If a manuscript is rejected, only the top copy and the original drawings will be returned to the author.
Submission of a paper implies that it has not been published previously, that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, and that if accepted it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in English or in any other language, without the written consent of the publisher.

Types of Contributions

All papers should be concerned with original work in the field of nuclear energy, particularly in safety, siting, environment, economics and fuel management. Basic physics and engineering papers are also sought. Progress reports and reviews which satisfy the Editors' standards of scientific worth and topicality will be accepted for publication in the companion journal, Progress in Nuclear Energy.
The Editors will consider for publication short papers of work in progress, or intermediate results of continuing investigations, which are of interest but possibly incomplete or tentative. Such papers will be classified as Technical Notes and authors should state whether they wish their manuscript to be considered under this heading.
Authors may submit manuscripts under the heading "Algorithms". These should contain short reports of numerical tricks and devices that have been found useful and which the author feels would be of general benefit to our readers.

Manuscript Preparation

General: Manuscripts must be typewritten, double-spaced with wide margins on one side of white paper. Good quality print outs with a font size of 12 or 10 pt are required. The corresponding author should be identified (include a Fax number and E-mail address). Full postal addresses must be given for all co-authors. Authors are requested to state on the first page of the manuscript (a) the number of manuscript folios, (b) the number of figures and (c) the number of tables. Authors should consult an issue of the journal for style and layout if possible. The Editors reserve the right to adjust style to certain standards of uniformity. Authors should retain a copy of their manuscript since we cannot accept responsibility for damage or loss of papers. Original manuscripts are discarded one month after publication unless the Publisher is asked to return original material after use.
Abstracts: The essential contents of each manuscript should be briefly recapitulated in an abstract.
Text: Follow this order when typing manuscripts: Title, Authors, Affiliations, Abstract, Keywords, Main Text, Acknowledgements, Appendix, References, Vitae, Figure Legends and then Tables. Do not import the Figures into your text. The corresponding author should be identified with an asterisk and footnote. All other footnotes, if necessary (except for table footnotes), should be identified with superscript numbers. The technical description of the methods used should only be given in detail when such methods are new.
References: All publications cited in the text should be presented in a list of references following the text of the manuscript. In the text refer to the author's name (without initials) and year of publication (e.g. "Since Peterson (1993) has shown that..." or "This is in agreement with results obtained later (Kramer, 1994)". If three or more authors wrote a publication use the first author followed by "et al.", in the text. The list of references should be arranged alphabetically by authors' names. The manuscript should be carefully checked to ensure that the spelling of authors' names and dates are exactly the same in the text as in the reference list.
References should be given in the following form:
Birnbaum, Z. 1969. On the importance of different components in a multicomponent system. In: Krishnaiah, P.R. (Ed.), Multivariate Analysis II. Academic Press, New York, pp. 581-592.
Frutuoso e Melo, P.F., Alvim, A.C.M., Silva, F.C. 1998. Sensitivity analysis on the accident rate of a plant equipped with a single protective channel by generalized perturbation methods. Annals of Nuclear Energy 25 (15), 1191-1207.
Oliveira, A.C., Lima, F.R.A., Alvim, A.C.M. 1989. Application of the generalized perturbation theory to a two-channel model for the sensitivity analysis of PWR reactor cores (in Portuguese). Proceedings of 75th National Meeting on Reactor Physics and Thermohydryulics. Brazil, pp. 269-280.
Illustrations: All illustrations should be provided in camera-ready form, suitable for reproduction (which may include reduction) without retouching. In addition, illustrations should be sent in electronic form wherever possible, with each illustration included as an individual TIFF or EPS file. Photographs, charts and diagrams are all to be referred to as "Figure(s)" and should be numbered consecutively in the order in which they are referred. They should accompany the manuscript, but should not be included in the manuscript pages. All illustrations should be clearly marked on the back with the figure number and the authors' name. All figures are to have a caption. Captions should be supplied on a separate sheet.
Line drawings: Line drawings should include all relevant details. Good quality printouts on white paper produced in black ink are required. All lettering, graph lines and points on graphs should be sufficiently large and bold to permit reproduction when the diagram has been reduced to a size suitable for inclusion in the journal. Dye-line prints or photocopies are not suitable for reproduction. Do not use any type of shading on computer-generated illustrations.
Photographs: It is requested that photographs should be kept to the minimum necessary. Original photographs must be supplied, where possible, supply halftones as they are to be reproduced (e.g. black and white or colour). If words or numbers are to appear on a photograph two prints should be sent, the lettering being clearly indicated on one print only.
Colour: Where colour figures are required, the author will be charged accordingly. (Further details of cost are available from Author Services, at Elsevier Science).
Tables: Tables should be numbered consecutively and given a suitable caption and each table typed on a separate sheet. Footnotes to tables should be typed below the table and should be referred to by superscript letters. No vertical rules should be used. Tables should not duplicate results presented elsewhere in the manuscript, (e.g. in graphs).

Disk Submission

Authors should save their electronic copy to disk or CD ROM and submit it by post with the final version of the manuscript. The electronic copy should match the hardcopy exactly. Always keep a backup copy of your electronic file for reference and safety. Full details of electronic submission and formats can be obtained from http://authors.elsevier.com

Proofs

Proofs will be sent to the author (first named author if no corresponding author identified of multi-authored papers) and should be returned within 48 hours of receipt. Corrections should be restricted to typesetting errors; any other may be charged to the author. Any queries should be answered in full. Please note that authors are urged to check their proofs carefully before return, since the inclusion of late corrections cannot be guaranteed. Proofs are to be returned to the Log-in Department, Elsevier Science, The Boulevard, Langford Lane, Kidlington, Oxford OX5 1GB, UK.

Offprints

Twenty-five offprints will be supplied free of charge. Additional offprints and copies of the issue can be ordered at a specially reduced rate using the order form sent to the corresponding author after the manuscript has been accepted. Orders for reprints (produced after publication of an article) will incur a 50% surcharge.

Copyright

All authors must sign the "Transfer of Copyright" agreement before the article can be published. This transfer agreement enables Elsevier Science Ltd to protect the copyrighted material for the authors, without the author relinquishing his/her proprietary rights. The copyright transfer covers the exclusive rights to reproduce and distribute the article, including reprints, photographic reproductions, microfilm or any other reproductions of a similar nature, and translations.
