About the journal

The American Journal of Chinese Medicine, which is defined in its broadest sense possible, publishes original articles and essays relating to traditional or ethnomedicine of all cultures. Areas of particular interest include:

1.   Basic scientific and clinical research in indigenous medical techniques, therapeutic procedures, medicinal plants, and traditional medical theories and concepts;
2.   Multidisciplinary study of medical practice and health care, especially from historical, cultural, public health, and socioeconomic perspectives;
3.   International policy implications of comparative studies of medicine in all cultures, including such issues as health in developing countries, affordability and transferability of health-care techniques and concepts;
4.   Translating scholarly ancient texts or modern publications on ethnomedicine.

The American Journal of Chinese Medicine will consider for publication a broad range of scholarly contributions, including original scientific research papers, review articles, editorial comments, social policy statements, brief news items, bibliographies, research guides, letters to the editors, book reviews, and selected reprints.

The Journal does not condone or support any form of research that makes use of endangered species or otherwise conducts experiments using animals in an inappropriate or unethical manner. The Journal will consider for publications only those papers which follow the guidelines presented in the WHO Helsinki Declaration and the "Guiding Principles and Procedures of the Massachusetts General Hospital on Human Studies, 1970." For more detailed specifications for material submitted for publication, see "Note to Authors" in the inside back cover.

All articles published in this journal, including editorials, book reviews, news and comments, are signed and reflect the views of the authors. They are not official points of view held by the American Journal of Chinese Medicine or by the institutions with which the authors are affiliated.

Instructions to Authors
The following technical rules should be strictly followed in the preparation of text:

(a) Manuscripts should be typewritten, double spaced, on heavy duty, white bond paper with wide margins. The original and two xeroxed copies of the manuscript, typed preferably with fonts of, or similar to, Times New Roman including three sets of figures and tables should be sent to the Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Chun-Su Yuan, Tang Center for Herbal Medicine Research, Pritzker School of Medicine, The University of Chicago, 5841 S. Maryland Avenue, MC 4028, Chicago, IL 60637, USA. Each manuscript will be acknowledged upon receipt and sent out for review. The authors will be notified concerning the reviewer's recommendation.

(b) Title Page. Full title (no more than 100 spaces), list of authors (with academic degrees), institution, laboratory, or clinic of origin, running title, numbers of pages, figures and tables, mailing address, telephone and FAX numbers, as well as e-mail address should be included.

(c) Abstract. An abstract consisting of a single paragraph not exceeding 250 words should be included in the beginning. Particular attention should be given to preparing a concise and clearly written abstract. A list of Keywords (not more than 7 words) must also accompany the abstract.

(d) References in the text to literature cited should be given with the author's name and year of publication; e.g. (Lu and Needham, 1977; Yang et al., 1992). They should be confined to published work that is directly pertinent. At the end of the text, on a separate sheet, references should be listed in alphabetical sequence with all authors' names and full titles. Examples of style of references:

  1. Lu, G.D. and J. Needham. Records of disease in ancient China. In: F.F. Kao and J.J. Kao (eds.) Chinese Medicine - New Medicine. Neale Watson Academic Publications, New York, 1977, pp. 7-20.
  2. Yang, M.M.P., Z. Chen and J.S. Kwok. The anti-tumor effect of a small polypeptide from Coriolus vericolor (SPVC). Am. J. Chin. Med. 20: 221-232, 1992.

(e) Legends for illustrations and footnotes should be typed on separate sheets, double spaced. Footnotes are to be consecutively numbered in superscript throughout the text, and should be used as sparingly as possible.

(f) Figures should be clear, no larger than 8½ × 11 inches (22 × 28 cm) and supplied in triplicate with special attention to sharp focus and contrast to guarantee clear reproduction. The figures should be ready, in all respects, for direct processing. The lettering and symbols should be large enough to reproduce legibly after reduction. On the back of each figure, mark with pencil the names of authors and the number of the figure, also indicating the top of each.

(g) Tables. Photographs of tables should be prepared the same way as for the figures.

(h) Charges to Authors. Exceptionally numerous illustrations or elaborate tables will require special arrangement with the publisher for sharing the cost of reproduction. Color figures or plates will be accepted only at the author's expense for engraving, printing and handling. There is a page charge of US$35 per page.

(i) Reprints can be ordered in multiples of 100 and a purchase order form will be included with galley proofs.

(j) Terminology. All terms used in submitted manuscripts should be in accordance with the International Acupuncture Nomenclature proposed by WHO in 1991. Non-conformity with the standard nomenclature could delay the publication of the article. When in doubt, write to The American Journal of Chinese Medicine for further information. The Editor reserves the right to alter non-standard terminology in all manuscripts.

(k) Metrication. All measurements must be in metric units. English units should also be given parenthetically if the measurements were originally done in English units.
