General
Submissions to Acta Zoologica are now made on-line using Manuscript Central. To submit to the journal go to http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/az. If this is the first time you have used the system you will be asked to register by clicking on 'create an account'. Full instructions on making your submission are provided. You should receive an acknowledgement within a few minutes. Thereafter, the system will keep you informed of the process of your submission through refereeing, any revisions that are required, and a final decision.
Manuscripts should be in English and written in a concise, straightforward style. Authors not fluent in English are advised to have their manuscript checked by a colleague with a good command of the language. The manuscript should present scientific findings which are essentially new and which have not been published or submitted for publication elsewhere. Review papers are also welcomed.
Papers of up to 24 printed pages (including illustrations, tables, references, etc.) are printed without page charge. Authors who wish to submit larger papers are advised to contact the editor in advance. All correspondence will normally be through the Editorial Office.
The manuscript should be typed double-spaced on one side of white A4 paper, with wide margins. All pages should be numbered. Original illustrations should not be sent until the manuscript has been accepted for publication. The form and content should be checked carefully to exclude the need for corrections in proof. Changes in the proof other than typographical errors will be charged to the authors.
Where a paper has joint authors, one author must accept responsibility for all correspondence.

Text
Files should be formatted double-spaced with no hyphenation and automatic word wrap (no hard returns within paragraphs). Please type your text consistently, e.g. take care to distinguish between '1' (one) and l (Lower case L) and '0' (zero) and 'O' (capital O), etc.
Latin names of genera and species should be in italics or underlined to indicate italics. All other indications for the printer will be inserted by the editor.
Literature references in the text should have the following form:
'Hatschek (1877) described...' or 'The statement by Hatschek (1877, p. 506) "Die Furchungselemente ... grösser" has been...' or 'As described earlier (Hatschek 1877; Reed and Cloney 1983a, b; Strathmann et al. 1972, fig. 2)...'
Footnotes should generally be avoided.
Reference to figures and tables in the manuscript should have the following form: 'As shown in Fig. 3 and Table 1...' or 'The cells have many cilia (Fig. 3)'.
Illustrations
Please send us digital versions of your figures if at all possible. Line illustrations or photographs should be supplied after the manuscript has been accepted. Line illustrations should be provided at 600 dots per inch (dpi) and photographs at 300 dots per inch in either TIFF or EPS format. Further information on these formats is available at http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/bauthor/illustration.asp
All illustrations are to be numbered consecutively with arabic numerals, and each one must be referred to in the text. Photographs arranged in groups together should all form part of the same figure. For example, four photographs should be referred to as Fig. 1A, 1B, 1C and 1D rather than figures 1-4. The approximate position of illustrations and tables should be indicated in the margin of the text. All illustrations should be marked with the author's name. The legends should be self-explanatory and must always be included below the illustration and on the same page. Please note that your paper will go through production more quickly if the figures do not have to be relabelled or redrawn. Please ensure that electronic artwork is prepared such that, after reduction to fit across one or two columns or two-thirds width (80mm, 169mm or 110mm, respectively) as required, all lettering will be clear and easy to read, i.e. no labels should be too large or too small. Avoid using tints if possible; if they are essential to the understanding of the figure, try to make them coarse. No artwork should be incorporated into the text files. Original drawings or photographs should be supplied for reproduction.
The illustrations should preferably be submitted as photographic reproductions (not photocopies) at the size intended for printing. This will enable authors both to judge the suitability of the illustrations for printing and keep a standardised lettering, viz. 10 point letters for line drawings and 12-14 point letters for photographs.
Photographs should be provided as glossy prints with good contrast.
The magnifications of the illustrations should be indicated by scale bars.
Full instructions concerning the submission of artwork can be found on the journal's Manuscript Central site: http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/az.
Tables
Tables should be typed as text, using 'tabs' to align columns. The use of table editors should be avoided. Do not use graphics software to create tables.
Full instructions concerning the submission of tables can be found on the journal's Manuscript Central site: http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/az.
File Description Form and Exclusive Licence Form
The submitted manuscript must be accompanied by the completed File Description Form and Exclusive Licence Form. Until these forms are received, the manuscript cannot be put into production.
Colour
Acta Zoologica welcomes colour figures and photographs. All black and white figures are free in both the printed and online versions of an article. All colour figures on the online version and in the PDF offprints are free of charge. Colour figures in the printed version of an article are charged at cost. A Colour Work Agreement form must be completed by authors submitting colour artwork and returned to:

Email: msim@wiley.com
Full details are given on the form. Under exceptional circumstances, authors may request the charges to be waived. This must be done, with justification from the author, at the time of submission of the manuscript. If the author feels that inclusion of the figure(s) in colour is essential for interpretation of the results presented, then the author must provide justification to the Editors in writing at the time of submission. If authors wish to apply for funds to cover the costs of colour printing, the Editors will provide relevant support letters to funding bodies, indicating acceptance of the paper
Proofs
Proofs are now available through the web. The corresponding authors will be sent an email with full instructions from the typesetters. They should be returned to the Production Editor within 3 days of receipt. Where this is not possible authors should email the Production Editor (AZO@oxon.blackwellpublishing.com) to advise of the delay. Proofs can be faxed back to the Production Editor on +65 6511 8288. The return address for proof corrections is as above. Please do not use Adobe Acrobat software options to electronically edit the proof, as doing so may delay the publication of your paper. Major alterations to the text and illustrations are only accepted when absolutely necessary; the additional cost may be charged to the author.
Offprints
A PDF offprint of the online published article will be provided free of charge to the corresponding author, and may be distributed subject to the Publisher's terms and conditions. Paper offprints of the printed published article may be purchased if ordered on the form sent with the proof, and if returned to the Offprints Department at the time that proof corrections are returned. Printed offprints are posted to the correspondence address given for the paper unless a different address is specified on the order form. Note that it is not uncommon for printed offprints to take up to eight weeks to arrive after publication of the journal.
Early View
Acta Zoologica is covered by Blackwell Publishing's Early View service.
Early View articles are complete full-text articles published online in advance of their publication in a printed issue. Articles are therefore available as soon as they are ready, rather than having to wait for the next scheduled print issue. Early View articles are complete and final. They have been fully reviewed, revised and edited for publication, and the authors' final corrections have been incorporated. Because they are in final form, no changes can be made after online publication. The nature of Early View articles means that they do not yet have volume, issue or page numbers, so Early View articles cannot be cited in the traditional way. They are therefore given a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), which allows the article to be cited and tracked before it is allocated to an issue. After print publication, the DOI remains valid and can continue to be used to cite and access the article. More information about DOIs can be found at: www.doi.org/faq.html
If you would like to receive an email alert when your paper has been published on Early View, please follow the instructions on the following document: http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/pdf/email_alert.pdf
World Wide Web Site
Additional material (such as multimedia adjuncts, large data sets, extra colour illustrations, bibliographies, or any other material for which insufficient space in Acta Zoologica is available) may be able to be published via the journal's World Wide Web site.
