The Brazilian Journal of Geology is a quarterly, peer-reviewed journal, with open access printed or online versions, which provides an international means for the publication of scientific works related to all the aspects of Geological Sciences in Brazil, South America and South Atlantic countries, including Antarctica. The journal has publications on mineralogy, petrology, geochemistry, paleontology, sedimentology, stratigraphy, structural geology, tectonics, neotectonics, geophysics applied to geology, volcanology, metallogeny and mineral deposits, marine geology, glaciology, paleoclimatology, geochronology, stratigraphy, engineering geology, hydrogeology , geohazards and geological remote sensing, providing a niche for interdisciplinary works on regional geology and Earth history.
The manuscripts submitted, which will be evaluated as for their content and originality, must have regional appeal and present material of greater than local significance. Articles previously published or being submitted to other publications will not be considered.
GUIDELINES FOR MANUSCRIPT PREPARATION
The manuscripts must be digitalized in Microsoft Word format (.doc) and submitted online. The works must be written in English, although submissions in Portuguese and Spanish may also be accepted. The manuscripts may be submitted to the following categories: original articles, rapid communications, accelerated review articles and letters to the editor. Specific editorials and review articles may be ordered by the editors.
ORIGINAL ARTICLES
The manuscripts related to the complete original articles must not exceed 8,000 words, including title, authors, institutions and addresses, abstract and keywords, resumo and palavras-chave, text, references and captions. Illustrations and tables should be sent in separated files, and no file shall exceed10 Mb in size. They should follow, as far as possible, the following formatting:
Title page: it shall include the complete title (up to 250 characters), short title (up to 40 characters), complete address of the corresponding author and names of the remaining authors, with affiliation.
Resumo e Abstract: are limited to 250 words. Citations and abbreviations are not allowed. For keywordsand palavras-chave, 3-6 items must be used, without repeating words from the title.
Main text: it must have, preferably, an introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion, conclusions and acknowledgments.
a) The introduction must explain the problem which was investigated and indicate the objectives of the work. Previous relevant publications may be mentioned, or the art may be presented to the field of study and considerations regarding the original data obtained.
b) In the section “Materials and methods”, the information must be brief, clear and sufficient. Standard methods need only to be referenced and techniques already published may be briefly described, according to their respective references.
c) The results must bring the objective and direct report of the observations made and the data produced, along with some personal insight. Tables and illustrations are welcome. The text should not repeat what is evident in figures and tables, though it should comment the meaning of these data.
d) In the section “Discussions and Conclusions” the interpretation of the reported data and the relevance of these new information face the existent knowledge must be included.
e) The acknowledgements must be in a separated paragraph , placed before the references and it should contain only the strictly necessary.
Illustrations: the digital version of BJG encourages the submission of colorful figures, while the printed version will publish illustrations in Black and White and shades of gray. No leaflets will be accepted. The illustrations should contain clear and readable information and include explanations on the symbols used. Graphics, photographs, photomicrographies and planks will be considered as figures and numbered sequentially, in order or citation in the text.
Tables: must be concise, self-explanatory, with opened sides and numbered sequentially.
References: citation in the text must contain the author(s) and the year of publication, with specific pages when appropriate. In the end of the article the works must be listed in their complete form, with all authors, alphabetically according to the last name of the first author.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Letters to the Editor are submitted in order to comment a relevant aspect of Geological Sciences, or to express different opinions regarding an article recently published by the journal. In this last case, they will Consist of only one document, without title, and it may include some references. They will not be submitted to peer review and will be published at editors’ will, who may request a response by the author(s) to the commented article.
EDITORIALS
Editorials must cover broad aspects of Geological Sciences. They will be issued by the editors of BJG, by people connected to the Brazilian Society of Geology and by personalities of the sector. These documents will not be submitted to peer review and will be published at editors’ will.
REVIEW ARTICLES
Review articles must cover relevant Geology themes. These articles are requested by editors, but review articles spontaneously submitted are welcome. In this case, potential authors must take into account that they shall be recognized as fully competent in the review work field.
ORGANIZING SUBMISSIONS
a) Format of the text: Edit the text using Microsoft Word, double space, A4.
b) Elements of the text: The hierarchy of titles and subtitles should obey the following pattern: headers of main sections with UPPERCASE letters, in bold. Lower hierarchy sections must be in Uppercase and lowercase letters, in bold. Subsections must be in italic, with UPPERCASE letters. Lower subdivisions in italic, with the first letter of the first Word in Uppercase and the other ones in lowercase letters. The places for insertion of figures and tables must be indicated in the text, in a positions as close as possible to their first citation, followed by their respective captions. In the text, the words “Figure” and “Table” may be written down, or abbreviated between parentheses (Fig. 1, Tab. 1). Abbreviations must be avoided or used sparingly. If used, they must be defined in the first time they are mentioned and should not be used in the title, resumo and abstract.
c) Format of the Resumo and the Abstract: in a single paragraph, Double space and must be followed bypalavras-chave and keywords.
d) Illustrations: Signs and symbols must have adequate dimensions in order to allow readability. Graphic scales, if necessary, must be placed inside the illustration area. Blooming photographs must present scale and orientation bars. Figures must be sent as files in the formats .tiff or .jpg of high resolution (minimum 600 dpi), and they may be compressed into LZW in case of the .tiff format.
e) Tables: Must be typed in documents of Microsoft Word (.doc), compatible with A4 format.
f) Formulas and Equations: Number the formulas and equations to the right, with Arabic numbers between parentheses and, in the text, refer to them as “equation (1)”, etc.
g) Acknowledgements: Subtitle in bold and italic.
h) References: Subtitle in bold and lowercase letters. Here are examples of formats which must be used for the most frequent types of references.
