Instructions to Authors

Brain and Language publishes original research articles, case histories, theoretical articles, critical reviews, historical studies, and scholarly notes; each contribution will be relevant to human language or communication and related to any aspect of the brain or brain function. Each will have theoretical import, either formulating new hypotheses or supporting or refuting new or previously established hypotheses. The inter disciplinary focus of Brain and Language includes but is not limited to the fields of psychology, neurology, linguistics, psychiatry, speech pathology, neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, philosophy, and computer science. Manuscripts of several different types are solicited: regular articles, single or multiple case history studies, critical reviews of books of interest to the journal's readership, and short (limited to 10 typed manuscript pages) scholarly notes and discussion.

SUMBISSION OF MANUSCRIPTS

Manuscripts must be written in English and should be submitted in sextuplicate (one original and five photocopies), including six sets of good-quality figures, to:

Telephone: (619) 699-6393
Fax: (619) 699-6700
Email: b-l@elsevier.com

Language data may be given in English when clearly identifiable; otherwise, they should be transcribed into the phonetic alphabet of the International Phonetic Association (IPA). All manuscripts and journal correspondence must be submitted to the address listed above. There are no submission fees or page charges. Each manuscript should be accompanied by a letter outlining the basic findings of the paper and their significance.

Electronic Submission. Authors are requested to transmit the text and art of the manuscript in electonic form, via either computer disk, e-mail, or FTP, (ftp.elsevier.com, with username anon and password essd7acc), each time a new version is submitted. Submission as an e-mail attachment is acceptable provided that all files are included in a single archive the size of which does not exceed 2 megabytes (b-l@elsevier.com). Hard-copy printouts of the manuscript and art that exactly match the electronic file must be supplied. The manuscript will be edited according to the style of the journal, and authors must read the proofs carefully.

Only original papers will be considered. Manuscripts are accepted for review with the understanding that the same work has not been published, that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, and that its submission for publication has been approved by all of the listed authors and by the institutions where the work was carried out. If human subjects were involved in the research, authors must note in their letter of submittal that the research was conducted using appropriate ethical guidelines. Any person cited as a source of personal communication must have given her or his approval of such citation. Written authorization may be required at the Editor's discretion. Articles and any other material published in Brain and Language represent the opinions of the author(s) and should not be construed to reflect opinions of the Editor(s) and the Publisher. Manuscripts that do not meet the general criteria or standards for publication in Brain and Language will be immediately returned to the authors, without detailed review.

Authors submitting a manuscript do so on the understanding that if it is accepted for publication, copyright in the article, including the right to reproduce the article in all forms and media, shall be assigned exclusively to the Publisher. The Copyright Transfer Agreement should be signed by the appropriate person.

Authors are responsible for obtaining permissions to reprint previously published figures, tables, and other material. Letters of permission should accompany the final submission.

Preparation of Manuscript
Manuscripts should be double-spaced throughout on one side of 8.5 x 11-in. or A4 white paper. Pages should be numbered consecutively and organized as follows:

The Title Page (p. 1) should contain the article title, author(s) name(s) and affiliation(s), and the complete mailing address of the author to whom all correspondence should be sent, including e-mail address and telephone and fax numbers.

The Abstract (p. 2) must be a single paragraph that summarizes the main findings of the paper in approximately 100 words. After the abstract a list of up to 10 keywords that will be useful for indexing or searching should be included.

The Introduction should be concise as possible, without subheadings.

Materials and methods should be sufficiently detailed to enable the experiments to be reproduced.

Results and Discussion may be combined and may be organized into subheadings.

References should be cited in the text by surname of the author and the publication date in parentheses, e.g., Gall (1825) or (Gall & Spurzheim, 1810). If more than one article was published by the same author in a given year, the correct style is Broca (1861a) or (Broca, 1861b). All references must be listed alphabetically at the end of the article, beginning on a separate sheet, and typed double-spaced. Journal titles should be written out in full, not abbreviated. Only articles that have been published or are in press should be included in the references. Unpublished results or personal communications should be cited as such in the text. The following examples show style of capitalization and punctuation for journal articles, books, and chapters in edited books. Please use the following style:

Bryden, M. P. (1982). Laterality: Functional asymmetry in the intact brain. New York: Academic Press.

Hicock, G., Kirk, K., & Bellugi, U. (1998). Hemispheric organization of local- and global-level visuospatial processes in deaf signers and its relation to sign language aphasia. Brain and Language, 65, 276-286.

Sergent, J. (1986). Prolegomena to the use of the tachistoscope in neuropsychological research. Brain and Cognition, 5, 127-130.

Whitaker, H. A. (1998). Neurolinguistics from the Middle Ages to the Pre-modern Era: Historical vignettes. In B. Stemmer and H. A. Whitaker (Eds.), Handbook of Neurolinguistics (pp. 27-54). San Diego: Academic Press.

Figures
Figures should be in a finished form suitable for publication. Number figures consecutively with Arabic numerals, and indicate the top and the authors on the back of each figure. Lettering on drawings should be professional quality or generated by high-resolution computer graphics and must be large enough withstand appropriate reduction for publication. Please refer to http://authors.elsevier.com/ArtworkInstructions.html?dc=AI1 for detailed instructions on preparing electronic artwork.

Color Figures
Illustrations in color can be accepted only if the authors defray the cost. Mounted color figures must be submitted on paper or flexible board due to the nature of the reproduction process.

Tables
Tables should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals in order of appearance in the text. Type each table double-spaced on a separate page with a short descriptive title typed directly above the table and with essential footnotes below. Keep in mind the dimensions of the journal when planning the number of columns in a table. Authors should submit complex tables as camera-ready copy.

Proofs
Proofs will be sent to the corresponding author. Authors will be charged for alterations that exceed 10% of the total cost of composition.

Reprints
Twenty-five (25) reprints will be provided free of charge. Additional reprints may be ordered.
