Instructions to Authors

1 General Asian Journal of Andrology (AJA) is the official publication of the Asian Society of Andrology sponsored by the Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The Journal has been included in 11 international indexing systems, including BIOSIS, CAB Abstracts, CAB Health, Chemical Abstracts, Current Contents/Clinical Medicine, EMBASE, Index Medicus, MEDLINE, PASCAL, Research Alert, and SCI Expanded. The Impact Factor is 0.827 and ranks third among the 5 international andrology journals.
The Journal invites concise reports of original research on all areas of andrology, both experimental and clinical, including modern, traditional and epidemiological from any part of the world. Review articles will be published by invitation of the Editor-in-Chief, but mini-reviews (no more than 4 printed pages) based primarily on author’s own research of internationally important topics are accepted. Short communications and letters to the editor are also welcome. Authors are requested to submit a covering letter indicating that their manuscript represents original unpublished material that has not been and will not be published elsewhere. This restriction does not apply to results published as abstracts of communications, letters to editors or as preliminary reports. By submitting a manuscript the authors warrant that all necessary permissions have been obtained.
The submission of the manuscript by authors means that they automatically agree to assign exclusive copyright to the AJA in case the manuscript is accepted for publication. The work should not be published elsewhere in any forms without the written permission of the AJA. All rights of the articles published in the AJA are reserved. No part of this publication may be reproduced, translated or transmitted in any form or by any means, e.g., electronic, mechanical or otherwise, without permission from the AJA.
Human experiments should be performed only in accordance with the ethical standards provided by the responsible committee of the institution or with the Helsinki Declaration. Animal experiments should follow the instructions for the care and use provided by the institution.

2 Authors should have participated sufficiently in the work to take public responsibility for the content. Written approval signed by all authors should be presented with the manuscript.

3 Manuscript should be typed on one side of A4 (21 cm × 29.7 cm) papers with double space and wide margins. The manuscript should be arranged in the following order: (1) title page, (2) Keywords, (3) Abstract, (4) Corresponding author (5) Acknowledgments, (6) Introduction, (7) Materials and methods, (8) Results, (9) Discussion, (10) References, (11) tables, (12) legends to figures, (13) figures. Manuscripts are not insured against loss or damage.

4 Title page should contain, on separate lines, the title of the manuscript, a running title of no more than 40 letters, name(s) and affiliation(s) of author(s), and the mailing address, telephone and fax numbers, and e-mail address for the corresponding author. The title must be informative, specific, and concise. Serialization of articles into parts is not permitted; such articles may be submitted independently with self-sufficient titles.

5 Keywords and Abstract Provide 3-10 key words or phrases for indexing purposes, using terms from the latest Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) list of Index Medicus. If appropriate MeSH terms are not available, other suitable terms may be used. Full-length submissions should include an abstract of up to 250 words in structured form, consisting of Aim, Methods, Results, and Conclusion.

6 Text The text should include the following sections: Introduction summarizes the rationale and gives a concise research background (not an exhaustive review), and states with one sentence the objective of the study. Materials and methods provide technical information of the study. Specifications (including the manufacturer and the country) should be given for main drugs, chemicals, and instruments. Indicate statistical methods used and identify statistical significance by superscripts (a, b, and c) behind the data (aP>0.05, bP<0.05, cP<0.01). Results are the findings, using the SI units. In a sample, the effective digits are determined by the variation within the sample, i.e, one-third of the standard deviation. Digits may be separated into groups of three by a small space. Discussion deals with the interpretation of the results and their comparison with those of other studies. Do not repeat the results and do not review the literature. End with a brief conclusion linking to the objective of the study.
Authors should consult a recent issue of AJA to get familiar with the general layout and various elements in an article. Lettering the headings in decimal pattern as: 1 1.1 1.1.1 etc.

7 Use of abbreviations, except for units of measure, is discouraged. At the first appearance in the abstract and the text, abbreviations should be preceded by words for which they stand.

8 Tables must be concise and cited consecutively by Arabic numerals in the text (Table 1, Table 2, etc.). Each table should be typed on a separate sheet. The title of the table should clearly indicate the nature of the contents and sufficient detail should be included in the footnote to facilitate interpretation without reference to the text. Use horizontal rules only.

9 Figures (photographs, drawings, diagrams and charts) should be clear, easily legible and cited consecutively by Arabic numerals in the text (Figure 1, Figure 2, etc.), preferably 1.5 to 2 times their final reproduced size. For line work, submit black-ink drawings of professional quality; broader lines should be drawn for curves than for the axes. Micrographs or other glossy photographs must be of the highest quality. Use standard symbols: Freehand or typewritten lettering is unacceptable. If a figure comprises more than one glossy photograph, these should be assembled in one envelope without mounting and should be marked a, b, c, etc. Figure legends should be typed on a separate sheet. Legends should contain sufficient detail to permit figure interpretation without reference to the text. Scale markers should be indicated in the photographs. All figures should be lightly labeled with a soft pencil on the back to indicate the figure number, top margin and the corresponding author. Color plates are also welcome.

10 References The Journal advocates the citation of new papers and old references are better to be replaced by updated ones. Except for review articles, the number of references cited should be generally within 20. The authors are responsible for the correctness of references. References are numbered consecutively in the order in which they appear in the text. Citations should be superscript with parentheses and should be in front of the period or comma at the end of the sentence/clause. All references should be cited. Unpublished data, personal communications, abstracts at meetings and manuscripts submitted for publication are not acceptable as references. Information from such sources may be cited in the text with the sources given in parentheses. References should be listed in numerical order in the Reference section. Journal title should be abbreviated according to the ¡°List of Journal Indexed¡± in Index Medicus or MEDLINE. Please note that no periods are used after the author‘s  initials or journal abbreviations. A period is used at the end of each reference. The type and punctuation of references consistent with the  Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals promulgated by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors are illustrated as follows:
