About the journal

The journal is primarily devoted to publishing papers which treat problems in applied areas.
The problems may embrace a wide diversity of areas, such as

physical, chemical, biochemical, environmental topics, and optimum design, as well as stochastic finance.

The theories for solving problems include, in addition to deterministic and stochastic optimization: partial differential equations dealing with applied problems such as turbulence, homogenization; and stochastic differential equations occurring in filtering theory and in biology. The journal features also critical surveys of new advances in theory and application.

Submission of Manuscripts

Manuscripts can be sent to the Editor

Prof. Paul Dupuis
Editor, Applied Mathematics and Optimization
Division of Applied Mathematics
Brown University
P.O. Box F
182 George Street
Providence, RI 02912

e-mail: AMO@dam.brown.edu

or to one of the Associate Editors listed on the back of the journal and on the journal¡¯s web page. When submission is made directly to an Associate Editor a copy of the paper must also be sent at that time to the Editor. A manuscript is not considered as accepted for review until the Editor has received a copy.

Original papers only will be considered. Manuscripts are accepted for review with the understanding that the same work has not been published and that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere. If manuscript is submitted in hard copy only, please send a total of four copies of the text and illustrations.

Applied Mathematics and Optimization strongly encourages electronic submission of manuscripts for both the review and production phases. For initial submissions, we prefer electronic files that can be easily printed and forwarded to editorial board members and referees: PDF, PostScript, or TeX, in that order. Very large files (over 1MB) should be sent as .zip files. Please include all files necessary for the printing of the paper. When a paper is submitted electronically, a hard copy printout of the text and illustrations should be mailed to the Editor. Ancillary electronic materials should be submitted to the Editor along with the article and are subject to review and approval of the Editorial office. See below for appropriate formats for publication of ancillary electronic materials.

Upon acceptance of manuscripts, authors will be promptly notified. Final copies of the paper should then be sent to the Editor. In order to facilitate the publication process authors are strongly encouraged to prepare their articles in some form of TeX. Along with TeX source files, we request the macro files for the text. For the illustrations we request separate .tif or .eps files. Two hard copy printouts of the text and illustrations should accompany the electronic files.

Copyright and Permissions

All authors will be required to sign a copyright transfer agreement in order for the article to be published. This form must accompany the final article sent to the Editor. All of the authors of a manuscript must sign this agreement, available for download or from the Editorial office. Authors are responsible for obtaining permissions to reprint previously published figures, tables, and other material. Letters of permission should accompany the final submission.

Digital Object Identifier

Springer-Verlag assigns a unique digital object identifier (DOI) to every article it publishes. The DOI is assigned after the article has been submitted by the author for publication, and continues throughout the lifetime of the article, and can thus be used to obtain information on the article during the production process, to find the article on the Internet, and to cite the article in references if published online in advance of print. See below for an example of how to cite DOIs in references. It is important to include the DOI in references for articles published online where volume and page numbers are not available.

Proofs

Page proofs will be sent to the corresponding author for review and correction. Proofs should be returned within 48 hours (specific instructions will accompany the proof) to ensure timely publication. Articles may not be rewritten at the proof stage; only corrections of errors may be made.

Guidelines for Electronically Produced Illustrations for Print

General

Send illustrations separately from the text (i.e. files should not be integrated with the text files). Always send printouts of all illustrations.

Vector (line) Graphics

Vector graphics exported from a drawing program should be stored in EPS format.

Suitable drawing program: Adobe Illustrator. For simple line art the following drawing programs are also acceptable: Corel Draw, Freehand, Canvas.

No rules narrower than .25 pt.

No gray screens paler than 15% or darker than 60%.

Screens meant to be differentiated from one another must differ by at least 15%.

Spreadsheet/Presentation Graphics

Most presentation programs (Excel, PowerPoint, Freelance) produce data that cannot be stored in an EPS format. Therefore graphics produced by these programs cannot be used for print.

Halftone Illustrations

Black & white and color illustrations should be saved in TIFF format.

Illustrations should be created using Adobe Photoshop whenever possible.

Scans*

Scanned reproductions of black and white photographs should be provided as 300 ppi TIFF files.

Scanned color illustrations should be provided as TIFF files scanned at a minimum of 300 ppi with a 24-bit color depth.

Line art should be provided as TIFF files at 600 ppi.

* We do prefer having the original art as our printers have drum scanners which allow for better reproduction of critical medical halftones.

Graphics from Videos

Separate files should be prepared for frames from a video that are to be printed in the journal. When preparing these files you should follow the same rules as listed under Halftone Illustrations.

Guidelines for Electronically Produced Illustrations for ONLINE

Video

Quicktime (.mov) is the preferred format, but .rm, .avi, .mpg, etc. are acceptable.

No video file should be larger than 2MB. To decrease the size of your file, consider changing one or more of the following variables: frame speed, number of colors/greys, viewing size (in pixels), or compression. Video is subject to Editorial review and approval.
