About the journal

Bone Marrow Transplantation is published twice monthly. The Editors will consider for publication all suitable papers dealing directly or indirectly with autologous or allogeneic transplantation of haemopoietic stem cells from marrow, blood or umbilical cord in man or experimental animals. This includes experimental systems involving genetic manipulation of haemopoietic stem cells. Papers dealing with stem cell mobilization, use of haemopoietic growth factors and the charaterization of other cytokines in the transplant setting are welcome. Papers dealing with in vitro model systems are also encouraged if they have relevance in haemopoietic stem cell transplantation.

Instructions to Authors

Welcome to the electronic manuscript submission website for Bone Marrow Transplantation. The instructions below are structured so you can quickly and easily answer the following questions:

  1. Is my manuscript suitable for Bone Marrow Transplantation? (Scope + Editorial Policy)
  2. How do I format my manuscript for Bone Marrow Transplantation? (Format of Papers)
  3. How do I submit my manuscript to Bone Marrow Transplantation? (Submission of Papers)

Scope

Bone Marrow Transplantation covers all work on autologous or allogeneic transplantation of haemopoietic stem cells from marrow, blood or umbilical cord in man or experimental animals. This includes all relevant experimental systems and genetic manipulation of haemopoietic stem cells.

Editorial Policy

Bone Marrow Transplantation is published twice monthly. There are twelve issues per volume. The editors will consider for publication all suitable papers dealing directly or indirectly with autologous or allogeneic transplantation of haemopoietic stem cells in experimental animals or man. Papers dealing with in vitro model systems will also be accepted if they have obvious relevance to marrow transplantation. Papers will be sent for review to three members of the Editorial Review Board. Papers will be accepted if they contribute original material that is likely to be of interest to readers involved in the field of blood or bone marrow transplantation.

While authors are asked to write their manuscripts in English using an easily readable style, editorial assistance for authors not completely fluent in English may be available. Spelling and phraseology should conform either to standard English or to standard American usage and should be consistent throughout the paper (e.g. haematological, leukaemia, centre or hematologic, leukemia, center). A manuscript will be considered for publication on the understanding that all named authors have agreed to its submission and that if accepted it will not be later published in the same or similar form in any language without the consent of the publishers. The editors also encourage submission of review articles, case reports, reports of meetings, book reviews and correspondence.

The editors will consider for publication manuscripts containing data already in press elsewhere or published previously in unreviewed format, such as abstracts or camera-ready papers for proceedings of scientific meetings. The new manuscript should differ from the one previously published and should not contain any identical Figures or Tables. It will be the responsibility of the senior author to bring to the editor's attention details of previous publications and if necessary to enclose relevant photocopies for the use of referees. The existence of such related paper(s) (published or in press) should be mentioned as a footnote to the manuscript or documented with appropriate references. The editorial decision will take account of the originality of the work submitted for publication and the extent to which readers of Bone Marrow Transplantation may be expected to have access to the book or journal in which the associated paper(s) have appeared.

A manuscript will be considered for publication on the understanding that:

  1. all named authors have agreed to its submission
  2. it is not currently being considered for publication by another journal
  3. if the paper is accepted it will not subsequently be published in the same or similar form in any language without the consent of publishers

Format of Papers

Preparation of manuscripts Manuscripts should be typed double-spaced with a wide margin using one side of the paper only. Any special points should be emphasised in the covering letter from the submitting author. The paper should be arranged as follows:

  1. Title page (excluding acknowledgements)
  2. Summary and keywords
  3. Introduction
  4. Materials (or Patients) and methods
  5. Results
  6. Discussion
  7. Acknowledgements
  8. References
  9. Tables
  10. Figures

The title page should bear the title of the paper, the full names of the authors and the affiliations, together with the name, full postal address, and telephone, fax and e-mail address of the author to whom correspondence and reprint requests are to be sent. (This information is also asked for on the electronic submission form). The running title should consist of not more than 50 letters and spaces. Three to six keywords should be included. The Summary should not exceed 200 words. It should be written in a style that conveys the essential message of the paper in abbreviated form. The Introduction should assume that the reader is knowledgeable in the field and should therefore be as brief as possible. In the Materials and Methods section, methods that have been published in detail elsewhere should not be described in detail. SI units (e.g. platelets x 109/1) should be used throughout the text. References, tables and figures should be prepared according to the guidelines given below.

Authors are asked to include with the copies of their manuscript a short covering letter that draws the editors' attention to any relevant points. The letter should be signed by the corresponding author and include telephone number and fax number and email address.

Standard abbreviations Because the majority of readers will have experience in haematology and/or bone marrow transplantation, the journal will accept papers which use certain standard abbreviations, such as BMT, SAA or AML, without definition in the summary or in the text. However, authors are not obliged to omit the definitions. A list of standard abbreviations appears in each issue, usually following these 'Instructions for Contributors'. Non-standard abbreviations should be defined in full at their first usage in the Summary and again at the first usage in the text, in the conventional manner.

Drug Dosages Authors are asked to take special care when specifying dosages of cytotoxic drugs. Abbreviations that are not internationally agreed, such as "bid" or "q12h", should be avoided. The risk of misinterpretation is reduced if the total dose or the total number of doses is specified in parentheses. Examples of recommended phraseology are:

  • Busulphan 4 mg/kg p.o. in divided doses daily for 4 days (total dose 16 mg/kg)
  • Cyclophosphamide 60 mg/kg once daily i.v. on days 1 & 2 (total dose 120 mg/kg)
  • Cytarabine 100 mg/m2 twice daily. i.v. for 4 consecutive days (total 8 doses)
  • Cytarabine 100 mg/m2 by continuous i.v. infusion over 12 hours for 5 consecutive days (total 10 doses)
  • Nevertheless readers are reminded that the ultimate responsibility for ensuring that any drug dosage is correct rests firmly with the clinician who prescribes the drug.

References Only papers closely related to the author's work should be cited. Exhaustive lists should be avoided. References should follow the Vancouver format. In the text they should appear as numbers starting at 1. At the end of the paper they should be listed (double-spaced) in numerical order corresponding to the order of citation in the text. All authors should be quoted for papers with up to four authors; for papers with more than four authors, the first three only should be quoted followed by et al. Abbreviations for titles of medical periodicals should conform to those used in the latest edition of Index Medicus. The first and last page numbers for each reference should be provided. Abstracts and letters must be identified as such. Papers in press and papers already submitted for publication may be included in the list of references. No citation is required for work that is not yet submitted for publication.

Personal communications must be allocated a number and included in the list of references in the usual way or simply referred to in the text; the authors may choose which method to use. In either case authors must obtain permission from the individual concerned to quote his/her unpublished work.

Format of Artwork As the electronic submission will provide the basic material for typesetting, it is important that papers are prepared in the general editorial style of the journal.

    1. Use the same sans serif typeface for all figures (Arial, Univers...) at 12pt
    2. Do not make rules thinner than 1pt (0.36mm)
    3. Use a coarse hatching pattern rather than shading for tints in graphs
    4. Figures divided into parts should be labelled with a lower case, bold 'a','b', et cetera, in the top left hand corner. Labelling of axes, keys and so on should be in "Title Case" with no full stop. Units must have a space between the number and the unit, and follow the nomenclature common to your field
    5. Spaces, not commas should be used to separate thousands
    6. Unusual units or abbreviations should be spelt out in full, or defined in the legend
    7. Colour should be distinct when being used as an identifying tool
    8. Ensure double spacing with a wide margin

Artwork Guidelines Detailed guidelines for submitting artwork can be found by downloading the guidelines PDF. Using the guidelines, please submit production quality artwork with your initial online submission. A JPEG prepared using Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Freehand, CorelDraw (or similar industry software) is preferable. Many applications have options to save files as JPEGs, but it is worth noting that sometimes they are only saved at 72dpi, whereas we require 300-600dpi. Following the peer review process, if your paper is accepted for publication, we will not require the artwork to be resubmitted if you have followed the guidelines.

Tables Each table should be numbered consecutively with an Arabic numeral. Each should have a separate caption or title. Methods not described in the text and abbreviations should be explained at the foot of the Table. Tables should be referred to specifically in the text of the paper. Authors should ensure that the data in tables are consistent with those cited in the relevant papers in the text, totals add up correctly, and percentages have been calculated correctly. Unlike figures or images, tables may be embedded into the word processing software if necessary, or supplied as separate electronic files.

Figures Figures should be numbered consecutively and assigned Arabic numerials. Each figure should have a title and a detailed legend, as appropriate, listed consecutively in a separate file titled ?Titles and legends to figures?. Figures should be referred to specifically in the text of the paper but not embedded in-line with the text. The use of ?three-dimensional? histograms is strongly discouraged when the addition of the third dimension gives no extra information. Please do not prepare figures/images using Powerpoint software, as that is unsuitable for production. If a table or figure has been published before, the authors must obtain written permission to reproduce the material in both print and electronic formats from the copyright owner and submit it with the manuscript.

Colour figures can be reproduced if necessary, but the authors will be expected to contribute towards the cost of publication. A quote will be supplied on acceptance of your paper. Please do not submit hardcopy photographs.

File Formats File formats for manuscript files, figures and tables that are acceptable for our electronic manuscript submission process are given on the online forms. Further advice on filetypes is also available from the 'Tips' webpage. As a rule of thumb, you should stick to high quality JPEG or TIFF files for figures/images, a common word processing package (like Microsoft Word) for the text, and either embed tables converted into images at the end of your Word document, or as separate files in which ever program you used to generate them. If you submit raw data, this can be done in Excel, or tab/comma delimited format.

    Quality requirements for Figures

Graphs and Line Illustrations in Grayscale 600dpi
    Photographs/Halftones (Grayscale) 300dpi minimum
Colour Illustrations in split CMYK 400dpi

If your files are quite large... If you know that your Internet connection is slow (28kbps or below) you may wish to submit low quality artwork for peer review purposes. High quality artwork will then be requested if your paper is accepted. This may be sent as an email attachment or by post on CD-ROM (600MB), ZIP (100-200MB), 3.5? floppy (1.44MB), or 5.25? floppy (1.2MB). At that stage, you should Email our journal office for the correct address.

      Editorials or Brief Reviews
Editorials or Brief Reviews will be solicited by the editors but suggestions for such material will be very welcome. Please email the journal office.

      Solicited Mini Reviews
Authors of commissioned mini-reviews are requested to contact the Review Editor for further submission instructions. This does not apply to unsolicited reviews. Please contact Dr Hilliard Lazarus

      Case Reports
The editor will consider for publication Case Reports that illustrate points not previously reported in the literature. They should not exceed two printed pages in length; the Summary should not exceed 100 words. The number of references should not exceed ten.

      Correspondence
Correspondence is encouraged. They may deal with material in published papers or they may raise new issues. In the former case the Editors may send the letter first to the authors of the original paper so that their comments may be published at the same time as the letter.

      Submission of Papers

The first thing you need to do, if you have not done so already, is register for an account. After this, please consult the instructions below to enable you to submit your article through our secure server.

For optimum performance, we recommend that your browser should be either Netscape 4.7 or above, or Internet Explorer 5.0 and above.

Please be sure that your browser is set to accept cookies. Our tracking system requires cookies for proper operation. (If you have Windows XP the defaults will need changing. For more details on this, please refer to the 'Tips' function on this site.)

Please refrain from submitting your manuscript by email attachment. If the site replicates your details on screen, then your paper has been successfully submitted.

Once you have submitted your files and the conversion is in progress, you may log off the Internet and come back later to check and approve the conversion. This process can take up to 5 ? 10 minutes before the PDF, created in the conversion process, is ready for approval. Please remember that your manuscript will not be submitted until you have approved the converted files.

Navigating the System When you first access our tracking system, you will be taken to your ?Home? page, where different categories of ?tasks? are listed. If you are required to perform a pending action item or task, there will be a red arrow next to a 'Manuscript' link. Throughout the system, red arrows reflect pending action items which you should address. If there are no red arrows visible on your ?Home? page, then you are finished and have no outstanding tasks to complete.

At any time please press HOME to go to the submission home page.

Process for Manuscript Submission The manuscript submission process is broken down into a series of 4 screens which gather detailed information about your manuscript and allow you to upload the pertinent text and figure/image files. The screens run in this order:

      1. A form asking for author details, the manuscript title, abstract, other associated manuscript information and types/number of files to be submitted.
      2. A screen asking for the actual file locations (via an open file dialogue). You will be able to browse for the relevant files on your computer or disk. After completing this screen, your files will be uploaded to our server.
      3. A completion screen that will provide you with a unique manuscript number for your submission.
      4. An approval screen which will allow you to verify that your manuscript has been uploaded and the files converted correctly to PDF format. You will need to approve each converted file in turn to complete your manuscript submission.

You will need to have the following details for all authors before commencing online submission. Items in parenthesis may not be compulsory for co-authors:

      • Email Addresses
      • First and Last Names
      • Institution
      • (Full Postal Address)
      • (Work Telephone Numbers)

      In addition, all Manuscript details:
      • Covering Letter
      • Title and Running Title (you may copy and paste this from your manuscript)
      • Abstract (you may copy and paste this from your manuscript)
      • Manuscript files in Word, WordPerfect, Text, or RTF format.
      • Figures/Images in external files in TIFF, or JPG in either grayscale or CMYK colour, not in RGB.
      • Tables in Excel, TIFF or JPEG, or embedded with the text of the Word/WordPerfect/RTF format manuscript (embedding is not possible if your text is being submitted in plain text/TXT).

NB Never embed the figures/images within the text from word processing software as embedded figures/images are not acceptable for production. Non-tabular supporting data submission (where applicable) must be as XLS spreadsheet.

      Adobe Acrobat

We recommend that for accessing the PDF files, best results are achieved if you have access to Adobe Acrobat Reader (4.0 or above). Should you require installation of this FREE program, please download from the link here and follow the on-screen instructions. (We recommend that on completion of installation, you amend one of the default settings. Select: File - Preferences - General, and UNCHECK Web Browser Integration. This will open PDF files in Acrobat Reader itself rather than in your browser. The amendment will not affect any functionality of either Acrobat Reader or your browser software.)

Getting Help If you need additional help, you can click on the help signs spread throughout the system. A help dialogue will pop up with context sensitive help. Should further assistance be required, then please contact Bone Marrow Transplantation by email or telephone (+44) (0)20 8383 3233 during normal office hours (UK).

Manuscript Status After you approve your manuscript it is submitted and you will receive an acknowledgement email. You can check the status of your manuscript at any time in the review process by:

      1. Accessing the system with your password or link sent to you in the acknowledgement email
      2. Clicking on the link represented by your manuscript tracking number and abbreviated title.
      3. Clicking on the "Check Status" link at the bottom of the displayed page.
This procedure will display tracking information about where your manuscript is in the submission/peer review process.

Proofs PDF proof(s) will be sent to the principal author who should read it carefully for errors. Corrected proofs must be returned to the Senior Editor within 48 hours of receipt. Major alterations to the text cannot be accepted at this stage. The principal author must complete and return to the Publisher the Copyright Assignment forms enclosed with the proofs.

Offprints Twenty-five offprints will be supplied free of charge to the principal author. Additional offprints may be ordered on the form accompanying the proofs. The charges are necessarily higher if orders for reprints are received after the issue has gone to press.
