About the journal

Cancer Gene Therapy publishes the results of laboratory investigations, preclinical studies, and clinical trials in the field of gene transfer/gene therapy as applied to cancer research. Types of manuscripts considered include:

Original Research Articles. Articles should include, as appropriate, a clear statement of purpose; a historical review when desirable; a description of the procedures, methods, and subjects or materials used (previously published procedures require only references to the original); a full report of the findings, including discussion and references to relevant findings of other researchers.

Instructions to Authors

Welcome to the electronic manuscript submission and peer review website for Cancer Gene Therapy. The instructions below are structured so you can quickly and easily answer the following questions:

  1. Is my manuscript suitable for Cancer Gene Therapy? (Editorial Policy)
  2. How do I format my manuscript for Cancer Gene Therapy? (Format of Papers)
  3. How do I submit my manuscript to Cancer Gene Therapy? (Submission of Papers)

Editorial Policy

Editors:

Robert E. Sobol, Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center, San Diego, California, and Kevin J. Scanlon, Keck Graduate Institute, Claremont, California

Cancer Gene Therapy publishes the results of laboratory investigations, preclinical studies, and clinical trials in the field of gene transfer/ gene therapy as applied to cancer research and is published monthly. The journal is covered by Chemical Abstracts, BIOSIS, Science Citation Index, Current Contents/ Life Sciences, Current Contents/ Clinical Medicine, and Index Medicus/ MEDLINE.

Authors are asked to write their manuscripts in English using an easily readable style. Spelling and phraseology should conform either to standard English or to standard American usage and should be consistent throughout the paper. A manuscript will be considered for publication on the understanding that:

  1. all named authors have agreed to its submission
  2. it is not currently being considered for publication by another journal
  3. if the paper is accepted it will not subsequently be published in the same or similar form in any language without the consent of publishers
  4. authors have obtained permission from their employers or institution to publish, if they have a contractual or moral obligation to do so.

Authors will be entitled to publish any part of their paper elsewhere without permission, provided the usual acknowledgements are given. The assignment of copyright will not affect subsisting patent rights ar arrangements relating to them.

Format of Papers

Original Research Articles and Case Reports
These should be arranged as follows:

  1. Title page
  2. Abstract (less than 200 words and written in a style that conveys the essential message of the paper in abbreviated form)
  3. Introduction (should assume that the reader is knowledgeable in the field and should therefore be as brief as possible)
  4. Materials and Methods (methods that have been published in detail elsewhere should not be described in detail)
  5. Results
  6. Discussion
  7. References (see guidelines below)
  8. Tables (see guidelines below)
  9. Figures (see guidelines below)

For all manuscripts the title page should bear the title of the paper, the full names of the authors, highest academic degree obtained, and affiliations, together with the name, full postal address, and telephone, fax and email address of the author to whom correspondence and reprint requests are to be sent (this information is also asked for on the electronic submission form). The running title should consist of not more than 50 letters and spaces. Three to six keywords should be included. Authors should disclose the sources of any support for the work, received in the form of grants and/or equipment and drugs.

Authors should also describe any affiliations or financial arrangements with any company whose product appears prominently in the manuscript or with any company making a competing product. Such information will be kept in confidence while the paper is under review and will not influence the decision. If the article is accepted for publication, the editor will discuss with the authors the manner in which this information will be communicated to the reader.

Original Research Articles should include, as appropriate:

  1. a clear statement of purpose;
  2. a historical review when desirable;
  3. a description of the procedures, methods, and subjects or materials used (previously published procedures require only references to the original);
  4. a full report of the findings, including discussion and references to relevant findings of other researchers.

The online submission form will ask you (with all manuscript types) for the names of possible reviewers and an indication of the names of individuals who may not be able to provide an unbiased review.

Case Reports
Include an introduction justifying the reporting of the case; a description of the case; and discussion.

Preliminary Communications
Shorter descriptions of important innovative developments will be considered for preliminary publication. They should comprise 2 pages of text, one figure or table and up to 10 references.

Review Articles
Updates on progress in the main field of Drug Resistance/ Sensitivity Gene Therapy, Tumor Suppressor and Anti-Oncogene Therapy, Cytokine/Tumor Immunotherapy, etc.

Industry Perspective
Descriptions of the newest technology being developed in the corporate sector.

Letters to the Editor
Brief comments on articles published in the journal or other information of interest to our readers.

References
Only papers closely related to the authors' work should be quoted. References and notes should be numbered sequentially as they appear in the text, tables, and figures, and they should be compiled at the end of the article in the order of text citation. List a reference only one time. Abbreviations for titles of periodicals should conform to those used in the latest edition of Index Medicus. References should include authors' last names and initials, article title, journal, volume, page, and year. Include the city and publisher's name for books. For further information, consult the American Medical Association Manual of Style:

Examples:

  • Gastl G, Finstad CL, Guarini A, et al. Retroviral vector-mediated lymphokine gene transfer into human renal cancer cells. Cancer Res. 1992; 52:6229-6236.
  • Meyerowitz BE, Heinrich RI, Schag CC. A competency-based approach to coping with cancer. In: Burish TG, Bradley L, eds. Coping With Chronic Illness: Research and Applications, 2nd ed. New York, NY: Academic Press; 1983:137-158.

    House Style

As the electronic submission will provide the basic material for typesetting, it is important that papers are prepared in the general editorial style of the journal. For style information and lists of standard abbreviations, consult the American Medical Association Manual of Style, 9th ed. (Baltimore, MD, Williams & Wilkins, 1998) (see link above).

    1. Use the same sans serif typeface for all figures (Arial, Univers?) at 12pt and double spaced with a wide margin
    2. Use SI units throughout
    3. Abbreviations should be preceded by the words for which they stand in the first instance of use
    4. Do not make rules thinner than 1pt (0.36mm)
    5. Use a coarse hatching pattern rather than shading for tints in graphs
    6. Figures divided into parts should be labeled with a lower case, bold 'a','b', et cetera, in the top left hand corner. Labeling of axes, keys and so on should be in "Title Case" with no full stop. Units must have a space between the number and the unit, and follow the nomenclature common to your field
    7. Spaces, not commas should be used to separate thousands
    8. Colour should be distinct when being used as an identifying tool

    Tables
These should be labeled sequentially as Table 1, Table 2, etc. Each table should be typed on a separate page, numbered, titled, and cited in the text. Reference to table footnotes should be made by means of Arabic numerals. Tables should not duplicate the content of the text. They should consist of at least two columns; columns should always have headings. Authors should ensure that the data in tables are consistent with those cited in the relevant papers in the text, totals add up correctly, and percentages have been calculated correctly. Unlike figures or images, tables may be embedded into the word processing software if necessary, or supplied as separate electronic files.

    Figures
Figures and images should also be labeled sequentially, numbered, and cited in the text. Symbols, lettering, and numbering should be clear and large enough to be legible after the figure has been reduced. Figure legends should be printed, double spaced, on a separate sheet titled ?Titles and legends to figures?. Color figures can be reproduced if necessary, but the authors will be expected to contribute towards the cost of publication. A quote will be supplied on acceptance of your paper. Figures should be referred to specifically in the text of the paper but not embedded with the text. The use of ?three-dimensional? histograms is strongly discouraged when the addition of the third dimension gives no extra information. Please do not prepare figures/images using Powerpoint software, as that is unsuitable for production. If a table or figure has been published before, the authors must obtain written permission to reproduce the material in both print and electronic formats from the copyright owner and submit it with the manuscript. This follows for quotes, illustrations, tables and other materials taken from previously published works not in the public domain. The original source should be cited in the figure caption or table footnote.

    Quality requirements for Figures

Graphs and Line Illustrations in Grayscale 600dpi
    Photographs/Halftones (Grayscale) 300dpi minimum
Colour Illustrations in split CMYK 400dpi

      Artwork Guidelines

Detailed guidelines for submitting artwork can be found by downloading the guidelines PDF. Using the guidelines, please submit production quality artwork with your initial online submission. A JPEG prepared using Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Freehand, CorelDraw (or similar industry software) is preferable. Many applications have options to save files as JPEGs, but it is worth noting that sometimes they are only saved at 72dpi, whereas we require 300-600dpi. Following the peer review process, if your paper is accepted for publication, we will not require the artwork to be resubmitted if you have followed the guidelines.

      File Formats

File formats for manuscript files, figures and tables that are acceptable for our electronic manuscript submission process are given on the online forms. Further advice on filetypes is also available from the 'Tips' webpage. As a rule of thumb, you should stick to high quality JPEG or TIFF files for figures/images, a common word processing package (like Microsoft Word) for the text, and either embed tables converted into images at the end of your Word document, or as separate files in which ever program you used to generate them. If you submit raw data, this can be done in Excel, or tab/comma delimited format.

      If your files are large...

...or your Internet connection is slow (28kbps or below) you may wish to submit low quality artwork for peer review purposes. High quality artwork will then be requested if your paper is accepted. This may be sent as an email attachment or by post on CD-ROM (600MB), ZIP (100-200MB), 3.5? floppy (1.44MB), or 5.25? floppy (1.2MB). At that stage, you should email our journal office for the correct address.

      Proofs
The author will have the opportunity to review and approve page proofs of an accepted article before it is published. To be included, all corrections must be kept to a minimum and returned by the deadline provided (usually 48 hours).

      Offprints
Offprints may be ordered using the form accompanying the proof.

      Page Charges
Manuscripts accepted for publication in Cancer Gene Therapy will incur a page charge of ?0 (US $75) per printed page to cover, in part, the cost of publication.

      Licence to Publish
On acceptance, or once a decision has been made on the paper, the author will be sent a Licence to Publish form. This must be downloaded, printed off, signed, and faxed back to the Editorial Office before publication of the manuscript. Contact details will come with the form.

      Process for Manuscript Submission

      Starting

Please make sure you have gathered all the required manuscript information listed above BEFORE starting the submission process. The manuscript submission process starts by pressing the "Submit Manuscript" link on your "Home" page.

The manuscript submission process is broken down into a series of screens which gather detailed information about your manuscript and allow you to upload the pertinent text and figure/image files. The screens run in this order:

      1. A form asking for author details, the manuscript title, abstract, other associated manuscript information and types/number of files to be submitted.
      2. A screen asking for the actual file locations (via an open file dialogue). You will be able to browse for the relevant files on your computer or disk. After completing this screen, your files will be uploaded to our server.
      3. A completion screen that will provide you with a unique manuscript number for your submission.
      4. An approval screen which will allow you to verify that your manuscript has been uploaded and the files converted correctly to PDF format. You will need to approve each converted file in turn to complete your manuscript submission.

*Please note that we do ask you, on the submission form, for the names of reviewers to exclude. This field is for you to specify individuals whom you feel should NOT peer review your manuscript. The editors may respect your request to exclude these reviewers, unless the number of people exluded is considered excessive. Please note that we can honor requests to exclude named individuals only, not institutions (e.g. Harvard University), groups (e.g. "anyone who has ever worked with Dr. Smith") or countries. It is not necessary to give a reason for excluding a reviewer.

You will need to have the following details for each author before commencing online submission. Items in parenthesis may not be compulsory for co-authors:

    • Email Addresses
    • First and Last Names
    • Institution
    • (Full Postal Address)
    • (Work Telephone Numbers)
    • (Fax Number)

    • In addition, all Manuscript details:
      • Covering Letter
      • Title and Running Title (you may copy and paste this from your manuscript)
      • Abstract (you may copy and paste this from your manuscript)
      • Manuscript files in Word, WordPerfect, Text, or RTF format.
      • Figures/Images in external files in TIFF, or JPG in either grayscale or CMYK colour, not in RGB.
      • Tables in Excel, TIFF or JPEG, or embedded with the text of the Word/WordPerfect/RTF format manuscript (embedding is not possible if your text is being submitted in plain text/TXT).

NB Never embed the figures/images within the text from word processing software as embedded figures/images are not acceptable for production. Non-tabular supporting data submission (where applicable) must be as XLS spreadsheet.

      Adobe Acrobat

We recommend that for accessing the PDF files, best results are achieved if you have access to Adobe Acrobat Reader (4.0 or above). Should you require installation of this FREE program, please download from the link here and follow the on-screen instructions. (We recommend that on completion of installation, you amend one of the default settings. Select: File - Preferences - General, and UNCHECK Web Browser Integration. This will open PDF files in Acrobat Reader itself rather than in your browser. The amendment will not affect any functionality of either Acrobat Reader or your browser software.)

Please refrain from submitting your manuscript by email attachment or hardcopy. Do not send hardcopies to the journal office in addition to submitting online. If the site replicates your details on screen, then your paper has been successfully submitted.

Once you have submitted your files and the conversion is in progress, you may log off the Internet and come back later to check and approve the conversion. This process can take up to 5 ? 10 minutes before the PDF, created in the conversion process, is ready for approval. Please remember that your manuscript will not be submitted until you have approved the converted files.

      Getting Help

If you need additional help, you can click on the help signs spread throughout the system. A help dialogue will pop up with context sensitive help. Should further assistance be required, then please contact Cancer Gene Therapy by email or telephone (001) 858-450-5990 ext.300 , fax (001) 858-756-0482 during normal office hours (CA, USA).

      Manuscript Status

After the approval stage your manuscript is submitted. You will receive an acknowledgement email. You can check the status of your manuscript at any time in the review process by:

      1. Accessing the system with your login name and password or the link sent to you in the acknowledgement email
      2. Clicking on the link represented by your manuscript tracking number and abbreviated title.
      3. Clicking on the "Check Status" link at the bottom of the displayed page.
This procedure will display tracking information about where your manuscript is in the submission/peer review process.
