About the journal

 Applied Mathematical Modelling

Applied Mathematical Modelling is a monthly publication focusing on research related to the mathematical modelling of engineering and environmental processes, manufacturing, and industrial systems. A significant emerging area of research activity involves multiphysics processes, and contributions in this area are particularly encouraged.
This influential publication covers a wide spectrum of subjects including heat transfer, fluid mechanics, CFD, and transport phenomena; solid mechanics and mechanics of metals; electromagnets and MHD; reliability modelling and system optimization; finite volume, finite element, and boundary element procedures; decision sciences in an industrial and manufacturing context; civil engineering systems and structures; mineral and energy resources; relevant software engineering issues associated with CAD and CAE; and materials and metallurgical engineering.

Instructions to Authors

Applied Mathematical Modelling welcomes contributions on research related to the mathematical modelling of engineering and environmental processes, manufacturing and industrial systems. A significant emerging area of research activity involves multi-physics processes, and contributions in this area are particularly encouraged.

Applied Mathematical Modelling is aimed at reflecting the advances of what is a very fast moving area of endeavor. All engineering organizations make extensive use of computational models in the design, analysis, optimization and control of processes or systems. The objective of the journal is to serve the needs of the mathematical modelling community by acting as the focus for the communication of research results, reviews of progress and discussions of issues of emerging interest to those in this rapidly expanding field.

Contributions are classified as research papers and review articles. Research papers should be a record of original research and approximately 6,000 to 8,000 equivalent words in length.

Review articles are also published but normally only on invitation. Interested authors should consult the Editor before preparation of such articles.

Only work not previously published will ordinarily be accepted. If any tables or illustrations have been published elsewhere, it is the author's responsibility to secure the necessary permission from the original publisher.

Page charges are not levied by the journal.

Manuscripts submitted for publication should be submitted to:
Professor Mark Cross, Centre for Numerical Modelling and Process Analysis, University of Greenwich, Wellington Street, London SE18 6PF, UK
For complete up-to-date addresses of Editors please check the link to the Editorial Board at the beginning of these instructions.

Web Submission Site:

Authors are encouraged to submit their papers electronically by using online manuscript submission at http://www.elsubmit.com/esubmit/apm. Authors interested in online submission are requested to go to the website and upload their manuscript and its associated artwork. An electronic (PDF) proof is generated and the reviewing process is carried out using that PDF. It is crucial that all graphical and tabular elements be placed within the text, so that the PDF is suitable for reviewing. This will also allow the preferred position of placement to be indicated; however please note that due to journal conventions, it may not be possible to meet all requirements for placement of artwork. Moreover, the PDF file may be edited after acceptance to follow journal standards. Authors and editors send and receive all correspondence by email via the website and no paper correspondence is performed.

Refereeing
All contributions are studied by referees whose names are not normally disclosed to authors. On acceptance for publication papers are subject to editorial amendment. Authors are solely responsible for the factual accuracy of their papers.

Manuscripts
Authors are urged to write as concisely as possible. Three copies should be submitted, typed on one side of the paper, double spaced, with wide margins at the top and bottom and on both sides. Papers should be arranged in the following order of presentation: title of paper; names of the authors; address of the place at which the work was carried out; a self-contained synopsis (abstract) of the paper (50-200 words in length); 4-6 suggested keywords; the text; acknowledgments (if any); references, tables; an abbreviated title for use as a running headline; captions to figures (on separate sheet of paper).

Illustrations
It is the author's responsibility to provide original camera-ready artwork for all illustrations, both line and halftone. Upon request, original art will be returned to the author upon publication.

For line art, submit either original drawings, PMTs (bromides, stats, prints), or high-quality tear sheets from another publication. (Photocopies are not acceptable. Original drawings should be done in black ink on white paper, artist's board, or vellum, and have typeset or professionally lettered labels in Helvetica or a comparable sans serif typeface. Typewritten labels are not acceptable.) Most illustrations will be reduced to the single column width of approximately 3 3/8 inches (20 picas); therefore, originals drawn larger to incorporate fine detail should have proportionally larger labels as well, so that after reduction labels will be approximately 8 point type. Each piece of line art should be carefully labeled with the author's name and figure number, i.e., "Jones et al., Figure 3."

For halftones, submit glossy black and white prints. Photocopies or tear sheets are not acceptable. Each print should be labeled on the back with the author's name, figure number, and an arrow indicating which edge is up if there is any ambiguity. Write on the label before placing it on the photograph; writing on the back of the photograph can leave indentations that will show when printed.
Figure captions should be typed on a separate sheet of manuscript paper, clearly labeled, but not attached to the artwork.
Two copies of all artwork should be supplied in addition to the originals.

Tables
Tables should be typed on separate sheets together with a suitable caption at the top of each table. Column headings should be kept as brief as possible.

References
These should be indicated in the text by superior Arabic numerals, which run consecutively through the paper. The references should be grouped in a section at the end of the text in numerical order and should take the form: surname and initials (use et al. in cases where the number of authors is greater than three); full title of paper; abbreviated journal title; year of publication; volume number; inclusive page numbers. If in doubt, authors should always write the journal title in full.

References to a book should take the form: author's surname, followed by initials; title of book underlined; editors (if any); volume number/edition (if any); name of publisher; place of publication; year of publication; and inclusive page numbers.

Proofs
Authors are responsible for ensuring that all manuscripts (whether original or revised) are accurately typed before final submission. One set of proof is sent to authors before publication; this should be returned promptly by air express. The publishers reserve the right to charge for any changes made at the proof stage (other than printer's errors), since the insertion or deletion of a single word may necessitate the resetting of whole paragraphs.

Reprints
Twenty-five reprints are sent free of charge to the senior author of each contribution. Additional reprints can be ordered at prices shown on the reprint order form, which is sent with the proofs.
