About the journal

Andrologia

Official publication of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Andrologie

Print ISSN: 0303-4569
Online ISSN: 1439-0272
Issues per Volume: Bi-monthly

The journal andrologia, first published in 1969, provides an international forum for original papers in English on the current clinical, morphological, biochemical, and experimental status of organic male infertility and sexual disorders in men. The origin of the articles, which are from all over the world, is primarily from the field of andrology including the aging male, and reflects the progress of fundamental research and therapeutic development of andrology. In addition, andrologia provides articles on anatomy, endocrinology, physiology, and veterinary medicine.

andrologia is essential reading for scientists in fundamental andrological research, laboratory diagnosticians, and clinicians in all fields (especially dermatologists, endocrinologists, gynecologists, oncologists, and urologists), and veterinarians.

Instructions to Authors

1. General

Andrologia publishes original scientific research work from the whole field of andrology. Manuscripts in English are preferred (following the Concise Oxford Dictionary and The Oxford Dictionary for Writers and Editors). Authors should aim for a concise readable style. Letters to the editors and brief communications will be accepted.

2. Submission and Acceptance of Manuscripts

Papers dealing with basic andrology (as well as morphological and experimental spermatology) should be directed to:

Please submit your manuscript on diskette, zip, or CD-ROM with three high-quality hardcopies and retain a copy for yourself. Please include three sets of figures: one set of the originals and two sets of good quality photographs (not photocopies). A covering letter signed by the author responsible should contain statements indicating the following:

1) that all authors have made a substantial contribution to the information or the text submitted for publication;

2) that all have read and approved the final manuscript;

3) that they have no substantial direct or indirect commercial or financial incentive associated with publishing the article;

The number of authors should be limited to six. The author responsible should be designated as correspondent and his complete address, telephone/fax number, and e-mail address provided. The authors may submit names of reviewers. The author is responsible for indicating the source of extra-institutional funding, in particular that provided by commercial sources, the accuracy of the references and all statements made in the work.

In consultation with the appropriate experts on the Editorial Board, the Editors-in-Chief decide on acceptance of articles, corrections, and revision where necessary.

Manuscripts must conform to the journal style and should be submitted in the final version containing all revisions. Upon acceptance of your manuscript, you will receive the Manuscript Submission form, to be returned to the editor within five days. This form includes, among other items, your complete corresponding address, the copyright transfer agreement, and the guidelines for colour print charges.

Your manuscript will be destroyed three months after publication. Only appropriately marked originals will be returned. The publisher cannot be held responsible for any damage or loss through the post.

3. Requirements for Manuscripts

3.1 Format
Manuscripts must be typed on one side only of A4 (210 ?297 mm) paper, double-spaced throughout and with ample margins of at least 3.5 cm. All pages must be numbered consecutively. Starting with the title paper as p.1, the text, beginning with p.2, is to be arranged in the following order: Summary, brief introduction, material and methods (or patients/subjects and methods if human patients/subjects were used), results, discussion, acknowledgements, references, figure legends, tables.

The first page of the manuscript must provide: the title in English; name(s) of author(s); departmental and institutional affiliation; a short title of not more than 45 characters (including spaces) to be used as running head; up to five topical key words in English for subject indexing; the full postal address of the corresponding author to whom proofs will be sent. The title should be brief and should indicate the species studied. Subtitles are not encouraged.

The summary should not exceed 200 words, should be one paragraph and should be free of references and abbreviations. It should indicate clearly the scope and main conclusions of the paper. The introduction should give the pertinent background to the study and should explain why the work was done. Material and methods should give essential details, including experimental design and statistical analysis. The results should present the findings of the research. They should be free from discussion. Results should be written in the past tense. The discussion should cover, but not simply repeat the new findings and should present the author's results in broader context of other work on the subject interpreting them with a minimum of speculation. Acknowledgements should be as brief as possible.

The manuscript comprises a printout of the text and a list of all figures and tables with their captions and titles on a separate piece of paper. In anticipation of the online edition, the author is requested to convey the essential information within the first 60 characters of the captions. Each figure, table, and bibliographic entry must have a reference in the text. For all figures please include reproduceable artwork (marked with the author's name, short title, figure number, and an arrow to indicate top in soft pencil on the reverse).

The data carriers (diskette, etc.) must be PC/Windows-compatible and may not contain any files other than those for the current manuscript. Please include a list of the files, noting the file name, the computer program and its version number. Please do not import the figures into the text file. The text should be prepared using standard software (Microsoft Word, Word Perfect) or saved in rtf format; do not use automated or manual hyphenation. Please do not include footnotes.

For further information please consult: http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/authors/journal.asp.

3.2 Length
Including illustrations, tables, and references, manuscripts should not exceed 15 pages of DIN A4.Brief communications, including title, summary and references must not exceed 1000 words plus one figure or table. The number and size of figures and tables should be limited to the essential minimum.

3.3. Units, Abbreviations and Nomenclature
The SI (Système International) units should be used. Doses of drugs should be given as unit weight per body weight, e.g. mmol kg-1. Rates should be expressed with negative indices. Concentrations should be given in terms of molarity, e.g. mmol 1-1, not a mM.

For semen analysis authors should use the following nomenclature: spermia = referring to semen volume; aspermia = no semen; hypospermia = volume less than 2 ml*; zoospermia = referring to spermatozoa in semen; oligozoospermia = less than 20 million spermatozoa per ml*; asthenozoospermia = decreased motility of spermatozoa* (less than 50 % motile spermatozoa [WHO categories 'a' and 'b'] or less than 25 % spermatozoa of WHO category 'a'); teratozoospermia = more than 70 % abnormal spermatozoa* (*Even though these terms can be used they should whenever possible be replaced with precise information about volume, sperm density etc.)

3.4. Illustrations and Tables
Figures should be saved in a neutral data format such as TIFF or EPS. Powerpoint and Word graphics are unsuitable for reproduction. Please do not use any pixel-oriented programmes. Scanned figures (only in TIFF format) should have a resolution of 300 dpi (halftone) or 600 to 1200 dpi (line drawings) in relation to the reproduction size. Please submit the data for figures in black and white. However, colour photos can be reproduced in black and white (with a possible loss of contrast). Figures printed in colour are subject to an added charge. Colour print charges are explained on the manuscript submission form. Colour graphics should be created using the CMYK colour palette (print colours), not RGB (monitor colours). There is a charge for alterations to figures when carried out by the publisher.

Please note that figures will generally be reduced to fit within the printed column (80 mm wide) or the width of the entire page (170 mm). The maximum possible length of the layout is 240 mm. Numbering and lettering must still be readable when reduced (e.g. maps), and the scale might not correspond with the original (microscopic pictures), thereby invalidating references to scale in the text. If a figure is to be cropped, please mark the lines on a photocopy or tracing paper. Printouts should be made with a laser printer at the highest resolution (> 600 dpi).

Wherever possible, individual micrographs should be mounted together in the form of economically arranged layouts. Such individual figures grouped together must be separated by spaces of not more than 1 mm.

If artwork is to be scanned, line drawings should only be contour drawings without halftones (shades of grey).Please do not use patterns; rough hatching is possible.

Graphs with an x and y axis should not be enclosed in frames; only 2-dimensional representations. Do not forget the labels and units.

Captions for the figures should give a precise description of the content and should not be repeated within the figure. Inscriptions should be uniform, about 3 mm high, and must be professionally prepared. Letraset (or equivalent instant lettering) is recommended for lettering micrographs, including figure numbers.

Tables should be created using the table function. Each table should carry an appropriate legend and should be presented in a way that makes the table self-explanatory.

Numerical results should be expressed as means with the relevant standard errors and/or statistically significant differences, quoting probability levels (P-values).

3.5. References
References must follow the Harvard system. Cited in the text they should conform to the following examples: Brown (1990), Brown & Smith (1990) and Brown et al. (1990)or (Brown, 1990; Brown & Smith, 1990; Brown et al., 1990; Smith, 1991).

All references should be listed at the end of the paper as follows:

(a) single author-list alphabetically and then chronologically;

(b) author and one co-author list first alphabetically by co-author, and then chronologically;

(c) first author and more than one co-author-list chronologically (not alphabetically by the second author) because only the first author's name and et al. followed by the year of publication will be used in the text;

(d) in case that more than one paper by the same author(s) published in the same year is cited, the letters a, b, c, etc., should follow the year - e.g. Brown (1990a) - in both the text and the reference list.

References must include: authors (surname followed by initials), year of publication, complete title of (a) article or (b) chapter, name of (a) journal or title of (b) book editors (if a book) volume number, name of publisher and place of publication (if a book), and first and last page numbers of (a) article or (b) chapter. Names of journals should be abbreviated in accordance with Index Medicus. Examples:

Articles: DeKretser DM, Kerr JB, Paulsen CA (1975) The peritubular tissue in the normal and pathological human testis. An ultrastructural study. Biol Reprod 12:317 324.

Chapter of a book: Horstmann E, Wartenberg H (1973) Fortpflanzungszellen. In: Grundlagen der Zytologie. Hirsch GC, Ruska H, Sitte P (eds) Fischer, Jena, pp 531 589.

Books: Roosen-Runge EC (1977) The process of spermatogenesis in animals. Cambridge University Press, London - New York - Melbourne.

Articles "in press" may be cited in the reference list, but articles "submitted" or "in preparation" should not be included.

4. Copyright

Publication in the journal can only take place under the condition, that the manuscript has not been published or submitted for publication elsewhere. This restriction does not apply to results published as abstracts, letters to editors, or as preliminary communications. Upon submission of the manuscript to the publisher, the author certifies that neither his contribution nor any foreign text or figures contained therein that he procures infringe upon the rights of a third party, and that he alone is authorized to dispose of the existing right of utilization with regard to copyright. The author will refrain from any other duplication and distribution or digital transfer and reproduction (e.g. on the Internet) during the period of the contract. For the duration of the lawful copyright, the author grants the publisher regardless of location the exclusive right of duplication and dissemination (right of publication) without restriction as to the intangible reproduction of the article, the right to make the article available to any individual online as well as the right of issuance of licenses to third parties nationally and abroad for the exercise of the granted ancillary rights. The publisher is authorized to make use of the utilization rights to which he is entitled, however, he is not obligated to do so.

5. Proof Correction and Offprints

You will receive proofs of your article, please check, sign and return them without delay. As changes to proofs are costly, we ask that you only correct typesetting errors.

Proofs will be sent via e-mail as an Acrobat PDF (portable document format) file. The e-mail server must be able to accept attachments up to 4 MB in size. Acrobat Reader will be required in order to read this file. This software can be downloaded (free of charge) from the follow-ing Web site: www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

This will enable the file to be opened, read on screen, and printed out in order for any corrections to be added. Further instructions will be sent with the proof. Proofs will be posted if no e-mail address is avail-able; in your absence, please arrange for a colleague to access your e-mail to retrieve the proofs.

Offprints can be ordered on the form attached to the proofs. Orders placed at a later date are subject to a higher charge. Offprints and complimentary copies will be sent to the corresponding or first-named author for distribution, unless otherwise noted on the order form.
