About the journal

The American Journal of Pathology, official journal of the American Society for Investigate Pathology, seeks to publish high-quality original papers on the cellular and molecular mechanisms of disease. The editors accept manuscripts which report important findings on disease pathogenesis or basic biological mechanisms that relate to disease, without preference for a specific method of analysis. High priority is given to: a) studies on human disease and relevant experimental models using cellular, molecular, biological, chemical and immunological approaches in conjunction with morphology; b) work involving transgenic and knockout animal models; and c) reports of new techniques in the study of disease pathogenesis and in molecular diagnosis.
The American Society for Investigative Pathology is a society of biomedical scientists who investigate mechanisms of disease. Investigative pathology is an integrative discipline that links the presentation of disease in the whole organism to its fundamental cellular and molecular mechanisms. It uses a variety of structural, functional and genetic techniques and ultimately applies research findings to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. ASIP advocates the practice of investigative pathology and fosters the professional career development and education of its members. |
Instructions to Authors
Manuscript Categories
In addition to Regular Articles, the Journal publishes articles categorized as Technical Advances and Animal Models (see items c and b, above), Reviews and Commentaries. Authors who want to publish a Review article should send an outline for prior approval by the Editor-in-Chief. Reviews should have a maximum of 6,000 words, 75 references, and four tables or figures (at least one which is mechanistic). The category of Short Communications was discontinued in favor of concise reporting in and expeditious review of all manuscripts.
Review Process
The Editor-in-Chief assigns manuscripts to Associate Editors according to their expertise. The Associate Editor will solicit reviewers (typically, two external reviews are sought). Authors are encouraged to identify up to five potential reviewers. The reviewer comments and Associate Editor's recommendation are evaluated by the Editor-in-Chief for disposition and transmittal to the authors. Every effort is made to complete the review process within 45 days of the date received.
Review Decisions
Only a portion of manuscripts will be accepted for publication. A number of worthy manuscripts will be rejected based on priority. The Journal will advise authors whether the manuscript is accepted, acceptable with revisions, or rejected. A manuscript may be returned to the authors without outside review if the editors find it inappropriate for publication in this Journal.
Manuscript Submission
Since the recent adoption of an online review system, the editorial office prefers to receive manuscripts via Rapid Review (www.rapidreview.com). Authors having difficulty submitting via Rapid Review are encouraged to complete the online submission form on Rapid Review and mail one printed and one electronic (disk) copy of the manuscript, as well as one publication-quality printed set and an electronic copy of the figures. The cover letter must state any conflicts of interest and affirm that the manuscript has not been published previously and is not being considered concurrently by another publication. The corresponding author will receive an acknowledgment by email, which will include the number assigned to the manuscript. A non-refundable manuscript processing fee of $50 is required (for details, see www.asip.org/pubs/msfeeform.pdf).
Manuscript Preparation
Manuscripts should be prepared in the style of the Journal and in accordance with The Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals (see www.icmje.org). Standard abbreviations will be found in the CBE Style Manual (6th ed., 1994). Papers should be double-spaced throughout (including references, tables and figure legends) and printed on a letter-quality printer. All pages should be numbered. Manuscripts not conforming to Journal style will be returned to the authors.
Title Page
The title page must include a concise title; names (not initials) of all authors; department, institution and address where the research was performed; number of text pages, tables and figures; a short running head (40 characters or less); grant numbers and sources of support; corresponding author's name, address, phone, fax and email; name and address of author who should receive reprint requests.
Abstract
An abstract of 200 words or less should be prepared on a separate sheet and should be intelligible to the general reader without reference to the text. Abbreviations should be avoided.
Text
The remaining sections of the text, which may include Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, and Acknowledgments, need not begin on new pages.
References
References should begin on a new page, be double-spaced and numbered in order of citation in the text. Complete author citation is required (use of "et al" is not acceptable). References should conform to the style of the Journal. Examples follow:

Tables
Tables should be typed double-spaced and submitted on separate pages, as part of the manuscript.
Data Supplements
Microarray data and gene sequences must be maintained in a reliable unrestricted archive, such as Gene Expression Omnibus (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/geo/), Array Express (www.ebi.ac.uk/arrayexpress), and GenBank (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/Genbank/), and or as supplemental data on the Journal's website (www.amjpathol.org). The Editors reserve the right to determine if data supplements are essential to the published article, in which case the data must be published on the Journal's website. Otherwise, authors who do not supply data to one of the above archives must assume responsibility for maintaining a live, unrestricted link to the material from the URL published within the article, in perpetuity. Failure to maintain a live, unrestricted link may result in retraction of the article by the Editors. For more information on publishing your data supplementally on the Journal's website, please contact the Editorial Office.
Figures
Authors should give considerable care in preparing figures. When submitting composite figures, the front side of individual parts should be clearly and properly labeled. Figures should be sized to fit one column (8 cm) or two columns (17 cm). Maximum page length is 22.5 cm. Figures deviating from these dimensions will be sized at the publisher's discretion. Unwanted background material should be trimmed and edges should be straight. Figure legends should be submitted as part of the manuscript and should state the staining method and degree of magnification. If the exact scale is critical, scale bars should be used on the photograph and specified in the legend.

Copyright of published manuscripts is held by the American Society for Investigative Pathology, which must receive the assignment of copyright from the authors of accepted manuscripts. See www.asip.org/pubs/ajprights.pdf for details.
Financial Disclosure
As part of copyright assignment, the authors must certify any affiliations (e.g., employment, consultancies, stock ownership, honoraria, expert testimony) with any organization or entity with a direct financial interest in the subject matter or materials discussed in the article. Failure to do so may result in editorial retraction of the article.
Color Figures
Authors will be charged $750 per figure (composites up to one printed page). A summary of color figure charges will be presented to the corresponding author of accepted manuscripts for approval prior to publication. Color figure charges will not be waived, but color figures may be published in black and white, pending editorial approval. Requests for black and white publication must be made prior to production to avoid color charges.
Page Charges
Authors will be charged $60 per printed page. Effective with the January 2004 issue, corresponding authors of published manuscripts who are current, dues-paying members of ASIP will receive full page charge rebates as a benefit of membership. Otherwise, page charges will not be waived, except for solicited editorials.
Reprints
Reprints must be ordered when page proofs are returned; an order form is included with the proofs. Late reprint orders will result in additional fees. There is no extra charge for color reprints. No complimentary reprints are provided by the publisher.
Cover Figure
The cover figure is selected by the editors from illustrations appearing in the issue. Authors are encouraged to suggest a figure for consideration. Cover figures are published at no charge.
Proofs
The printer sends two sets of page proofs and the marked manuscript to the corresponding author. The author should check the proofs carefully, mark any printer's errors, and answer queries as requested. Author changes should be kept to a minimum. The original proof must be returned within 48 hours to avoid any delay in publication. Figures provided for proof must also be returned to the printer.
