Special Sections may occasionally be considered for publication in JGR-Earth Surface. The Editors will look favorably on such proposals in cases where the theme both complies with the remit of the journal and fulfills one or more of the following criteria:
- Proposals that integrate traditionally separate disciplines or approaches to shed a new light on a theme, particularly where that theme is not well-served by traditional journal boundaries.
- Proposals that develop or address a new and significant theme that has the potential to transform our view of the Earth surface system.
- Proposals that demonstrate a clear holistic benefit: the collection of papers presented within the Special Section must have greater value than those papers published separately.
Proposals should not normally be restricted to papers that have been submitted to, or presented at, a specific conference, session, or workshop, nor to those associated with a particular research project or initiative.
Each paper in a Special Section will be evaluated, reviewed, and edited according to normal JGR-Earth Surface procedures and standards of quality, which includes the involvement of a journal Associate Editor in the review process.
