About the journal

For more than one hundred years the Annals of Anatomy have been one of the most famous and widespread journals on morphology. The journal is open to original papers from the fields of anatomy, topographic and clinical anatomy, and embryology. Contributions dealing with various aspects of the microscopical and submicroscopical organization of biological structures including reports from the fields of comparative and experimental cell and tissue research are also published

Instructions to Authors
  1. General.
Manuscripts and their accompanying illustrations must be submitted in triplicate to facilitate reviewing. The text must be typed double-spaced throughout on one side of bond or heavy-duty paper A4 (210mm x 297mm) with a 3,5cm margin on all sides. Three sets of figures: mounted layouts of the originals and two sets of good quality photographs (not photocopies) must be submitted.
Submission of a manuscript involves the assurance that it has not been accepted for publication elsewhere. This restriction does not apply to results published as abstracts or as preliminary communications. Once published the copyright of the paper belongs to Urban & Fischer Verlag Jena. No charge is made for publication, but authors will be required to pay for extensive changes introduced after the manuscript has been set in type.
To assure the widest possible readership manuscripts in English are preferred, but papers written in German will also be considered. Authors not entirely familiar with English usage are advised to seek the assistance of an English-speaking colleague. English spelling should follow the Concise Oxford Dictionary and The Oxford Dictionary for Writers and Editors. German spelling should follow the Duden, Band I, Rechtschreibung der deutschen Sprache.
Manuscripts are normally subject to the assessments of reviewers and the editor. Manuscripts that have been extensively modified in the editorial process will be returned to the author for retyping.
Brief accounts containing new interesting results may be published as "short communications". The may not exceed four printed pages, including tables and figures. The figures should not occupy more than two-thirds of one printed page. The editors reserve the right to make the decision as to wheter a manuscript qualifies as a "Short communication".

Number all manuscript pages consecutively beginning with title page.
Do not hyphenate words at the end of the lines.
Do not begin sentences with abbreviations.
Spell out the word Figure in the text except when it appears in parentheses: Figure 3, (Figs. 2--5).
Always spell out numbers when they stand as the first word in a sentence: abbreviations cannot follow such numbers. Numbers indicating time, mass, and measurements are to be in a arabic numerals when followed by abbreviations (e.g., 2mm; 1; 3ml). In general, write out the numbers one to ten in the text. All higher numbers should be given as numerals.

The manuscript should have a uniform style. It should consist of subdivisions in the following sequence: Summary, Introduction, Material and methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements, References, Tables, Figure legends.

  2. Title page.
Title of paper; Full name(s) of author(s); Institution of affiliation and complete postal address; a short title of not more than 45 characters (including spaces) to be used as running head. The title should be brief and should indicate the species studied. Subtitles are not encouraged.

  3. Summary.
Submit a summary of 250 words or less. It should indicate clearly the scope and main conclusions of the paper. Manuscripts in German additionally need a carefully translated English summary.

  4. Key words.
Immediately after the Summary, up to seven topical key words in English for subject indexing must be supplied.

  5. The introduction should give the pertinent background to the study and should explain why the work was done.

  6. Materials and methods should give essential details, including experimental design and statistical analysis. It must give, in addition to the names of animals used, the number of animals used and the conditions under which the animals were kept, and the anaestetics and technique of administration. Do not forget to provide information about species, strain, sex, weight and age.

  7. The results should present the findings of the research. They must be free of discussion. Results should be written in the past tense.

  8. The Discussion should cover, but not simply repeat the new findings and should present the author's results in the broader context of other work on the subject interpreting them with a minimum of speculation.

  9. References cited in the text should conform to the following examples: Mendoza (1990), Knebel and Mecke (1990) and Mendoza et al. (1990) or (Mendoza, 1990; Knebel and Mecke 1990; Mendoza et al. 1990; Mecke 1991).

  10. All references cited in the text should be listed at the end of the paper as follows:
    a) Single authors - list alphabetically and then chronologically.
    b) Author and one co-author - list first alphabetically by co-author, and then chronologically.
    c) First author and more than one co-author - list chronologically (not alphabetically by the second author) because only the first author's name and "et al." follewed by the year publication will be used in the text.
    d) In case that more than one paper by the same author(s) published in the same year is cited, the letters a, b, c, etc., should follow the year - e.g. Bargmann (1970a) - in both the text and the reference list.
References must include: authors (surname followed by initials), year of publication, complete title of article or chapter, name of journal or title of book, editors (if a book), volume number, name of publisher and place of publication (if a book), and first and last page numbers of article or chapter. Names of journals should be abbreviated in accordance with Index Medicus.

    Examples

Articles "in press" may be cited in the reference list, but articles "submitted" or "in preparation" should not be included.

  11. Legends should be types on a separate sheet and must make the meaning of each figure understandable without further reference to the text. If the original magnification is quoted in a sentence, it should appear in parentheses. e.g. (x500); at the end of legend it should appear, e. g. "...fibrils. x46000".

  12. Illustrations. Since reproduction of illustrations is costly, authors should limit the number of figures to that which adequately presents the findings. Three sets of figures: one set of halftone illustrations, i.e., micrographs, shaded drawings, wash drawings, earmarked for reproduction, must be submitted as sharp, glossy originals, trimmed at right angles and be of the desired final size, and two sets of good-quality photographs (not photocopies). All figures should be lettered and numbered. Letraset is recommended for lettering micrographs, including figure numbers. Inscriptions must be about 3mm high. Wherever possible, individual micrographs should be mounted together in the form of economically arranged layouts. Such individual figures grouped together must be separated by spaces of not more than 1mm. The layouts or single figures may either match the width of the column (85mm), the width of the entire page (175mm) or be of 118mm width with the legend at the side. The maximum length of the layout is 240mm, including the legend printed at its foot. Each figure should bear the number, author's names and an arrow to indicate top in soft pencil on the reverse.
For technical reasons all illustrations must be mounted on flexible white drawing paper. Thick cardboard is not acceptable.
As a rule, requests for color reproductions cannot be approved unless the authors bear the costs.

  13. Line drawings should be submitted as good-quality glossy prints. Inscriptions should be clearly legible, at least 2mm high in the printed version.

  14. Tables must be numbered consecutively in arabic numerals. Table titles should be complete but brief. Numerical results should be expressed as means with the relevant standard errors and/or statistically significant differences, quoting probability levels (P-value).

  15. Proofs: One set of page and one set of illustration proofs will be sent to the author.

  16. Offprints. Twenty five (25) offprints of each paper are supplied free of charge. Additional offprints are available, provided the order is received with the correct proof.
