About the journal

"ORCA has done more than any group to encourage a broad and balanced approach to caries prevention. For

that, future generations will be indebted to ORCA and its excellent journal,¡®Caries Research¡¯. "
Basil G. Bibby, Eastman Dental Center

Caries Research?publishes epidemiological, clinical and laboratory studies in dental caries and related dental diseases. Some studies build on the considerable advances already made in caries prevention, e.g. through fluoride application and inhibition of intra-oral acid formation. Some aim to improve understanding of the increasingly important problem of dental erosion. Others monitor the changing pattern of caries in different populations, explore improved methods of diagnosis or evaluate methods of prevention or treatment. The broad coverage of current research has given the journal an international reputation as an indispensable source for both basic scientists and clinicians engaged in understanding and preventing dental disease.

The aim and scope of the journal ¡®Caries Research¡¯ is to promote research in dental caries and related matters through publication of such research, and to present critical evaluations of research findings. The journal will publish articles of original work and reviews on the processes underlying dental caries, and other dental hard tissue conditions, on factors promoting or retarding their progress, and on their etiology, diagnosis, epidemiology, prevention and management.

Four copies of each manuscript should be submitted (with four sets of illustrations of which one is an original), typewritten double-spaced on one side of the paper, with a wide margin.

Conditions

All manuscripts are subject to editorial review. Manuscripts are received with the explicit understanding that they are not under simultaneous consideration by any other publication. A covering letter should be included with both the first and final version of the manuscript with the signature of all authors to confirm that they have seen and approved the submission. Submission of an article for publication implies the transfer of the copyright from the author to the publisher upon acceptance. Accepted papers become the permanent property of ¡®Caries Research¡¯ and may not be reproduced by any means, in whole or in part, without the written consent of the publisher. It is the author’s responsibility to obtain permission to reproduce illustrations, tables, etc. from other publications.

Arrangement

Title page: The first page of each paper should indicate the title, the authors?names, the institute where the work was conducted, and a short title for use as running head.

Full address: The exact postal address of the corresponding author complete with postal code must be given at the bottom of the title page. Please also supply phone and fax numbers, as well as e-mail address.

Key words: For indexing purposes, a list of 3¨C10 key words in English is essential.

Abstract: Each paper needs an abstract of up to 10 lines.

Footnotes: Avoid footnotes. When essential, they are numbered consecutively and typed at the foot of the appropriate page.

Tables and illustrations: Tables and illustrations (both numbered in Arabic numerals) should be prepared on separate sheets. Tables require a heading and figures a legend, also prepared on a separate sheet. For the reproduction of illustrations, only good drawings and original photographs can be accepted; negatives or photocopies cannot be used. Due to technical reasons, figures with a screen background should not be submitted. When possible, group several illustrations on one block for reproduction (max. size 181 x 223 mm) or provide crop marks. On the back of each illustration, indicate its number, the author’s name, and ¡®top?with a soft pencil. Electronically submitted b/w half-tone and color illustrations must have a final resolution of 300 dpi after scaling, line drawings one of 800-1200 dpi.

Color Illustrations

Up to 6 color illustrations per page can now be integrated within the text at the special price of CHF 660.¨C / USD 545.00 per page. Color illustrations are reproduced at the author’s expense.

References

Identify references [in square brackets] in the text by naming the authors and the year. 1 author: [Forsten, 1990]; 2 authors: [Geddes and Rølla, 1988]; 3 and more authors: [Hallgren et al., 1992]. Material submitted for publication but not yet accepted should be noted as ¡®unpublished data¡¯ and may not be included in the reference list. The list of references should include only those publications cited in the text. Arrange the reference list in strict alphabetical order according to the examples given below. The authors?surnames followed by their initials should be given, and each name should be separated by a comma. Preferably, please cite all authors. For papers by the same authors, listing should be according to the year; for papers by the same authors published in the same year, use the letters a, b, c, etc. directly (no space) connected to the year. For journal abbreviations, please use the Index Medicus system.
