paragraphs should be indicated by clear indentation.
  • The use of footnotes should be avoided. However, if essential, they should be typed on the appropriate page, but clearly separated from the text with a line above them.
  • Mathematical formulas should have a clarification of all symbols and an accompanying ’translation?of the meanings, e.g. ’this formula shows that when the highly variable factor ¦Ñ is found to exceed unity, the viscosity of the medium ¦Â is no longer significant?

Style manuals

The following three books are recommended as guides in writing scientific papers:

  • Council of biology editors style manual. A guide for authors, editors and publishers in the biological sciences, 4th edn., Bethesda MD: Council of Biology Editors; 1978.
  • O‘Connor M, Woodford FP, eds. Writing scientific papers in English, Amsterdam: Elsevier; 1976.
  • Reynolds L, Simmonds D. Presentation of data in science. Publications, slides, posters, overhead projectors, tapeslides, television. The Hague: Martinus Nijhoff; 1983.

Abbreviations and units

Only SI units and abbreviations should be used although some quantities may be given in common units, e.g. mmHg. Abbreviations should be defined in full as mentioned above under item 2. Whenever in doubt use SI (Systéme International) units.

General

To save time and trouble for all concerned, the authors are requested, when preparing manuscripts, to follow the latest issue of the journal in all details not mentioned here. The attention of typists is drawn to the journal‘s usage of lowercase and capital letters and punctuation style.

Acknowledgements

To assistants, grants, funding bodies etc. Please make sure that any persons acknowledged consent to their names appearing.

References

  • References should be cited according to the author/date (Harvard) system, i.e. (Smith, 1993; Smith and Jones, 1993; Smith et al, 1993a). Citations of personal communications and unpublished data should be avoided unless absolutely necessary. When used, such citations should appear in the text only, e.g. ?E.D. Smith, personal communication)? and not in the reference list.
  • Abbreviate titles of periodicals according to the style of Index Medicus.
  • References should be listed in alphabetical order and styled according to the following examples (Vancouver style):

Chapter in book: Bauer RB. Mechanical compression of the vertebral arteries. In: Berguer R, Bauer RD, eds. Vertebrobasilar arterial occlusive disease: medical and surgical management. New York: Raven Press; 1984: 45-71.

Article in periodical: Du Doulay G, Shar SH, Currie JC, Logue V. The mechanism of hydromyelia in Chiari type 1 malformations. Br J Radiol. 1974; 74: 579-87.

Book: Cohen J. Statistical power analysis for the behavioral sciences. Revised edn. New York: Academic Press; 1977: 217-48.

Do not use italics in titles of articles or books.

Tables

  • Each table should be mentioned in the text. Careful thought should be given to the orientation of each table when it is constructed. Tables which can be arranged so that they can be read without rotating the page are preferred. With a little thought, virtually any table can be converted into this type, with increased convenience to the user.
  • Tables may be edited by the publisher to permit more compact typesetting.
  • Tables should be numbered with arabic numerals, followed by the title. Horizontal rules should be indicated, vertical rules should not be used.
  • Footnotes to tables should be marked with superscript letters.

Figures

  • Each figure should be mentioned in the text.
  • Line drawings should be in a form suitable for reproduction, preferably 1.5 to 2 times their final intended size. Glossy prints, black-ink drawings or laserprinted (not dot-matrix) computer-generated graphics may be submitted. Very high quality photocopies may be suitable. Extremely small type should be avoided as figures are often reduced in size: as a guide, the smallest lettering should not be less than 2 mm high after reduction.
  • Photographs should be supplied as black-and-white, high-contrast glossy prints. Colour plates may be inserted at the author‘s own expense (see separate section on colour illustrations).
  • Figures as well as legends should be identified by arabic numbers. Where multi-part figures are used, each part should be clearly identified in the legend, preferably with (lower case) letters.
  • Identify each illustration, on the back, by lightly writing author‘s name and figure number, and an indication of the top. Figures which need to be placed landscape should be avoided if possible.

Colour Illustrations

The publication of colour illustration is at the discretion of the Editor. As a result of the very high cost of colour reproduction authors will be asked to partially subsidize colour reproductions. Authors are further requested to submit colour slides/transparancies which can stand a common multiplication/reduction factor and which are as close as possible to the correct colour quality. These specifications will help to reduce cost and hence lower the subsidy, and ensure the best possible reproduction quality.

Proofs

Proofs will be sent to the corresponding author by e-mail (if no e-mail address is available or appears to be out of order, proofs will be sent by regular mail).

Your response, with or without corrections, should be sent within 72 hours. Please do not make any corrections to the PDF file.
Minor corrections (+/- 10) should be sent as an e-mail attachment to: proofscorrection@wkap.nl. Always quote the four-letter journal code and article number and the PIPS No. from your proof in the subject field of your e-mail.
Extensive corrections must be clearly marked on a printout of the PDF file and should be sent by first-class mail (airmail overseas).

Offprints

Ordering information for offprints will be sent with the proofs.

Page charges

No page charges are levied for this journal.
