About the journal

Published on behalf of the New York Academy of Sciences, the Annals provide multidisciplinary perspectives on research of current scientific interest with far-reaching implications for the wider scientific community and society at large. Scope, although concentrated on biological and medical sciences, extends into fields as diverse as astronomy, psychology, anthropology and philosophy. Each publication assembles the best thinking of key contributors to a field of investigation at a time when emerging developments offer the promise of new insight. These volumes stimulate new ways to think about science by providing a neutral forum for discourse - within and across many institutions and fields.

Instructions to Authors

The Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences is one of the oldest scientific serial publications in the United States and among the most cited of multidisciplinary scientific serials worldwide. Continually published since 1823, the Annals is the premier publication of the Academy, offering review articles in special topical areas and proceedings of conferences sponsored by the Academy as well as other scientific organizations.

The Annals provides multidisciplinary perspectives on research of current interest in the scientific community and society at large. Although primarily focused in biomedicine and biology, the scope of the Annals extends into diverse fields such as psychology, anthropology, and philosophy. Edited in consultation with experts in their fields, the Annals provides a neutral forum for discourse within and across many institutions and disciplines.

Other important facts about the Annals

  • Members of the New York Academy of Sciences are entitled to free open access to the Annals online, one free Annals issue each year, and discounts on additional issues. Join the Academy to get full access.
  • Full text of the Annals is published online by Wiley Interscience. The Annals is also accessible from subscribing institutions and to others on a pay-per-view basis; tables of contents and abstracts are available to everyone.
  • All Annals volumes, dating from Volume 1 of the Annals of the Lyceum of Natural History in the City of New York, first published in 1823, through all volumes of the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, first published in 1879, are currently available online for Academy members with Annals benefits and for institutions that have purchased access to this content.
  • The Annals is abstracted and/or indexed in all of the major abstracting and indexing services, including PubMed and Thomson Scientific.
  • Thomson Scientific ranks the Annals among the most highly cited sources among the general science literature.
  • Each issue of the Annals is developed by a guest issue editor (or editors) in consultation with the Annals director and executive editor. Neither unsolicited manuscripts nor abstracts will be considered for publication.

Proposals for new issues should be sent to the Annals Director and Executive Editor Douglas Braaten (dbraaten@nyas.org).

You can also access Manuscript Central at any time to check the status of your manuscript. The New York Academy of Sciences will inform you by e-mail when the volume editor has reviewed your manuscript.

Basic Requirements

Please contact the Annals editorial staff for specific guidelines on preparing a manuscript for submission.

Manuscript format

Most up-to-date word-processing software is acceptable, such as Word, WordPerfect, or ClarisWorks. PC DOS, Windows, and Macintosh formats are acceptable. Please save your file in a PC format if you are working on a UNIX-based system. Manuscripts should also be saved with formatting intact. Rich-text formats are preferable. Do not send manuscripts as PDF or PostScript files, as these cannot be edited.

Tables

All tables should be sent as Word or other editable files. Excel files are incompatible with the typesetting software.

Figures

All figure art must be submitted as individual files separate from the manuscript. Please also be aware that we do not accept figures in Word, JPEG, PDF, CorelDraw, Excel, or PowerPoint formats.

  • We can only accept TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) or EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) files in PC or Macintosh format, preferably from PhotoShop or Illustrator software. We cannot accept PDF, Excel, JPEG, Freehand, Canvas, PowerPoint, CorelDRAW, or MacDrawPro files; such files must be converted to TIFF or EPS files. Figures should not be embedded in Word files.
  • Resolution must be 300 dpi for photographs and 600 dpi for line illustrations (all components of an individual figure must be at the correct resolution; for example, "grouped" objects at low resolution will not publish clearly).
  • Figures should be at a width of 3–4 inches (7.6–10.1 cm).
  • Lettering should be in a clear, sans-serif typeface (either Helvetica or Arial); the same typeface and font size should be used for all figures in a paper. Use Symbol font for Greek letters.
  • Figures should be on a white background, and should avoid excessive boxing; pixelated computer drawings are not acceptable.
References

Include only those references that are actually cited in your manuscript and cite all references in the text. Please include no more than 75 references.

References should be cited in the text in numerical order as superscript numbers. Reference numbers come immediately after punctuation marks (including : ; " ? !), with no intervening space, but should fall within closing brackets, braces, or parentheses. If your software does not set superscript numbers, key reference numbers with ;s. For example, ;s2;s4 would be 24 for reference number 24.

Permissions

If you are reprinting figures from another source it is your responsibility to acquire a letter of permission from the copyright holder and forward the signed, original permission letter to us. You should submit these as supplementary files in Manuscript Central.

If you need to acquire permission to use an Annals article or portions of one, please follow these instructions for contacting Wiley-Blackwell directly.

Competing Interests Statement

Please sign and return a Competing Interests Statement with your manuscript. Download our Competing Interests Statement (28 KB PDF).

Copyright Transfer Agreement

Please also sign and return a Copyright Transfer Agreement with your manuscript. Download our Copyright Transfer Agreement (54 KB PDF).
