About the journal

Advanced Composite Materials, a quarterly publication of the Japan Society for Composite Materials, provides an international forum for researchers, manufacturers and designers who are working in the field of composite materials and their structures. Issues contain articles on all aspects of current scientific and technological progress in this interdisciplinary field. The topics of interest are physical, chemical, mechanical and other properties of advanced composites as well as their constituent materials; experimental and theoretical studies relating microscopic to macroscopic behavior; testing and evaluation with emphasis on environmental effects and reliability; novel techniques of fabricating various types of composites and of forming structural components utilizing these materials; design and analysis for specific applications.

Advanced Composite Materials publishes refereed original research papers, review papers, technical papers and short notes as well as some translated papers originally published in the Journal of the Japan Society for Composite Materials. Issues also contain news items such as information on new materials and their processing.

Instructions to Authors

 Submission of manuscripts
Manuscripts and illustrations should be submitted in triplicate to: The Editorial Committee of Advanced Composite Materials, c/o N. Takeda, Dept. Aeronautics and Astronautics, Graduate School of Engineering, c/o Komaba Open Laboratory, 4-6-1 Komaba, Meguro-ku, Tokyo 153-8904, Japan. All contributions will be evaluated by at least two independent referees. Papers should be original or translations of original Japanese-language papers and must not have been submitted simultaneously to any other journal. Authors are solely responsible for factual accuracy of their papers. It is the responsibility of the principal author to secure requisite permission from his or her employer and all papers submitted are understood to have received due clearance(s) for publication.

Manuscript style
Manuscripts must be in English, typed with double line spacing, single-sided on 8.5 x 11' or A4 sheets, and should be numbered consecutively, beginning with the title page. The first page of an article should contain only (1) the title of the paper, the name(s) and addresse(s) of the author(s), (2) a short title (running head) not exceeding 45 characters, (3) the name, full postal address as well as telephone, fax and e-mail number of the author to whom correspondence and proofs should be sent. An abstract of 50--250 words and 4--8 key words should be included with all manuscripts and follow the title page on a separate sheet. When a wordprocessor is used in preparing the manuscript, a hard copy output according to the above style must be submitted.

Headings and subheadings for different sections of the paper (e.g. Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusion) should be clearly indicated. It is recommended not more than 3 hierarchical levels of headings should be used in the main contents of the article. The headings should be numbered to indicate their relative importance, i.e. 1., 1.1., 2., 2.1., 2.1.1., etc. Abstract, Acknowledgement and Reference sections should not be numbered. Detailed mathematical discussions should be placed in an appendix. Units of measurement, abbreviations and symbols should follow the International System of Units (SI). Equations and formulae should be typewritten wherever possible. Equations should be numbered consecutively with arabic numerals in parentheses on the right-hand side of the page. Special symbols and Greek letters should be identified in the margin.

Tables and Figures
Tables should be given short informative titles and should be numbered consecutively in arabic numerals. Tables may be reproduced by photo-offset, i.e. directly from the typed manuscript. Figures in a form suitable for reproduction should be submitted separately from the text as original drawings in India ink, or high contrast, sharp, unmounted photographs on glossy paper. Lettering on figures should be proportional to the size of the figure to ensure legibility after reduction. On the back of each figure should be indicated lightly in soft pencil: (1) the top of the figure with an arrow, (2) the author and the figure number. All chemical structures should be supplied as artwork suitable for direct reproduction. All figures and tables should be cited consecutively in the text and a list of captions should be provided at the end of the paper.

References and reference section
The references should be cited in a sequential manner and the reference numbers should be in square brackets. References should be listed at the end of the paper in the reference section in the numerical order they appear in the text.

References to articles from journals should be given in this order: Reference number; full surname(s) and initial(s) of author(s); full title of article; title of the journal in abbreviated from; volume number; year of publication in parentheses; first and last relevant page numbers.

Example:

Umekawa, S., Yamamoto, J., Yamaguchi, Y. Lee, C.H. and Wakashima K., Zirconia fiber coating for improved fiber/matrix compatibility in tunsten fiber reinforced stainless steel.Trans. JSCM, 11 (1985), 45--52.

References to articles from books should give, in this order: reference number; full surname(s) and initial(s) of author(s); full title of the article; title of the book in italic (volume number if applicable); name(s) of the editor(s); name and location of the publisher; year of publication in parentheses; first and last relevant page numbers.

Example:

2. Otani, S. and Oya, A., Status Report on Pitch-Based Carbon Fiber in Japan, in: Composites '86: Recent Advances in Japan and the United States, Kawata, K. Umekawa, S. and Kobayashi, A. (eds.), Japan Society for Composite Materials, Tokyo, (1986), 1--10.

Personal communications and unpublished documents should not be cited.

Proofs
Proofs will be sent to the designated author to check typesetting accuracy. Alterations to the original manuscript at this stage will result in considerable delay in publication and therefore are not accepted unless charged to the author. Proofs should be returned within 3 days of receipt.

Reprints
Reprints may be ordered at prices shown on the reprint order form which will be sent to the author along with the proofs.

Page charge
There will be no page charges, unless the length of the paper exceeds 16 printed pages.

Review articles, short communications, Letters to the Editor and selected conference/symposium papers should be presented in the same style as a full paper.

Word-processor disks
The publisher's production department can use your word-processor disks. If available, please send a copy of the disk with your final revised manuscript (together with two copies of the printout). This gives a substantial decrease in typesetting time and ensures that there are no re-keying errors in the article. Moreover, using word-processor disks helps us to shorten publication times. If you provide a disk, please follow these instructions:

1. Label the disk with the author's name; the word processor/computer used (e.g., IBM-PC, Macintosh); the name of the program (e.g., WordPerfect, TEX, MS-Word). If you have an editor's manuscript number, include it in the label.; 2. Send the manuscript as three files; if possible keep the text, figure legends, and tables in separate files. File names must clearly indicate the content of each file; 3. Send separate disks if you submit more than one article at the time; 4. A hard copy printout of the manuscript that exactly matches the disk files must be supplied. Special characters and symbols which are not included in the printer used, should be left as blank spaces in the files and these should be correctly written in the printout in red; 5. Do not use footnotes; 6. Do not justify the right-hand margin.
