Instructions to Authors

Alcoholism: Clinical And Experimental Research is the official publication of the Research Society on Alcoholism and the International Society for Biomedical Research on Alcoholism. It is a multidisciplinary journal that publishes papers based on original research that make substantial contributions to the understanding of the etiology, treatment, and prevention of alcohol-related disorders. Two kinds of papers may be submitted: full-length papers and rapid communications. Papers that the editors consider to have cross-disciplinary interest and significance may be highlighted as Feature Articles. The journal will also publish invited mini reviews and editorial commentaries.

Submitting the Manuscript

All correspondence should be addressed to the editorial office, Editor, Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, Indiana University School of Medicine, 975 West Walnut Street, IB 424, Indianapolis, IN 46202-5121.

On-line manuscript submission: All manuscripts must be submitted on-line through the new Web site at http://acer.edmgr.com. First-time users: Please click the Register button from the menu above and enter the requested information. On successful registration, you will be sent an e-mail indicating your user name and password. Print a copy of this information for future reference. Note: If you have received an e-mail from us with an assigned user ID and pasword, or if you are a repeat user, do not register again. Just log in. Once you have an assigned ID and password, you do not have to re-register, even if your status changes (that is, author, reviewer, or editor). Authors: Please click the log-in button from the menu at the top of the page and log in to the system as an Author. Submit your manuscript according to the author instructions. You will be able to track the progress of your manuscript through the system. If you experience any problems, please contact [Mary Newcomb, mnewcomb@iupui.edu, (317) 278-4765 phone, (317) 278-4983 fax]. Requests for help and other questions will be addressed in the order received. Authors who submit a manuscript do so with the understanding that if it is accepted for publication, copyright in the article, including the right to reproduce the article in all forms and media, shall be assigned exclusively to the Research Society on Alcoholism.

Articles, editorials, letters to the editor, and other text material in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research represent the opinions of the authors and do not reflect the opinions of the Research Society on Alcoholism, the International Society for Biomedical Research on Alcoholism, the publisher, or the institution with which the author is affiliated, unless the contrary is clearly specified. All papers are subject to peer review by a Review Editor (member of the Board of Review Editors, the Editor, and the Associate Editors) and one or two referees. Authors may suggest up to four, and disqualify two, potential referees.

A cover letter signed by all authors must accompany the manuscript. The letter should state that: a) the submitted manuscript has been read and approved by all signatories, b) all authors acknowledge that they have exercised due care in ensuring the integrity of the work, and c) none of the original material contained in the manuscript has been submitted for consideration nor will any of it be published elsewhere except in abstract form in connection with scientific meetings.

Requirements for authorship are: (1) substantial contribution to conception, design, gathering, analysis and/or interpretation of data and (2) contribution to the writing and intellectual content of the article.

Page Charges

Manuscripts accepted for publication in Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research will be assessed a page charge of $60.00 (U.S.) per printed page to cover, in part, the cost of publication. Editorial consideration of a manuscript is in no way related to the author's ability to assume the page charge, but it is expected that this charge will be paid by the author's research funds that supported the research.

Preparing the Manuscript

Manuscripts should be typed with double spacing and 1" margins. Generally, the length of the text should not exceed 4000 words, or 16 pages.

Organize the manuscript to include all experiments and related materials under the single headings of Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion.

The first page of the manuscript should contain the following information: (1) title of the paper; (2) authors' names; (3) name of institution in which work was done; (4) acknowledgments for research support; (5) institution and location of all authors; (6) name, address, telephone and fax numbers, and e-mail address of the author to whom communications regarding the manuscript should be directed. The article should be briefly summarized or abstracted in a short paragraph (approximately 300 words) at the beginning of the text on a separate page. It should contain 4 elements labeled: Background, Methods, Results, and Conclusions. At the end of the paragraph, provide no more than 5 key words. Provide a running head not to exceed 60 spaces.

Authors who would like assistance with the English language should contact the Associate Editor for their region or the office of the Editor.

Preparing Illustrations and Tables

Illustrations should be attached to online submission in tiff or jpg format. If permission to reproduce any illustration is needed, it is the responsibility of the author to obtain it; written notice of permission should be included with the submission. Position of figures and tables in the text should be marked on the manuscript and cited in order in the text. Arabic numbering should be used for both figures and tables. Legends for illustrations should be printed on a separate sheet and included at the end of the manuscript. A legend must accompany each illustration. Each table should be saved as a separate file and appropriately numbered. The contributor must bear all costs connected with printing color illustrations.

References and Citations

Authors are responsible for the accuracy and completeness of information contained in the references. References must be compiled at the end of the article in alphabetical order. They must be typed and double-spaced under the heading REFERENCES. Abbreviations for titles of medical periodicals should conform to those used in the latest edition of Index Medicus.

If a referenced author has published more than one article in the same year, the articles must be designated alphabetically in the reference list, and identified in the text, by small letters, i.e., a, b, c, etc.

In-text citations must be listed alphabetically by author name(s) and year of publication in parentheses. For example:

One author: (Smith, 1998); one author with more than one referenced publication in the same year: (Jones, 1988b)

Two authors: (Smith and Jones, 1997)

Three or more authors: (Smith et al., 1996) NOTE: et al. is used only for in-text citations, not in the references.

If more than one article is cited in the parentheses, list authors in alphabetical order. For example: (Brown et al., 1999; Lee et al., 1995b; Smith, 2000; Walters and Mason, 1997a). Failure to use the correct forms for citations and references may delay publication of the article.

Rapid Communication

Rapid Communications are intended to present new ideas, new data of special interest and importance, or novel insights into phenomena deemed to have unusual significance to the alcohol research community. The manuscript cannot exceed 18 pages in length, including abstract, text, references, tables, and figures. The manuscript must make a specific point, be clearly of scientific significance, and not require any revision other than editorial correction. A cover letter detailing the importance of the finding must accompany each communication. Preferably, the editor should be contacted before submission.

Reprints

A reprint order form, showing cost of reprints, is sent with page proofs. No free reprints are supplied. Individuals who wish to obtain reprints of an article that appeared in Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research can do so by contacting the author at the address given in the journal. If authors need information on their reprint orders, call 1-800-341-2258 or E-mail: reprints@lww.com.

Proofreading

Contributors are provided with article proofs and are asked to proofread them for typesetting errors. Important changes in data are allowed, but authors will be charged for excessive alterations in the proof. Article proofs should be returned within 48 hours.

Article Highlights

One of the objectives of the journal is the dissemination of the contents of the articles to a broad readership. The Editors appreciate contributors' cooperation in writing lay-language summaries of their articles when requested. These summaries may be featured in the Highlights Section of the journal, may be published separately, or may be used to alert newsmedia to important new alcohol research. Contributors who choose not to have their manuscripts publicized in this manner should so indicate in the cover letter accompanying manuscript submission.
