About the journal
This official journal of the Association of Clinical Biochemists, edited in collaboration with de Nederlandse Vereniging voor Klinische Chemie and Japan Society of Clinical Chemistry, is an international journal of biochemistry in medicine. One of the world's foremost in its field, it publishes fully refereed papers of international authorship that contribute to existing knowledge in all fields of clinical biochemistry, especially that pertaining to the understanding, diagnosis and treatment of human disease. It also publishes papers on immunology, genetics, biotechnology, haematology, computing and management where they have both biochemical and clinical relevance. Contributions include original articles, short reports, reviews, "personal views", case reports, letters to the Editor, and commissioned book reviews
The Annals of Clinical Biochemistry accepts papers that contribute to knowledge in all fields of Clinical Biochemistry, especially that appertaining to the understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of disease. It publishes papers on immunology, genetics, biotechnology, haematology, computing and management where they have both biochemical and clinical relevance. Papers describing evaluation or implementation of commercial reagent kits or the performance of new analysers require substantial original information. Contributions should be submitted for publication under the following section headings:
Original Articles describing substantial original research that falls within the scope of the Journal
Short Reports which include brief technical notes and preliminary communications should not contain more than 800 words, one figure or table and have not more than six references. Structured headings, including a conclusion, are desirable.
Reviews which are of a substantial and topical nature. They are generally invited; other prospective authors should consult with the Editor-in-Chief.
Personal Views which are pertinent to clinical and scientific developments or to the practice of Clinical Biochemistry. These are generally invited.
Case Reports describing clinical cases which have significant original observations, are instructive, include adequate methodological details and provide conclusions.
Instructions to Authors
Preparation of Manuscripts The typescript including references and legends, should be double-spaced on one side only on paper no larger than A4 (30 x 21 cm), allowing wide margins (about 4 cm). Three copies should be sent to the appropriate editor accompanied, where possible, by an IBM or Apple Macintosh compatible floppy disc containing a full version of the manuscript. A separate sheet should be used for the title page, which should contain the authors' names, the addresses of the laboratories at which the work was performed, and the name, title, full postal address and e-mail address (where possible) of the author responsible for correspondence. Identification of the author(s) should be confined to the title page to allow the manuscript to be refereed anonymously.
Title The title should be short and informative, indicating the contents concisely and adequately.
Abstract A structured abstract of no more than 200 words must accompany all Original Articles and Short Reports. The abstract should normally use four headings: Background (context and rationale); Methods (type of study, patients, materials, techniques); Results (main numerical data and statistical information) and Conclusions (main objective and verifiable conclusions). Reviews, Personal Views and Case Reports should contain an abstract of up to 200 words but without the structure required for Original Articles. Letters to the Editor do not require an abstract.
Illustrations All illustrations (figures) should be black and white, and should be numbered in the order in which they are mentioned in the text. They should be provided in camera-ready form with redundant areas trimmed; the figure number, manuscript title and the top/bottom should be marked on the back. Line drawings should be professionally drawn and labelled (freehand lettering is not acceptable); they may be submitted as laser printouts, photographic prints or high quality photocopies. All other illustrations should be black and white photographic prints. Any lettering/numbering/graph points on illustrations should be sufficiently large to ensure legibility after reduction for publication, i.e. reduction to a width of 77 mm (one column width) or 160 mm (page width). Three sets of illustrations should be submitted, with one marked original and two copies. The list of captions for illustrations should be typed in double-spacing on a separate sheet of paper.
References to previous work should be made using the Vancouver style, listing the first six authors N Engl J Med. 1997; 336: 309?5.
Tables should not duplicate information given in the text. They should be numbered in the order in which they are mentioned in the text, be given a brief title, and each should be typed on a separate sheet in double-spacing. Vertical rules should not be used.
Abbreviations Symbols and abbreviations should be those currently used in the Annals of Clinical Biochemistry. Authors should not create new abbreviations and acronyms. The Biochemical Society's booklet Instructions to Authors and the RSM's booklet Units, Symbols and Abbreviations both provide lists of approved abbreviations. All measurements should be expressed in SI units (see Baron DN, et al. The use of SI units in reporting results obtained in hospital laboratories. Ann Clin Biochem 1974; 11: 194-202).
Permission to reproduce material Previously published tables or figures should be accompanied by the copyright holder's written consent for publication (in "all forms and media") in the Annals of Clinical Biochemistry, inclusion of an acknowledgement in the legend and a full reference.
Author copyright proforma A proforma signed by all the authors must accompany each submission to the Annals. The current version is published in the January issue of the Annals and can be printed from the Journal's Web Page.
Page proofs will be submitted without the original typescript to the author for proof-correction and should be returned within three days. Major alterations to the text cannot be accepted.
Offprints are available and should be ordered from the publisher and paid for when proofs are returned. An order form accompanies all proofs. Offprints of Letters are not available, but these may be freely copied by their authors.
