About the journal

Biological Conservation has as its main purpose the widest dissemination of original papers dealing with the preservation of wildlife and the conservation or wise use of biological and allied natural resources. It is concerned with plants and animals and their habitats in a changing and increasingly man-dominated biosphere - in fresh and salt waters as well as on land and in the atmosphere. Biological Conservation publishes field studies, analytical and modelling studies and review articles. While its main basis is ecological the journal aims at fostering other relevant aspects of biological conservation and hopes thereby to encourage more research and publication of work which contributes to our knowledge and understanding of wildlife communities and their value to mankind.
The journal's coverage of the discipline of conservation ecology is relevant to universities and research institutes while the emphasis on the practical application of the research results is important to all land managers, from those dealing with landscape design problems to those whose concern is nature reserve management.

Instructions to Authors

Submission of papers
Submission of a manuscript implies that it is not being considered contemporaneously for publication elsewhere. Submission of a multi-authored manuscript implies the consent of all the participating authors. Submission of a manuscript must be accompanied by a covering letter stating that it is original work, that it is not being submitted elsewhere, that all authors agree with the contents and to the submission, and where necessary all appropriate ethics and other approvals were obtained for the research. All papers will be independently refereed.

Contributors from North, South and Central America should submit their papers to Dr M. W. Schwartz, Department of Environmental Sciences and Policy, University of California, One Shields Avenue, Davis, CA 95616-8576, USA.

Contributors from the Indo-Pacific region, including Australia and New Zealand should submit their papers to Dr D. A. Saunders, c/o CSIRO Sustainable Ecosystems, GPO Box 284, Canberra, ACT 2601, Australia.

Contributors from UK, Europe, Africa and Central Asia should submit their papers to Dr. R. Marrs, School of Biological Science (Derby Building), University of Liverpool, PO Box 147, Liverpool L69 3PX, UK or to Dr. A.S. Pullin, School of Biosciences, University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham B15 2TT, UK.

Types of contributions
Original papers on topics of conservation interest; review articles; short reports; announcements; book reviews.

The journal adopts a strict policy of only accepting papers that fit the Aims and Scope of the journal. The paper must have a clear conservation message: Is there a significant contribution to our ability to undertake effective action?

Manuscripts
Three copies should be provided, in double-spaced typing on pages of uniform size, with a wide margin at the left. Generally, the size of the manuscript should not exceed 10,000 words or about 20 printed pages. Each paper should be provided with an Abstract of about 200--250 words, reporting concisely on the purpose and results of the paper, and with five keywords for use by Abstract services.
Authors should consult an issue of the journal for style and layout. The Editors reserve the right to adjust style to certain standards of uniformity.
The SI system should be used for all scientific and laboratory data; if, in certain instances, it is necessary to quote other units, these should be added in parentheses. All variables should be italic; p for significance; n for number. Use %, not percent.
All scientific names should be italic, no parentheses. Common names in lower-case except proper nouns. All common names must be followed by a scientific name in parentheses.
Tables, references and legends to illustrations should be typed on separate sheets and placed at the end of the paper. Footnotes should be avoided if they contain information which could equally well be included in the text.

Disks
Please submit a disk with the initial submission of the manuscript. The file on disk should correspond exactly to the hard copy. The operating system and the word-processor used should be specified clearly. Word is the preferred format, although other formats can be used.
Illustrations or chemical structures in electronic format may be supplied provided that the file format and the program used to produce them is clearly indicated and that a hard copy is also supplied. More detailed guidelines and further information are available from the publisher.

References
References to published work should be indicated at the appropriate place in the text, according to the Harvard system (i.e. using author(s) name(s) and date), with a reference list, in alphabetical order, at the end of the paper. The list should give name(s) and initial(s) of author(s), the year of publication and the exact title of the paper or book. For journals there should follow the journal title, volume number, and initial and final page numbers of article. For books there should follow the name(s) of the editor(s) (if appropriate), the name of the publisher and the town and year of publication. Where appropriate, initial and final page numbers should also be quoted. All references in this list should be indicated at some point in the text and vice versa. In the references, the "&" should always be replaced by "and". Unpublished reports may be included in the References if available for consultation by readers; they should include the name of the organisation and a brief address.

Illustrations
The original and two copies, which may be of a reduced size, of each illustration should be provided. Line drawings may be submitted in any medium providing that the image is black and very sharp. They should preferably all require the same degree of reduction; large diagrams, more than four times final size, are discouraged due to handling difficulties. Lettering should be large enough to be legible after reduction of the illustration to fit in either one or two columns (ideally 7pt lettering after reduction). Photographs should be submitted as contrasting black-and-white prints on glossy paper. Each illustration must be clearly numbered and the name(s) of the author(s) of the paper written on the reverse side.

Colour Illustrations
Submit colour illustrations preferably in electronic format, or otherwise as original photographs, high-quality computer prints or transparencies, close to the size expected in publication, or as 35 mm slides. Polaroid colour prints are not suitable. If, together with your accepted article, you submit usable colour figures then Elsevier will ensure, at no additional charge, that these figures will appear in colour on the web (e.g., ScienceDirect and other sites) regardless of whether or not these illustrations are reproduced in colour in the printed version. For colour reproduction in print, you will receive information regarding the costs from Elsevier after receipt of your accepted article. For further information on the preparation of electronic artwork, please see http://authors.elsevier.com/artwork.

Please note: Because of technical complications which can arise by converting colour figures to 'grey scale' (for the printed version should you not opt for colour in print) please submit in addition usable black and white prints corresponding to all the colour illustrations.

Proofs
Proofs will be sent to the author (first-named author if no corresponding author is identified on multi-authored papers) by PDF wherever possible and should be returned within 48 hours of receipt, preferably by e-mail. Corrections should be restricted to typesetting errors; any other amendments made may be charged to the author. Any queries should be answered in full. Elsevier will do everything possible to get your article corrected and published as quickly as possible. Therefore, it is important to ensure that all of your corrections are returned to us in one all-inclusive e-mail or fax. Subsequent additional corrections will not be possible, so please ensure that your first communication is complete. Should you choose to mail your corrections, please return them to: Log-in Department, Elsevier Science, Stover Court, Bampfylde Street, Exeter, Devon EX1 2AH, UK.

Page charges and offprints
There will be no page charges. Twenty-five offprints of each paper will be supplied free of charge. Additional copies can be ordered at current printing prices.

Colour charges Authors will be charged for including colour illustrations at the following rates and are encouraged only to consider colour if necessary for clarity or comprehension: 1st page: Euro 350 / USD 350 Every 2nd page: Euro 175 / USD 175 (Prices per October 2003).

Copyright guidelines
All authors must sign the `Transfer of Copyright' agreement before the article can be published. This transfer agreement enables Elsevier Science Ltd to protect the copyrighted material for the authors, but does not relinquish the author's proprietary rights. The copyright transfer covers the exclusive rights to reproduce and distribute the article, including reprints, photographic reproductions, microform or any other reproductions of similar nature and translations, and includes the right to adapt the article for use in conjunction with computer systems and programs, including reproduction or publication in machine-readable form and incorporation in retrieval systems. Authors are responsible for obtaining from the copyright holder permission to reproduce any figures for which copyright exists.

Conflicts of Interest
To allow scientists, the public, and policy makers to make more informed judgements about published research, this journal adopts a strong policy on conflicts of interest and disclosure. Authors should acknowledge all sources of funding and any direct financial benefits that could result from publication. Editors likewise require referees to disclosure current or recent association with authors and other special interest in this work.

Author Enquiries
Authors can keep a track on the progress of their accepted article, and set up e-mail alerts informing them of changes to their manuscript's status, by using the "Track a Paper" feature of Elsevier's Author Gateway (http://authors.elsevier.com). Contact details for questions arising after acceptance of an article, especially those relating to proofs, are provided when an article is accepted for publication.
