MANUSCRIPT GUIDELINES

Authors charges
According to the Editorial Policy of the Journal, publication is free for the first 6 paged-up pages for original articles (corresponding to about 16 double spaced typewritten pages including figures and tables) and 8 pages for reviews (corresponding to 20 double spaced typewritten pages). For each additional page Authors will be charged Euro 95,00.= directly by the Publisher. Extrapage charges do not apply to invited articles.
Full color graphics and figures will be published online free of charge.

Authors should follow the guidelines from the «Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals». Use only standard abbreviations. The full term for which an abbreviation stands for, should precede its first use in the text. Please do not use desktop publishing software such as PageMaker or Xpress. Do not submit files containing hidden text and kindly avoid any complex formatting, since the publisher will modify the style of your manuscript according to the journal’s specifications.

Type manuscript using double-line spacing on A4 paper in English using Arial font size 12 with margins of 2.5 cm (1 inch). Number pages consecutively beginning with the title page on the top right hand corner of each page.

Begin each of the following sections on a separate page: Title page, Keywords, Text, Introduction, Materials and methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements, References, Legends.

Manuscript file

The title page should contain:

1) the title of the article, not longer than 135 characters; avoid abbreviations.
2) a short running head of no more than 75 characters (count letters and spaces); avoid abbreviations
3) first name, middle initial, and last name of each Author;
4) Institutional affiliation for each Author, using superscripts and not symbols (e.g. Paul Smith1)
5) Name, complete mailing address, telephone number, fax number and e-mail address of Author to whom correspondence and request of reprints should be sent
6) Disclaimers

Informed Consent. Manuscripts reporting the results of experimental investigation on human subjects must include a statement to the effect that informed consent was obtained. If the study being reported involved human subjects, human derived materials, or human medical records, please include one of the following statements in the Materials/ Patients and Methods section:

* Institutional Review Board (IRB)/Ethics Committee approval was obtained.
* IRB/Ethics Committee decided approval was not required for this study.

Conflict of interest. All manuscripts must state, in a footnote, whether any Authors have proprietary interest or not. Authors who do not wish to disclose conflicts of interest may still be considered for publication, but their position will be indicated in the publication.

Abstract: The abstract should be structured in Purpose, Methods, Results and Conclusions and be no longer than 250 words. As the refereeing process requires blind abstracts, please submit a separate file together with your manuscript, labeled «blind_abstract», containing only the manuscript’s title and abstract, without authors’ names and details.

Keywords: Provide 3 to 6 keywords. Use terms from the Medical Subject Headings list from lndex Medicus whenever possible.

Acknowledgements: Acknowledge statistical consultation and assistance (when provided by a person different from the Author) in an acknowledgement at the end of the article before the references. Indicate the name, degree and affiliation of the individual.. Authors are responsible for obtaining written permission from everyone acknowledged by name.

References

Number references consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text. Identify references by Arabic numerals (in parentheses) in the text; References used within tables should appear as footnotes in the table legend. The journals’ titles should be abbreviated according to Index Medicus/Medline. All references must be verified by the Authors(s) against the original documents. You may use the reference checking tool available atwww.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query/static/citmatch.html

Cite only published studies as references. Any references (including books or articles) that have been accepted for publication, but not yet published, should have the term "in press" in the reference in place of volume and page numbers. These must be updated prior to publication, if possible. You may also acknowledge "unpublished data" or "submitted" articles within parentheses in the text. For abstracts, oral or poster presentations follow the same rules as for unpublished materials.

Examples of correct forms of references are given below:

Journal Article
Standard journal article
(List all Authors when six or less: when seven or more list only first three and add et al):
Gundersen K, Bradley RF, Marble A. Serum phosphorus and potassium levels after intravenous administration of glucose. N Engl J Med 1954; 250: 547-54.

Book
Wilmore DW, Carpentier YA eds. Metabolic support of the critically ill patient. Berlin Heidelberg: Springer-Verlag 1993; 157-71.

Chapter in a Book
Knochel JP, Jacobson HR. Renal handling of phosphorus clinical hypophosphatemia and phosphorus deficiency. In: Brenner BM, Rector FC, eds. The Kidney. Philadelphia: WB Saunders, 1985; 619-62.

Tables

Each table should have a brief title that is fully understandable without reference to the text and should not offer duplicate information offered in the text. Type each table on a separate sheet; using double spacing. Tables should be created in a Word document using the table tools. Do not format tables as columns or tabs and do not submit tables as figures. Tables should be numbered consecutively in Roman numerals by order of citation in the text. Each table must include title, appropriate column heads and explanatory legends, including definitions of any abbreviation used. References used within tables should appear as footnotes in the table legend.

Legends

Type legends double spaced, starting on a separate page with Arabic numerals corresponding to the illustrations they refer to. When symbols, arrows, numbers, or letters are used to identify parts of the illustrations, identify and explain each one clearly in the legend.

Figures

For good quality reproduction the Figures must be prepared using applications capable of generating high-resolution TIFF or JPG files (1200 DPI for line drawings and 300 DPI for colour and half-tone images for an average base of cm 12). All tables and figures must be mentioned in the text and numbered in order of appearance. No text should be included as part of the graphic.

Arial font should be used for any lettering or text on a figure. If possible use the same font type and size in all artworks (we recommend Arial 12). If a figure has been published elsewhere, acknowledge the original source and submit written permission from the copyright holder to reproduce the material. Permission is required, regardless of authorship or publisher, except for documents in the public domain. Do not embed figures in a Word file and to not submit Powerpoint (PPT) figures. Always submit each figure as a separate file.

Colour illustrations, graphs and figures

Save your artwork setting it to CMYK in a TIFF or JPG format with a resolution of at least 300 ppi. Artwork for publication should be submitted as EPS or TIFF file formats, which will ensure the best printing results. Any figure containing text should be saved only as TIFF file.

Black and white illustrations, graphs and figures

Convert your original artwork it by setting the colour mode as greyscale and saving it as TIFF file with a resolution of at least 1200 ppi if text is included. If not text is included, set the resolution at a minimum of 600 ppi.

For additional information and guidance on how to create good quality artwork, refer to the online tutorial.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Prepare your manuscript as indicated in the detailed instructions under Manuscript Guidelines. Make sure your figures are also available as high resolution jpg or tif files,  as in case of acceptance you will be required to submit new files suitable for publication.

Create ONE Word (.doc or .docx) file which includes the complete title page, manuscript text with figures and tables placed where they should be published, references and acknowledgements. Label it with the surname of the corresponding author. This file will be used during the revision process and it must not be larger than 5 Mb.

DO NOT SUBMIT SEPARATE FIGURES AND TABLES WITH YOUR SUBMISSION FILE!

Submit it only by email to jabfm_submissions@wichtig.it The submission email must include article title, authors list, name and email address of the corresponding Author, name and email address of the first Author.

Your submission must also be accompanied by a signed Copyright Transfer Statement or it will not be considered.

REVIEW PROCESS

Manuscripts are assigned a unique number and all correspondence and enquiries regarding the manuscript must always report this ID number.

Usually two and sometimes more reviewers will review a manuscript. The Journal does not reveal the identity of its reviewers and when the reviewing process will be completed, the corresponding author will be notified by e-mail of all comments and final decision.

AFTER ACCEPTANCE

The Editor in Chief accepts the manuscript with the understanding that the authors cooperate in a timely manner with the production process, including any response to future correspondence from the Journal of Applied Biomaterials & Functional Materials or its readers.

If accepted, your manuscript will be assigned a unique acceptance number, which must accompany all enquiry on the production process, and a DOI (Digital Object Identifier). You will be required to submit your final accepted files online through the Production tracking system for JAB-FM as follows:

1) Manuscript file, which must include a title page with title, short title, authors (listed as first name, initials and surname), author’s affiliations, corresponding author's full information, authors' statements and disclosures on financial support, conflict of interest and on experimental investigation on human subjects, structured abstract (Introduction, Methods, Results and Conclusions),  keywords, manuscript text, acknowledgements, references, tables and figure legends. Mark references in the text in brackets (1) and not in superscripts.

2) Figures submitted as high resolution files only as .JPG or .TIF (not as .DOC or .PPT) Each figure must be submitted separately. Recommended resolution is at least 300 dpi to a base of 10 cm. Please note that the maximum size of each file cannot exceed 10 Mb.

3) Copyright Transfer. With the acceptance of a manuscript for publication, the copyright holder acquires full and exclusive copyright for all languages and countries. You will be required to download, complete and sign a Copyright Transfer form and upload it together with your final accepted files. The signed Copyright Transfer Statement confirms that each part of the paper submitted, including text, tables, illustrations and legends has been submitted only to the Journal of Applied Biomaterials & Functional Materials.

Your submission will be edited to conform with Editorial Board policy in accordance with the "Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals ".

PAGE PROOFS

The Corresponding author will receive an email of notification, complete with detailed instructions, that proofs are ready for approval. Proofs must be reviewed carefully by more than one person and returned within 48 hours  only through Editorial Manager Production Tracking system for JAB-FM to avoid any delay. It is the corresponding author’s responsibility to ensure that there are no errors in the proofs. Changes that have been made to conform to journal style will stand if they do not alter the authors' meaning. Only the most critical changes to the accuracy of the content will be made. Changes that are stylistic or are a reworking of previously accepted material will be disallowed. The publisher reserves the right to deny any changes that do not affect the accuracy of the content and Authors may be charged for alterations to the proofs beyond those required to correct errors or to answer queries. AUTHORSHIP CHANGES including adding or removing Authors CAN NOT BE SUBMITTED WITH PROOF CHANGES. The publisher is not authorized to make such changes and it will delay the publication of your manuscript

EARLY ONLINE RELEASE

Manuscripts are available online in the section "Article In Press" of the Journal after the proofs have been approved by the author. The only difference with the final published version is that the page numbers have not yet been assigned and when an article is assigned to an issue it will be removed from the section.

This early online release is not a draft version since it is produced after all editorial and author corrections are made but no routine editing will occur once the article is online. The publication online in the section “Articles in Press” is not meant to be a last editing opportunity for authors: however, if a major, critical error is found we may be able to make corrections. It is the corresponding author's responsibility that all editing be done when returning the corrected proofs to the Publisher.
