Instructions to Authors
Scandinavian Journal of Urology is a peer-reviewed international journal. It is the official journal of the Scandinavian Association of Urology. The journal publishes original articles, reviews, letters to the Editor, editorial comments and case reports. As basic research work is of increasing importance to the field of urology this kind are also accepted if clinically related.
All submission must be written concisely in English. Submitted manuscripts should be arranged according to the rules stated in "Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals" in JAMA 1997; 277: 927-34. The full document is available at www.icmje.org
When submitting a paper, the author should always make a full statement to the editor about all submissions and previous reports that might be regarded as redundant or duplicate publication of the same or very similar work.
Because we aim to improve SJU papers’ reporting and increase reviewers’ understanding we ask our research authors to follow such reporting guidelines and to complete the appropriate reporting checklist before submission (or before external peer review if not done earlier). We do not, however, use reporting guidelines as critical appraisal tools to evaluate study quality or filter out articles. • If you are submitting a report of a randomized controlled trial please send with your manuscript a completed checklist and flowchart in accordance with the appropriate CONSORT guidelines, the trial protocol, and the registration details of the trial. • If you are submitting a report of: • a systematic review or meta-analysis of randomized trials and other evaluation studies please follow the PRISMA guidelines (these have superceded the QUOROM guidelines) and submit as a supplemental file the study protocol, if there is one • a meta-analysis of observational studies please follow the MOOSE guidelines and submit as a supplemental file the study protocol, if there is one • a study of diagnostic accuracy please follow the STARD guidelines • an observational study please follow the STROBE guidelines and submit as a supplemental file the study protocol, if there is one • a clinical guidelines paper we would encourage you to follow the GRADE guidance for grading evidence, but will not insist on this
These and other reporting guidelines are collected together in one place: the website of the EQUATOR Network. This network seeks to improve the quality of scientific publications by promoting transparent and accurate reporting of health research.
In the SJU, surgical complications should be reported according to the Clavien-Dindo classification. This classification is published in: • Clavien PA, et al. The Clavien-Dindo classification of surgical complications: five-year experience. Ann Surg 2009;250:187-96.
Conflict of interest and funding: Authors are responsible for recognizing and disclosing financial and other conflicts of interest that might bias their work. They should acknowledge in the manuscript all financial support for the work and other financial or personal connections to the work.
Statistic validity: If complex statistical data are provided, the authors should (upon request from the Editors) be prepared to submit an official statement issued by a certified statistician (with a proper affiliation) regarding the validity of methods used.
Ethics and consent: When reporting experiments on human subjects, indicate whether the procedures followed were in accordance with the ethical standards of the responsible committee on human experimentation and with the Helsinki Declaration of 1975, as revised in 1983. Do not use patients' names, initials, or hospital numbers, especially in illustrative material. Papers including animal experiments or clinical trials must be accompanied by an approval by the local ethics committee. Please give date of issue and registration number.
Identifying information should not be published in written descriptions, photographs, and pedigrees unless the information is essential for scientific purposes and the patient (or parent or guardian) gives written informed consent for publication. Informed consent for this purpose requires that the patient be shown the manuscript to be published.
Submission:Manuscripts should be submitted online at our ScholarOne Manuscripts site http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/sjun. New users should start by creating an account and then follow the instructions provided. Manuscripts are submitted through the Author Centre.
Please use these simple guidelines when preparing your electronic manuscript: 1. Be consistent. The same elements should be keyed in exactly the same way throughout the manuscript. 2. Do not break words at the end of lines. Use a hyphen only to hyphenate compound words. 3. Enter only one space after the full-stop at the end of a sentence. 4. When emphasizing words, please use the italic feature of your word processor software. 5. Do not justify your text; use a ragged right-hand margin. 6. Use a double hyphen (--) to indicate a dash in text. 7. Do not use the lowercase letter l for the number 1 (one) or the uppercase O for 0 (zero). 8. The space bar should only be used as a word separator. Use TAB when indenting paragraphs or separating columns in tables.
Categories of manuscripts
Original Articles: Manuscripts should be written in English and typed double-spaced including references, tables and figure legends, and leave generous margins.
Title page: The title page should carry: title of the article; name of each author and institutional affiliation; name and address of the corresponding author; a short running head of no more than 40 characters.
Abstract and Key words: The abstract to original articles should be structured with the following subheadings; Objective, Material and Methods, Results and Conclusions. It should not exceed 250 words. Below the abstract authors should provide 3-10 key words.
Manuscript layout: The pages should be consecutively numbered. Use the following subheadings; Abstract, Introduction, Material and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements, References and Legends to figures. Preferably the text part of the manuscript should not exceed 3000 words and maximum 30 references.
Case reports: The Journal accepts a few case reports of general interest and significant educational value.
Title page: as for original articles
Manuscript layout: The pages should be consecutively numbered. Use the following subheadings; Introduction, Case Report, Discussion, Acknowledgements, References and Legends to figures. Preferably the text part of the manuscript should not exceed 750 words and 5 references. Case Reports should not have an abstract.
Review articles: Review articles are usually invited by the Editor in Chief. However, review articles are submittable, and good papers will be evaluated by the Editorial Board. The structure of a review article should follow the outlines for original articles. Preferably the text part of the manuscript should not exceed 3500 words and 50 references.
Letters to the Editor: Letters to the Editor should stimulate debate and disseminate important clinical observations. This category can also include case reports with high educational value. A letter should be written in a concise style (no Abstract) with no redundant information and a maximum of 15 references.
Editorial comments: These are commentaries on current topics or on articles published elsewhere in the issue. Word count limit is 1500 and 10 references are allowed. All editorial comments are solicited by the editors and should not be submitted without prior written approval.
References: The Vancouver system must be applied. Number the references consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text. Identify references in the text by Arabic numerals (in parentheses). If more than six authors, site the first six followed by ‘et al’. Papers accepted but not yet published should be designated as ‘(in press)’. References cited only in tables or in legends to figures should be numbered in accordance with the sequence established by the first identification in the text of the particular table or figure. For guidelines please consult http://www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/uniform_requirements.html.

For abbreviations of journal titles, please consult the List of Journals Indexed in Index Medicus available at http://www.nlm.nih.gov/tsd/serials/lji.html.
Tables: Type each table double-spaced on a separate sheet. Tables should be uploaded as separate files in Word or Excel format.Number the tables consecutively (Roman numerals) as they appear in the text and supply a brief title for each. Place explanatory matter in footnotes. Identify statistical measures of variations (i.e SD,SEM, median, range). Indicate in the manuscript the approximate position for each table.
Illustrations: Graphic elements and illustrations are accepted if they provide unique data that cannot be described in the text. Illustrations should be clearly labeled with Arabic numerals in the order they appear in the text. To ensure correct placement in the journal layout, note the figure reference (abbreviated) within brackets when referring to the figure in text, e.g. (Fig. 1). Figure files should be kept as separate files, in TIF, EPS, PDF or JPG format. Providing these formats will guarantee that the quality of the graphics is good throughout the publishing process, if provided with sufficient resolution.
Photographic illustrations should be rendered with a resolution of at least 300 DPI; please use CMYK color conversion if possible. The images should measure at least one column width (80 mm) across, to fit into the journal layout.
Graphs made with Office software such as Microsoft Excel, can be provided in their original format to facilitate conversion into printable format with preserved quality. Any other line graphs/illustrations should preferably be provided in EPS format with a resolution of at least 600 DPI to prevent ragged lines when printed.
The charge for printing colour figures are USD 2300 per article. Colour illustrations printed in black and white in the hard copy will be published in colour free of charge in the online version of the journal.
The maximum file size allowed for upload is 50 MB in total per manuscript. If you need to upload heavier files than that, please contact the Editorial Office. Please try to reduce the file size as much as possible without compromising the quality. More recommendations for digital artwork can be found here: http://art.cadmus.com/da/index.jsp.
