Overview

Aims and Scope

Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology (JASIST)

The Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology (JASIST) is a leading international forum for peer-reviewed research in information science. For more than half a century, JASIST has provided intellectual leadership by publishing original research that focuses on the production, discovery, recording, storage, representation, retrieval, presentation, manipulation, dissemination, use, and evaluation of information and on the tools and techniques associated with these processes.

The Journal welcomes rigorous work of an empirical, experimental, ethnographic, conceptual, historical, socio-technical, policy-analytic, or critical-theoretical nature. JASIST also commissions in-depth review articles (“Advances in Information Science”) and reviews of print and other media.

"Advances in Information Science" (AIS)

Statement of purpose: "Advances in Information Science” (AIS) is a series of in-depth review articles published in the pages of the Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology (JASIST), continuing a tradition established by the Annual Review of Information Science and Technology (ARIST).

Aims: AIS articles are scholarly reviews of clearly defined topics, substantiated by reference to the published literature. The aim is to furnish the reader with a complete picture of the state-of-the-art for each focal area. Review articles published in the AIS series meet the highest standards of comprehensiveness of coverage, clarity of exposition and structure, and significance of reported work. The title “Advances in Information Science” has been chosen in order to distinguish the review articles in this series from others that are merely historical reviews of the literature: the expectation is that accepted papers will push the boundaries of knowledge in emerging areas of interest. In their submissions, authors are encouraged to develop frameworks, models, and recommendations that will serve not only to orient readers new to the field under consideration, but also to point to ways in which future work may be organized and prioritized.

Scope: The original research reported in AIS’s parent journal focuses on the production, discovery, recording, storage, representation, retrieval, presentation, manipulation, dissemination, use, and evaluation of information. Similarly, the review articles published in the AIS series provide authoritative and accessible overviews of recent and ongoing work that significantly improves our understanding of these processes, and of the tools and techniques associated with them. Some of the broad areas of inquiry that lie within the scope of AIS are: knowledge production; knowledge organization; information systems design and evaluation; information access and use; and information policy. In practice, the range of topics covered in the AIS series will reflect the diversity and dynamism of the broad field of information science and technology.

Selection and review: Invitations to submit manuscripts to AIS are extended to scholars on the basis of their demonstrable authority on topics that are of current and growing interest. Manuscripts are reviewed by peers who will be asked to suggest ways in which the papers may be improved, rather than to make accept/reject decisions.

Contact: If you are interested in contributing to AIS, please contact the Associate Editor, Jonathan Furner, at furner@gseis.ucla.edu.

Instructions to Authors

Author Guidelines

Prospective authors should submit manuscripts through the online submission system at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jasist.

Types of manuscripts: Various contributions are considered for publication: full-length research articles (6,000-8,000 words), commissioned review articles (8,000-10,000 words, see ‘Advances in Information Science’ under ‘Overview: Aims & Scope’), occasional opinion papers (2,000-3000 words), brief communications (1,000-2,000 words), and letters to the editor.

Only articles that have not been published previously, that have not been submitted elsewhere, and that are not under review for another publication in any medium or forum should be submitted to JASIST. We do, however, encourage the submission of proceedings papers that have been expanded significantly. However, if any portion of the submission has appeared elsewhere, or in another language, the author must clearly indicate this in the text. The editors will assume that submission of an article to this journal implies that all the foregoing conditions are applicable. It is the author's responsibility to obtain written permission to reproduce material that has appeared in another publication.

All materials submitted will be acknowledged on receipt and (except for letters) subject to (single-blind) peer review. Opinion papers may be sent for review at the discretion of the Editor-in-Chief. Copies of the referees' comments will be forwarded to the submitting (or corresponding) author, along with the Editor-in-Chief’s decision.

Books, monographs, reports, and other items for review may be sent to the Associate Editor, Book Reviews: Cassidy R. Sugimoto, School of Informatics and Computing, Indiana University Bloomington, 1320 East 10th Street, Bloomington, IN 47405-3907. Tel: (812) 856-2323; sugimoto@indiana.edu.

Format and file types: We ask that you submit a single MS Word document with all the text, captions and figures in a single file. The figures and tables should be placed in the manuscript after the paragraph in which they are first mentioned.

Please also submit separate files for the following:
  • Main document: A second Main Document should be text only (no figures, schemes or tables). Formats other than .rtf or .doc format will not be up-loadable for text, tables or captions. In the appropriate place in your text, please type “Insert Table (or Figure) # here.”
  • Captions: Captions should be text only (no figures, schemes or tables). They should all be included in a single MS Word document.
  • Tables: Tables should be created using the Table tool in MS Word. Tables can all be included in a single MS Word file.
  • Figures: Figures should be submitted separately, one figure per file, as figure # (i.e., figure 1, figure 2, etc.), and should be in .jpg, .tif, .gif, or .pict format.
Please also note that authors submitting in LaTex should not supply the references in a separate file but should include them in the same manuscript file with the text.

Language: Manuscripts submitted to JASIST must be in English, cleanly and clearly written; if not, they will be rejected. Authors for whom English is a second language may choose to have their manuscript professionally edited before submission. Authors wishing to use a professional English-language editing service should make contact and arrange payment with the editing service of their choice. For more details regarding the recommended services, please refer to http://authorservices.wiley.com/bauthor/english_language.asp.

Organization: The first page of the manuscript must bear the title of the paper and the full names of the authors, as well as their affiliations, full addresses, telephones and fax numbers, and e-mail addresses. In the case of multiple authors, please indicate which author is to receive correspondence and proofs.
  • An informative abstract of 200 words or less is required for all articles, including brief communications.
  • Section headings should be indicated in boldface type and subheadings in italics. Do not number section or subsection headings.
  • Financial support may be acknowledged in the Acknowledgment section at the end of the article.
  • Authors should not submit their article with Line Numbering enabled. Do not number sections in your article.
  • Do not use Word’s footnote feature. Instead, please insert footnotes in regular text at the end of the articles instead. If your paper contains fifteen (15) or more footnotes, they should be formatted as Endnotes in a separate section immediately preceding the References.
  • Do not include hyperlink citations in your submitted article and do not number your reference list.

Style and references: In general, the style should follow the forms given in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (http://www.apastyle.org/manual). Non-adherence to the journal style, including the points described below and in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th ed., 2010), may lead to delays in review and publication.

The accuracy and completeness of the references is the responsibility of the author. Failure to submit accurate and properly formatted references may delay review and publication. References to personal letters, papers presented at meetings, and other unpublished material may be included. If such material may be of help in the evaluation of the paper, copies should be made available to the editor. Papers which are part of a series should include a citation to the previous paper. Explanatory material may be appended to the end of a citation to avoid footnotes in text. Wiley's journal styles now include EndNote, a software product that may help simplify and streamline the research process.

Author Services: AFWALS Author Services enables authors to track their accepted article through the production process to publication online and in print. Authors can check the status of their articles online and choose to receive automated emails at key stages of production. The author will receive an email with a unique link that enables them to register and have their article automatically added to the system. Please ensure that a complete email address is provided when submitting the manuscript.
Visit http://authorservices.wiley.com for more details on online production tracking and for a wealth of resources including FAQs and tips on article preparation, submission and more.
