Instructions to Authors

***Note to Authors: please make sure your contact address information is clearly visible on the outside of all packages you are sending to Editors.***

Preparing for Submission
Submitted manuscripts should be arranged according to the rules stated in "Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals" Ann Intern Med 1997; 126: 36-47, or JAMA 1997; 277: 927-34. The full document is available at www.icmje.org
When submitting a paper, the author should always make a full statement to the editor about all submissions and previous reports that might be regarded as redundant or duplicate publication of the.

Conflict of interest and funding: Authors are responsible for recognising and disclosing financial and other conflicts of interest that might bias their work. They should acknowledge in the manuscript all financial support for the work and other financial or personal connections to the work.

Statistic validity: If statistical data are provided the authors are requested to submit an official statement issued by a certified statistician (with a proper affiliation) regarding the validity of methods used.

Ethics and consent: When reporting experiments on human subjects, indicate whether the procedures followed were in accordance with the ethical standards of the responsible committee on human experimentation and with the Helsinki Declaration of 1975, as revised in 1983. Do not use patients' names, initials, or hospital numbers, especially in illustrative material. Papers including animal experiments or clinical trials must be accompanied by an approval by the local ethics committee. Please give date of issue and registration number.

Identifying information should not be published in written descriptions, photographs, and pedigrees unless the information is essential for scientific purposes and the patient (or parent or guardian) gives written informed consent for publication. Informed consent for this purpose requires that the patient be shown the manuscript to be published.

Submission

Electronic Manuscripts
The editors encourage submissions on diskette to facilitate rapid accessibility of your work to the readers. The electronic files and the printout must be identical. The diskette should be labelled with your name and the name of the computer platform and version of the word processing system you have used. Please observe that Taylor & Francis can receive files from any word processing system; however, styled Microsoft Word files are preferred.
Please keep illustrations as separate files, e.g. EPS, TIFF or PDF. However, Taylor & Francis can handle various application formats. For details please contact the editorial office.
Halftones and colour photos should be included separately.

Please use these simple guidelines when preparing your electronic manuscript:

  1. Please be consistent. The same elements should be keyed in exactly the same way throughout the manuscript.
  2. Do not break words at the end of lines. Use a hyphen only to hyphenate compound words.
  3. Enter only one space after the full-stop at the end of a sentence.
  4. When emphasising words, please use the italic feature of your word processor software.
  5. Do not justify your text; use a ragged right-hand margin.
  6. Use a double hyphen (--) to indicate a dash in text.
  7. Do not use the lowercase l for 1 (one) or the uppercase O for 0 (zero).
  8. The space bar should only be used as a word separator. Use TAB when indenting paragraphs or separating columns in tables.

Manuscript on paper
Manuscripts should be sent in triplicate to the Editorial Office together with a submission letter to the Editor. The text should be double-spaced, type-written on one side of the paper with wide margins. Manuscripts must be accompanied by a covering letter signed by all co-authors

Title page. A separate title page is necessary and should bear a) the title of the article, b) names of the authors, c) the institutions of origin, d) the corresponding author, his or her address and telefax number.

Abstract. A short abstract not exceeding 150 words must accompany each manuscript informing about problems, methods, results and conclusions. Abbreviations and references are not allowed. Provide 3-5 key words supplementing the information contained in the title. Words from the title or covering concepts already described in the title, should never be repeated among the key words. For guidance, see the Medical Subject Headings of Index Medicus. The abstract must be typed on a separate sheet.
In all papers (except Case reports and Letters), the abstracts should be styled in the following order: The reason that prompted the study, purpose, methods, the most important findings and, as a conclusion, the single most important finding. (No headlines, just new paragraphs for each section.) Below the abstract: Title of journal; The principal author and his or her complete address.

Pages of main text
Margin. Leave a wide left-hand margin (about 4 cm).

Pagination. Ensure that all text pages are correctly numbered in the top right-hand corner, beginning with the title page.

Headings. Use capitals: MATERIAL AND METHODS; RESULTS; DISCUSSION; ACKNOWLEDGEMENT(S); REFERENCES.

Subheadings. Use lower case letter italicized or underlined.

References should be numbered consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text. Identify references in text by arabic numerals in parenthesis as follows: , "as shown by Smith (5)"; ... if two authors: "Smith & Jones. (6)"; ... if more than two authors: "Smith et al. (7)". The style of references must follow the Vancouver system.
Abbreviations of journal titles; please consult the List of Journals Indexed in Index Medicus, published annually as a list in the January issue of Index Medicus, also accessible at www.nlm.nih.gov Observe the interpunctuation most carefully.

1. Reference to periodicals: Maietta G. Ronqioletti F, Rebora A. Seborrheic dermatitis and daylight. Acta Derm Venereol (Stockh) 1991; 71: 538-539.
2. Reference to books: Blumenkrantz N, Asboe Hansen G. Methods for analysis of connective tissue macromolecules by determination of certain constitutents. In: Glick D, ed. Methods of biochemical analysis. New York: John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 1977: 40-44.

For journal article in electronic format use the following style: Morse SS. Factors in the emergence of infectious diseases. Emerg Infect Dis [serial online] 1995 Jan-Mar [cited 1996 Jun 5]; 1(1): [24 screens]. Available from: URL: http://www.cdc.gov\ncidod\EID\eid.htm

Tables and figures Authors should exercise particular care in the preparation, notation and description of figures and tables. Oversized original illustrations should be photographed and a print on glossy paper submitted. For the printing of tables and figures the whole type area can be used or it can be divided into two or three columns. Remember that illustrations will usually be reduced. Line drawing and lettering should therefore be large enough to sustain photoreduction. Use India ink or, preferably, instant lettering. For colour photographs to be considered for publication, send original transparencies mounted on card and two sets of unmounted glossy prints. Special arrangements for colour illustrations must be made with the Editor for payment of colour fee.
Submit unmounted prints rather than original illustrations. Mark the back of each figure with number and the first author's name. Mark when necessary the top of the figure.
Table legends. Each table must be numbered (roman numerals) and have a descriptive title, typed above the table to which it refers. List footnotes below the table, using a, b, c for referencing. Asterisks are used for probability values. Place other explanatory text above the table.
Figure captions. A suitable legend must be provided for each figure. List all captions for illustrations on one page.

Page Proofs
Page proofs are sent direct from the printing office to the corresponding author. It is his or her full responsibility to read and check the proofs against the manuscript. The master proof should be signed and returned to the Editorial Office together with the manuscript within seven days by air mail.

Offprints of article
Forms for ordering offprints are provided with the page proofs. The orders should be sent with the master proof to the Editorial Office.
