Materials Research Express (MRX) is a multidisciplinary journal devoted to publishing new experimental and theoretical research on the design, fabrication, properties and applications of all engineering materials. Characterized by article length flexibility and a fast-track peer-review process, areas of particular interest include:
- Nanomaterials and nanostructures
- Organic materials
- Glasses and amorphous materials
- Polymers
- Biological and biomedical materials
- Energy and environment materials
- Carbon materials
- Smart materials
- Metamaterials
- Semiconductors
- Superconductors
- Magnetic materials
- Photonic materials
- Electronic materials
- Metals and alloys
- Thin films
As a service to authors, the Editorial Board is committed to personally directing a streamlined peer-review procedure that guarantees both a rapid and fair editorial decision making process. Every effort will be taken to reach an editorial decision within two weeks of submission.
Article acceptance criteria
To be published in MRX an article must be scientifically rigorous and should report new, previously unpublished research that will be of archival value to specialists in an immediate field of materials science (and possibly beyond). The journal's International Advisory Board of experts is responsible for managing the peer-review process to ensure that all published articles meet these criteria.
The peer-review process
As a service to authors, the International Advisory Boardis committed to personally directing a streamlined peer-review procedure that guarantees both a rapid and fair editorial decision making process. Every effort is taken by members of the International Advisory Boardto reach an editorial decision within one week of receiving a manuscript for consideration. All submissions to MRX are preliminarily assessed for editorial suitability by an in-house editorial team ahead of formal consideration by the International Advisory Board. Articles that are considered inappropriate for the journal at this initial stage will be rejected without further review. In such cases the decision will be taken very quickly so that an author has the option to resubmit to another journal without undue delay.
Manuscripts judged to be technically sound will be sent to an expert member of the International Advisory Board for formal review. At this stage the board member may choose either to assess the article themselves, or seek further advice from a second specialist referee in the field. After consideration, the board member will make one of the following decisions:
- Accept, with or without editorial revisions
- Invite the authors to revise their manuscript to address specific concerns before a final decision is reached
- Reject, but indicate to the authors that further work might justify a resubmission
- Reject outright
Article transfers from other IOP journals
Articles that have been judged, following peer-review, to be editorially unsuitable for publication in another IOP journal may, at the discretion of the journal team or International Advisory Board, be deemed appropriate for further consideration by MRX (subject to compliance with editorial scope and the above article acceptance criteria).
In such cases authors will be contacted with the option to transfer a manuscript from their original journal of choice to MRX. Where relevant all previous referee reports and correspondence will also be transferred in the interest of expediting the transfer and decision making process.
Peer Review
This journal operates a single-blind peer review policy. All submissions are preliminarily assessed for editorial suitability by an in-house editorial team ahead of formal peer review. Articles that are considered inappropriate for the journal at this initial stage will be rejected without further review. A new referee reward programme has been introduced which offers referees a 10% credit towards the cost of publishing on a gold open access basis when they review an article. Find out more.

This journal is a member of the Committee for Publication Ethics (COPE). Please read our Ethical Policy for more information.
